In Los Angeles, Fawn is the music and entertainment industry's coach known as the one who "gets the job done." Clients have included Grammy and Oscar winners as well as vocalists and actors from The Voice, American Idol, Disney, America's Got Talent, Nickelodeon, X-Factor an
d many others. Fawn is a very fun, yet honest and straight-forward coach. She loves working with adults and children, and considers lessons a 'team effort to reach her students' goals. Being that music and the entertainment business are her career and life, she is current and relevant, yet has plenty of old school training to be well rounded and help students build a strong foundation. About five years ago I returned to the piano after years of neglect. One lucky day I happened upon a lovely teacher by the name of Fawn. She has taught me so many things, including learning to practice better/more efficiently which was exactly what I needed. Fawn advocates a relaxed, yet strict technique (and I really needed to learn to relax when playing, but also learn to be more disciplined). After studying with her for almost a year and a half my hands are much more relaxed and I'm playing more musically—she's helping me reverse 60 years of bad habits. She's found the secrets and knows how to teach them. Highly recommended.

I hold a master's in vocal performance from Cal State University, Fullerton and a Bachelor's in vocal performance from USC. I've been teaching voice for over 13 years. As a classical singer, I've had professional experience doing lead roles with various performing groups. This has taught me the level of expertise which is required in the real world of singing. In teaching singing, I focus on a breath-based technique where we focus on technical exercises designed to help you breathe more efficiently. We also work a lot on proper vowel formation and strive to eliminate excessive tension in your vocal instrument. Last but not least, we work on interpreting the music (musical phrasing, pronunciation, subtext). My goal is to help you become the best performer you can be. I encourage singers to take part in 2 studio recitals a year as well as various evaluations and competitions, depending on your own personal goals. I am a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) and ...

About Shannon
I hold a master's in voice from CSUF and a double bachelor's in piano and voice from USC. With over 13 years of experience as a private voice and piano instructor I have had the privilege of helping many students achieve their musical goals. As a member of MTAC and NATS, I enter many students in Certificate of Merit, Student Evaluation Program, and other festivals. For pianists, I work on songs, scales, theory, ear training and sometimes improvisation. For singers, we work on a breath-based breathing technique and songs that reinforce good singing habits but that are also engaging for the singer. We also work on sight singing and theory.Though my training is mostly in classical music, I do work on other styles with my students.

*** Lesson Details ***
For pianists, I recommend the Premier Alfred piano course, or for older beginners/ad
ults, we use Adult Piano Adventures. I also recommend purchasing a scale/technique book and a theory book.

For singers, please bring a recording device (phone is ok) so that you may later practice the exercises which we learn in the lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a Baldwin grand piano as well as an electronic piano in my studio. For budding pianists, I offer instruction with Piano Marvel software.

I sought Gabriels assistance in preparing me for an upcoming vocal Audition and to help me work out the kinks of whatever bad habits i may have deveoped over the summer. He himself has an amazing voice and charming personality. It helps to have an instructor that has been through auditions to give you pointers. He has an amazing ear as well, so he catches things—like if you tighten up on a note—and is quick to correct you. Each class i have walked away learning something new, and having something previously learned reinforced. He is well worth the time and money. Very professional.

About Ryland
Hi there! My name is Ryland and I am a full-time vocal coach. Thanks for taking a look at my profile here on TakeLessons - I know you have a lot of options, so let me tell you a little bit about what makes my teaching approach so unique and successful.

I received formal education for Vocal Performance from New York University. Since then, I have worked in nearly every angle of the entertainment industry from backup singing in a divey pub to vocal coaching and music directing a major motion picture, you name it. Understanding and coaching the artist at any particular juncture in their journey is one of the beautiful things about my job.

I work with singer-songwriters, pop artists, and theater performers not only to craft a sustainable approach to singing, but to connect with your voice and your material in a way that makes your per
formance unforgettable.

I have coached dozens of artists like you, dedicated to developing their instrument - be that for a gig, for an audition or to enhance their technique and the everyday reliability of their voice.

Recent credits include vocal coaching for the major motion picture musical "Crazy For The Boys" (Winter 2019), and creation and instruction of a new vocal development program for the transgender community at the Los Angeles LGBT Center's Trans*Lounge.

Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have; I'm already looking forward to working with you! - RS

PS - In addition to the session offerings I have listed on this site, I also offer 30 MINUTE LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AGES 8-15.

I had singing classes before for years, but before meeting Ryland I had a 2 year hiatus for many reasons. I needed someone that could help me evolve my rusty technique to gain vocal power while going thru FTM hormone therapy. In the first few weeks I already noticed a big difference in my voice, being able to hit such power that I didn’t had before. He would also notice my strenghts and weaknesses, and work on them with easy to understand concepts and techniques. Each week it gets more challenging and with him I’m able to get better each time, so it does end up not being challenging at all! He also understands that my voice is going thru changes, so everything is done in a healthy way, pushing forward my knowledge and practice while making it a safe transition! He’s kind enough to give me lessons that I work at home in-between classes as well. And to top it all, we both have the same sense of humor, so after a tough day at work, being able to do what I love while being a funny and relaxing experience it’s gold! Thank you Ryland! Can’t wait for my next class! :)

Ryland is the real deal. He’s an amazing teacher and has helped me resolve an issue that I’ve had my entire life with my voice. I always felt I was straining my voice and always had to make a huge effort trying to be heard and yet my voice would not project and often people would have a hard time hearing what I was saying. I always felt very frustrated because our voice is such an intimate expression of ourselves and I felt that I was making this huge effort and my voice did not feel like a natural expression of myself. Instead I felt tense and uncomfortable. When I picked up acting, the issues with my voice, the need to be heard and to have a confident vocal range became more urgent. I didn’t really believe it would be possible because I had tried a speech therapist in the past but Ryland has taught me how to make lasting changes to my voice that have made a huge difference in my life. Ryland is incredibly gifted. He has an amazing ear and can hear things about my voice that I don’t even know how to put into words. We worked over a period of several months and he was a truly wonderful teacher, not only in terms of the work we did during the lessons but also his kindness, compassion and nurturing were equally important in helping me make the changes. I can’t recommend him highly enough.

Ryland is an exceptional communicator, helping me learn to get out of my own way and trust my voice that's already here. Together we developed a daily practice, specifically designed to strengthen my weaknesses and carve out the grooves I need in order to do my best work. Join forces with Ryland and you will build confidence, you will build YOUR voice, and you will move forward with excitement and anticipation!
