I have been helping beginners and other more experienced musicians to learn to play the piano for 23 years. We can start from scratch and advance through five levels of piano methods. I have used various published methods over the years depending upon the experience and age of the student. I emphasize fundamental techniques of piano playing and music reading. A good piano player can eventually play any style he or she would like to focus on. It is never too late, you can begin to learn to play piano today!

My background in classical, jazz, pop, songwriting, composing, and arranging all make me an extremely versatile piano teacher. I teach using a personal method which combines parts of all the most popular methods for piano to create an extremely varied and flexible method for each individual student. Using my experience as a composer/arranger, I frequently create arrangements for students when they express a desire to learn specific music, as I skillfully appropriate arrangements for each students' skill level.
Students will not only learn how to play the piano, but how to express themselves with it, as I keep creativity a high priority in students' progress and encourage improvisation. Students will also be introduced to basic music theory which will help them grow even further in their musical development and stimulate creativity. Many of my students have gone on to win awards, study piano at places such as Berklee College of Music, learned how to improvise, and even composed ...

I started taking lessons with Candida since March this year. With some background in guitar (mostly self-taught, mixed with learning from different teachers on and off), I wanted to create a more solid music foundation. I wanted not just to play guitar by following videos and tabs, but become a “musician”, that can improvise, play by ear, compose my own pieces eventually. My goals included learning how to read sheet music, training for a better ear, basic singing and piano skills. Candida created a personalized learning plan with all the above goals in mind, gave me homework each week that was catered to my strengths and interests. Her vast knowledge in music education also allowed me to learn tactics backed by research to accelerate my memory and overall learning. We focused on the following topics this year: For singing, correct placement of head voice and chest voice; practices to soften head voice in higher notes and gain a smoother transition. Ear train that focused on singing (not just listening) melodic and harmonic chords (triads and different extensions). Sheet music reading and playing for several classical pieces (Mozart, Chopin, Tchaikovsky). Basic chords voicing, cadences, inversions, and accompanying singing for some classic songs (Elton John, Cold Play for example). I was amazed at how much progress I made in just 9 months. I am able to sing confidently several songs I loved (including Bohemian Rhapsody) while accompanying myself on piano (I had only touched piano probably only 3 times before March). I also added couple of classical piano pieces into my repertoire (including a beautiful Waltz by Chopin that dumbfounded my friends). I can “hear” melodies better and locate notes with much ease. Candida also encourages her students to show their progress and perform, and I even participated in two student recitals this year, and was quite proud of the performances. I can't recommend Candida enough!

When you own a piano, moving takes a bit more planning. Should you hire a professional, or do it yourself? Here, Helendale, CA teacher Sylvia S. shares what to keep in mind to make sure your instrument stays safe and sound... Many years ago, when my family relocated, the expertise for moving our household grand piano was delegated to professional furniture movers.
