I've been taking lessons from Rick for over 1.5 years and have shown steady improvement thanks to him. He is always prepared and gears the lessons toward the style of music I enjoy playing. He is patient and keeps the lessons at a comfortable pace while also making sure to push me to progress my abilities.

I'm a mid 40's guy who's wanted to play guitar since I was a kid. After a failed attempt in my teens, I hadn't revisited it (unless air-guitar counts) until this year. Fortunately for me, through Take Lessons, I found Rick. He is so very patient, friendly and flexible. The one thing I most enjoy about our lessons is that it's like visiting with a friend for an hour each week - whether we talk about music theory, new guitars or just about our lives, he always is engaged and accessible.

I can't say enough about Rick, he is a very knowledgeable musician, he genuinely cares that you reach your goal and is a really, really pleasant person. If your dream is just to play some of your favorite songs, or to go on to be a professional musician - Rick is definitely who I would recommend.

First rate instructor - fabulous

I'm a 50 something music student who loves guitar but has no particular talent. Rick has been patient with me and his lessons have improved my playing after a short time. I'm playing songs that I would otherwise never attempt.

Neil D.

Boerne, TX

About Neil

I am a music educator of ten years: I have taught both middle school band and choir to at-risk youth, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy. My principal instrument is the saxophone (which I began playing in 1990), and I play many other instruments. As for my formal education: I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2005 from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010).

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal is to create life-long musicians...
I focus on the needs a
nd interests of my students, thereby representing all musical genres and including all cultures.
My lessons are structured into activities that incorporate various aspects of music appreciation:
Music theory, music history, music technology, performance practice, etc. (making such lessons comprehensive)

*** Studio Equipment ***
As a musician of 25 years, I believe it is the "musician that makes the instrument", and not the other way around. That is, I do not believe it is necessary to purchase the 'top' brand for your instrument in order to achieve the desired sound. Frequent practice builds skills and results in the desired tones people wish to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always bring my instrument, metronome, tuner, music stand and stand for my instrument, including lesson materials and supplies.
I expect students to obtain a metronome and to always have their music folder (with ALL music etc.) available for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
All genres, all styles & all cultures! I teach students of all ages--mostly at my home studio, but I also travel to students' homes, churches, and, as an alternative during the Summer only, I am willing to meet with students in the Practice Rooms in the Fine Arts Building at UTSA.

I can highly recommend Hayes as an instructor for beginning students. He has a great personality, really connects with kids, and is very enthusiastic about music and teaching. He is very patient, explains things clearly to my son, and always teaches in a professional manner. My son has taken lessons for 6 months and we are really happy with Hayes' lessons.

Alfredo V.

San Antonio, TX

About Alfredo

I studied classical percussion in college and then specialized on drums at the Drummers Collective in New York City. I have toured with bands and played many times in front of crowds of more than 25 000 people. I have TV experience as well. I also have worked as a session drummer on several records for big labels (BMG and Sony Music among them). I work as a producer and my approach to teaching comes from my love of Music in general. I have been a drums instructor for more than 30 years and my students always get the gigs. I speak English and Spanish. My teaching style is fun and has a very cle
ar outline, remaining flexible within it. I keep learning and practicing every day, and am very open to having fun together while learning. If you practice, the results are shown on every lesson and you will really notice it!

*** Lesson Details ***
We start by learning how to Play, reading is not the first approach, but will be learned around the 3rd month . Everyone can do it and if you feel you can't, I'll prove otherwise during the first lesson. Afterwards we practice simple techniques and start with simple independence exercises, which feel great. You will be playing a beat with simple independence the first time we try it, which can be during the first lesson and no longer than three lessons afterwards. As you progress with the independence in rock style, we will work in other styles like funk, jazz, Latin, odd meters and African and the main focus will be that you become a great drummer. Whether you are aiming to become a pro or playing as a hobby, you will find great value in these lessons.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have 11 drum sets, recording gear, guitar and bass amplifiers and a pa system.

*** Travel Equipment ***
His own set. I could also rent them a set if needed, but having their own set is better for me. Sometimes I rented a set to my students in order for them to decide if they wanted to buy one.

*** Specialties ***
I use the Drummers Collective approach. I teach styles such as rock, jazz, funk, Afro-Cuban, pop, Brazilian, etc...

