About John
I have an associates degree in music and I have been teaching lessons for 10 years now. I also have experience as a substitute teacher. As a substitute, I have taught all grades, all subjects, and I have helped out many kinds of students each with their own way of learning.

Besides teaching, I love learning too. Anytime I have a question I immediately start seeking out the answer. Learning never stops!

*** Lesson Details ***
Ever wondered how musicians write music? Why do they make the choices they make? Why do those choices work? Why does music work the way that it does? I can answer all these questions and much more.

With me as your guide, I will unlock your musical superpowers and make you capable of things you didn't know were possible. I have many different methods for teaching not only technique, but how to listen, and ho
w to think creatively so that you can unlock your full potential.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide my guitar, picks, and tuner and that's really all you will need as well.

I'll occasionally bring my laptop with me to use some music software to assist in my lessons.

I'll always have pens and paper so I can make notes or diagrams if needed. I highly recommend that my students have a spiral notebook so I can more easily cater to them.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in many musical genres including rock, ska, punk, progressive, jazz, folk, and more. Music theory is a big part of what I do as it's the universal language of music. If you learn enough theory, you can learn ANY instrument.

About Stephanie
Stephanie has been teaching harp students of all ages privately since 2007. Outside of her private studios in the Heights and Woodlands/Spring, in 2018, she completed a year-long musical residency with the TREK program at Travis Elementary, and previously worked at the Monarch Institute, a school for students with neurological disorders. She was a Young Artist with Da Camera of Houston from 2016–2018, where she had the opportunity to develop programming with organizations ranging from the Museum of Fine Arts Houston to the Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center and worked at elementary and middle schools throughout HISD. Through Da Camera, she was also awarded a fellowship in May 2017 to develop a program at Meyerland Middle School that used music and visual art to combat bullying and facilitate classroom discussions.

Locally,
she is best known for co–founding the Houston Youth Harp Ensemble, a semester–long program for harp students of all ages and levels in Houston. During their inaugural season, the first semester was dedicated to the music of movies and musicals, and the spring semester was focused on learning the music of cultures around the world. Before moving to Houston, she coached non-major, college–aged students at the University of Illinois, taught music classes at the prestigious International Preschool in New York City, and developed a teaching and playing program for children with behavioral and communication disorders in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

About Al
Hey there,

I'm Al. Born and raised Houstonian. I love my wife, my dog, and my guitar. In my spare time I enjoy playing videos games (my favorite being Super Smash Bros.), learning new skills (I'm currently taking an online computer science course through Rice), and creating and producing original music by myself and with friends. I have an album out on Spotify and all streaming platforms called Oceanside of Someday, and a second album and collaboration in the works. I am a core member of the Friendswood Friends Church worship band for which I play guitar and bass.

I am musically inspired by prog-folk titans such as Justin Vernon and Sufjan Stevens; country folk legends such as Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash; song-writing heroes like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Cat Stevens (Or Yusuf). I enjoy contemporary artists like Julien Baker,
Khruangbin, Kurt Elling, and Polypha. I also Like Childish Gambino, Kid Cudi, and Kanye West. My old favorites are Coheed and Cambria, Dream Theater, and Manchester Orchestra. Like a lot of folks born in the 90s, I grew up listening to post-punk bands like Green Day, Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, The Used, and My Chemical Romance. And there were the NuMetal groups such as KoRn, Slipknot, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, and Disturbed. My guilty pleasures include Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande.

I've been teaching guitar for years now, and I've been playing since I was 12. It has been a constant source of joy throughout my life. The guitar is an instrument that will challenge your discipline, mind, and strength; students that are persistent will be rewarded with a life-long skill and friend in the instrument. I am humbled by the positive feedback I have received as a teacher; I am very proud to say I was a Student Favorite on TakeLessons for 2 years running before I went on hiatus. Now that I'm back, I'm eager to earn that title once again.
I have students of all ages from all walks of life, from toddlers to CEOs, and I can teach you too. No matter your level of expertise with the guitar, I work very hard so my students might come away from each lesson having learned something. Around 60% of my students have been beginners, 20% having prior experience, and 10% having many years of experience.

I firmly believe that anybody can play the guitar if they set their mind to it. Heard the name Django Reindhart? The man was a legend. He had 3 fingers on his left hand and is remembered as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. It comes down to practice, the will to learn and improve, and consistency, and above all the love of music. My curriculum is designed to reinforce these values.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm always happy to help.

If you're looking for a challenge, developing a skill with lifelong payoff, and are ready to begin your musical journey, pick up where you left off, or need some coaching in the right direction, then let's begin. You book the time, and I'll take it from there.

I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Sincerely,

Al

About Andrew
I've been practicing and studying music for nearly 12 years. Conceptual performance, free improvisation and Sonic sculpture for over 5. For me, music isn't just about playing an instrument. A musical practice is an opportunity for incredible self growth. Excercise for our minds and awareness.

I've worked with students ranging from age 3 to age 62 in the year or so I've been tutoring. I've taught piano mostly ,but am more technically proficient with guitar(electic/acoustic/classical).

I'm a songwriter and recording/performing artist, my style is very ecclectic and inspired by anything from classical, jazz, avant garde, to pop and folk music. I'm confident and versatile. Im comfortable playing or even performing with most instruments. It's taken alot of practice, reasearch, experimentation, and collaboration but over time musc has give
n my experience life and enriched my life and those around me.

I believe in the cultivation of a living musicality.

My approach emphasises the importance of process, exploration and discovery, as well as the study and analysis of traditional concepts. I propose, active listening to be the simplest form of composition. And as musicians an active ear is central, not only in practice, but generally, for creative evolution and innovation.

I've found the most effective methods effectively balance theory and practice.

I believe the biggest inhibitor to growth, musical or otherwise, is a lack of confidence. A lack that comes from too much pressure to produce idealized results-- fear of mistakes...

I embrace the developmental process,
I work with every student to make each lesson plan efficient, meaningful and inspiring.
