Hello, I am a professional musician with over 21 years of service as a military bandsmen. I've been stationed all over the world and have had the privilege to perform in some of the greatest concert halls. I love to work with students of all ages and can teach beginning-intermediate piano, and beginning-advanced flute. Prior to joining the military, I taught general music in the Texas Public School system. I have a bachelor€'™s degree in music education from the University of Texas at Arlington. I am a very active flutist in this area, performing with The Tidewater Winds, The Hampton Roads Philharmonic, and various small chamber groups.

I am near the top-end of her student's age bracket... I hope she increases her range in a year or two. I'm returning to lessons for my own enjoyment....and, in the first two weeks she taught more than a year with others. Specifically she showed me how to practice non-vibrato long tones to increase my volume and tone; she is helping me get solo pieces metrically correct, before I start adding the dynamics. And, she is helping to adjust my posture while playing,
I enjoy playing duets with her near the end of the lesson and hearing her play professionally at concerts around the peninsula.
I wish the lessons were longer.
I highly recommend her!

About Barbara
Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills.

I am an original New Yorker but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in many choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member.

I rejoice in the success that I see in my students as they learn and gain an appreciation for the gift of music. They become more
and more eager to share and more and more open to the possibilities ahead.

*** Lesson Details ***
I listen well to my students. They are free and encouraged to express their goals and soon, they become more and more comfortable doing so. They begin to understand that even though I am their instructor, we are working as a team and that my goals for them are directly tied to the goals they have set for themselves.

My teaching style is natural, relaxed and yet, very enthusiastic, all at the same time. I have patience in abundance and my continual student affirmation is well received. I give most attention to personalizing instruction for each of my students. My passion for musical expression is contagious and readily shared. It is a joy to teach music, to contribute to the growth and delight that I witness through a student's progress.

I have taught music to both children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels. My teaching approach remains the same, save for the goals that suit the specific student, which we discover early on, sometimes even at the first session, together, right from the start. My beginning students receive the attention necessary to encourage their desire to persevere, which includes positive feedback (which is abundant) and a teaching style that fits his/her level of learning. My student's success is my goal. This is my jubilant mission.

About Christopher
I received my Doctorate of Musical Arts from Rutgers University in January of 2017, and have over ten years of professional teaching and performing experience. Whether you are just starting out on a horn or have a few years under your belt, I can help you realize your musical potential and show you how rewarding playing a musical instrument can be!

*** Lesson Details ***
The focus of each lesson depends heavily on the level of each student... beginning students can expect a larger portion of the instruction to focus on fundamentals and music reading so as to lay a foundation for further success. For these students I will generally work out of an existing band method as these are more than adequate, and perhaps add a few supplemental materials which in include simple exercises specific to the instrument, scale patterns, and rhythm/musi
c reading examples.

More advanced students can expect to review proper technique and work on appropriate etudes and solo repertoire. I spend a lot of time working on practice technique. Confidence building if necessary. If the student plays in a jazz band we can work on bebop/swing/improvisation as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a stand, tuner, metronome, and video and audio recording devices should we decide to use them.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide teaching materials and can bring a music stand. Student needs working instrument, and should own a tuner, metronome, and music stand. For a tuner/metronome I recommend a Korg TM-50. Nearly anything will do for a stand but I'd avoid a flimsy fold-up stand. I recommend an On-Stage SM7211. Can't go wrong with a Manhasset black stand either.

*** Specialties ***
Classical solo repertoire and audition preparation. Blues and bebop improvisation. Musicality and lyricism. Technique.

Fantastic Experience!

As a colleague of Chris' I can heartily recommend his teaching to any trombonists wishing to hone their skills as musicians. Chris focuses on the individual needs of each student, working to tailor his lessons to meet their specific needs and face their unique challenges. His attention to detail and patience helps each student build a strong foundation in musicality and fantastic brass playing. I recommend him highly as both a superb educator and performer!

Trumpet Lessons for my son

My son is 12 years old, has been playing Trumpet and Flugelhorn for about 5 years, and he needed a private instruction to take his music to the next level. He has made great progress under Chris' guidance, and his easy going manner has made our son feel very comfortable with the lesson environment. He is very talented, and would highly recommend Chris for anyone looking to further their capabilities.

Are you new to playing the flute? Or have you been playing for a while, and you want to improve? Do you need to work on music for band or orchestra? I can help in all of these areas. I was in both band and orchestra from middle school on up, marching band included. I have been a teacher my whole career, teaching flute and then becoming an English teacher.

I started flute at age 10. My own teacher was the student of the principal flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Bernard Goldberg. My teacher taught me everything that she herself was learning from Goldberg, who himself had learned from the renowned flautist George Barrere.

We will work on tone, embouchure, and correct breathing and posture as well as music fundamentals, phrasing/interpretation, and of course, good technique. I try to teach with a sense of humor, joy, and encouragem
ent. My goal is to teach not only how to play the flute but also to help all my students learn to love music and to be proud to be a musician.

I count Ms. Beth among the best teachers I have ever had. She is good at explaining things so that anyone can understand. She is always patient and kind, and brings fun and humor into the learning process. With Ms. Beth you will advance quickly if you follow her instruction on how to practice. She knows her stuff, but more importantly, she knows how to teach it so that you understand, remember, and really enjoy your flute lessons! As as student I knew that Ms. Beth really cared about me and I can definitely say that I wouldn´t be where I am today without her. PLEASE don´t miss the opportunity to take lessons with her! She has all the qualities of the kind of teacher people look for but rarely find.

LETS MAKE MUSIC!! With viola being my main instrument after falling in love with the music over 15 years ago I have taken a liking to the cello and violin as well. I am a degreed musician that is classically trained. Jazz band, symphony orchestra, quartets, weddings and various studio recordings have helped in creating the musician I am today. Being able to connect and make music relatable to any student is something i take pride in. Some students aren't able to have one on one time with their conductor and I believe that is where the private teacher comes in.

Let's build. Let's grow. Let's make music!