Alfredo is an incredibly accomplished Drummer and musician! His professional musical experience and accomplishments are quite impressive. It's humbling to have someone with his professional music background as a teacher. But don't let his background intimidate you. He is very patient, and has a well structured methodology to teach you how to become a good drummer. Alfredo's technique is not directed to just learn easy groves to play along with music. Rather, he is committed to teaching you the proper techniques that will give you the foundation to become a skilled drummer if you are willing to put in the time. It's challenging, to say the least, but I think it will pay dividends in the long-run. When you are around Alfredo, it's obvious that he "loves" playing the drums, as well as composing and playing other music/instruments. It's also great fun to play your exercises, while Alfredo plays along with you (challenging not to be distracted) on his drum set or bass guitar. Great FUN!

Jacqueline E.

San Antonio, TX

About Jacqueline

If you're looking for a well-rounded music teacher who can give you the right tools for improving singing and musicianship skills in a safe and positive environment, you've come to the right place!

I have taught students from 7 to 18, but I also love to teach adult beginners. I am passionate about finding the best teaching techniques for students of all different learning styles and inspiring my students to not give up on themselves so they can enjoy singing for years and years to come. I am patient and work diligently to get to know you as a person and as a student so you can feel success
ful and achieve your goals.

I have learned solid classical vocal technique from the very best, and I believe everyone deserves the same tools. (My teacher has had many students that have gone on to have very successful singing careers, all over the United States and some internationally.) As a singer, I have over ten years’ performance experience as a chorister and soloist and four years' experience in singing opera/musical theatre. I am a classically trained pianist, and also have experience conducting choirs from the elementary level to the high school level.

*** Lesson Details ***
More lesson times may be available than what is shown. Please send me a message if you would like to find out about other times.

Some examples of goals I can help you with:
- Improving singing technique
- Learning about vocal health
- Developing inner hearing and intonation
- Learning music theory and music history
- Unleashing your natural musicality in singing
- Increasing self-awareness of bodily tension and how to release it

When you arrive for our first lesson, I'll start by getting to know your musical tastes/aspirations. Then you’ll sing a couple vocal exercises so I can listen carefully to your voice and how I can help you.

I always start with a strong foundation in the fundamentals. After we spend at least two lessons simply establishing singing technique and going through exercises for singing, I will introduce music that is appropriate for your level of development, and then we will explore music you like.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Practice room with a mirror and either an upright or grand piano

*** Student Expectations ***
I expect students to be punctual. I also require students to come prepared with a pencil and a notepad/notebook so they will know what to practice for next week. Parents or friends may sit and watch and/or take notes for the student, but any visitors must be silent throughout the entire lesson so as not to be a distraction to the student; s/he has to be fully focused in order to get as much out of the lesson as possible. I HIGHLY encourage the student to bring a recording device to record our lesson to study the vocal exercises in personal practice sessions after our lesson.

*** Specialties ***
I am first a singer, then a pianist, then a conductor. I am a member of many professional music organizations (National Association for Music Education, Music Teachers National Association, American Choral Directors Association, Organization of American Kodaly Educators, and Church Music Association of America). I frequently attend conferences and keep up with professional journal articles. My personal music teaching philosophy are based on music pedagogies of Zoltan Kodaly, Edwin Gordon, John Feierabend, Karl Orff, and Justine Bayard Ward.

My music philosophy:
1. Music is for everyone. Anyone can learn how to sing beautifully and be a musician! However, it takes time and hard work to see progress. I want to give you the right tools (proper singing technique and proper mindset) to help you foster a love of singing for years and years to come.
2. Mastering the fundamentals of singing and learning about vocal health is crucial! Whatever your goals, starting with and maintaining a good technique with consistent practice will keep you from injury so you can enjoy singing for a long time.
3. The more well-rounded you are as a musician, the better. In singing lessons, I incorporate aspects of music theory and ear-training appropriate to your level so that you can have a holistic music education and be an independent, thinking musician.
4. Hard work is satisfying! I believe that with discipline and diligence, any student can achieve great results, so I push my students to really focus in order to tap into their deep potential. I am always supportive and encouraging with my students in their efforts.
5. Music is meant to be a beautiful expression of your heart and soul! I believe that while good technique and musicianship are very important, that is only half the story. At every stage, I try to help students connect with the music inside them so they can be free to let it out, naturally and expressively.
6. Listening is vital to understanding music! Students can expect listen to recordings of music and singers to gain insight to and understanding of style. I encourage my students to listen to or watch recordings to work on the more organic elements of music, which cannot be gained from academic study.
