Born in the Midwest, I spent seven graduate years in Paris performing, teaching, and researching. I have come to see music lessons as both a personal process of body awareness and harnessing mental energy, and as an interpersonal process of exploring the dynamic between student and teacher. I currently sing with the Minnesota Chorale and the Bach Society of Minnesota.

About Laura

Laura has been teaching private lessons and classes since 2009 and is currently teaching in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood of Minneapolis. Laura has helped students begin new musical journeys, whether at age five or age fifty-five, and encourages seekers of all ages to approach the power of music in

Laura's been absolutely great with our children (now 10 and 11). She tailors her teaching style to each one, interacting with them at their level, engaging them, and pushing their music forward -- both their practical skills and their understanding of music itself -- in a manner that seems fun and personal. One of my children just asked what I was doing, and when told and asked if he had anything to say about Laura he replied:
"She is very nice and she is funny and she is a very good teacher"

She was great! I think she's going to be a wonderful fit for our daughter, who is excited to return!

The first week is awesome. I had taken a class at a college for a quarter. I did very well and learned a lot. With that, John knew right where to start with me. Looking forward to getting the best sound I can. Thanks, John.

John is THE BEST. He is as knowledgeable as they come, inspires my daughter to become her best self, is communicative and flexible. Honestly, I am scared he will become too popular — he's OURS! <3

I teach all aspects of guitar playing. Improvisation, theory, technique, ear training, songwriting, reading and basic music notation. My lessons are designed to fit the needs of each individual student. I will begin with an evaluation to see where you are at and what your goals are

About Michael

I have been performing since age 7 playing classical piano in recitals with my sister. I got my first guitar at the age of 12. At 15 I was playing around town with different bands. After years of playing in garage bands, I applied to Wayne State University and enrolled in their music department. I

Outstanding Teacher

I came to Mike with 25 years of playing experience and was expecting to grind through theory like I've done with past instructors. We jammed for a couple of minutes at our first lesson and he took it in a totally different direction, which has been amazing!!! He is so incredibly tuned in to what each individual student needs that he knew what I needed way before I figured it out. I love his approach to playing, which for an advanced player, focuses on getting ideas from your head to your fingers and I love that he teaches the theory aspect of playing, not as the focus, but as an explanation of why certain ideas work and certain ones don't. He doesn't jam theory down your throat, so lessons and practice are truly enjoyable and don't feel like a chore.

In addition to be a truly gifted teacher, Mike is just an awesome dude -- it's obvious that he loves to teach and really invests himself in getting his students to where they want to go. I can't recommend him highly enough.

Great experience!

Mike is an outstanding teacher. As a total guitar novice, his patience and instructional ability really helped me take small steps into a much bigger world. Between the in studio lessons and the exercises he gave me to do at home, I really feel like I learned a great deal in a short time period. I hope to work with him again in the future and would strongly recommend him to anyone thinking of guitar lessons.

Wonderful Teacher

My son has been taking lessons with Michael for about a year, and we are both very satisfied customers. When my son first came to Mike, he was anxious about his upcoming audition for the top jazz band at his school. Mike helped him prepare and feel more confident, and he was able to earn his place in the band. Since then Mike has worked with him on technique and style and helped him progress incredibly. Mike is a great teacher, very professional, and a super person!

"If you have a daughter who wants to learn to play a guitar CALL SASHA!!!! She is great with teenagers. Our daughter already played violin so she already knew how to read music and had an understanding of playing instruments. We just wanted to get her started so she could carry on by herself. When we explained this to Sasha, she made sure our daughter's lessons let her do just what we asked for. She is very understanding of the typical shyness of teenage girls and helped our daughter flourish in many ways. I would recommend Sasha to anyone, any age, or any needs."

How Tension Affects Your Voice (And What to Do About It!)

As a beginner singer, it's important to understand how unnecessary tension affects your tone and your breath support. Here, NY teacher Nadia B. shares what to keep in mind and how to combat that tension...   Singing is, in many ways, a very natural activity. We all have a voice, and it is meant to be used to communicate in speech and in music. However, when one delves more into the art of singing through voice lessons, practice, and performance, tension sometimes creeps in. It can seem …
