Music has been one of my greatest passions since I was a little girl, and teaching it is my favorite way to share my love of music. I teach students of all ages and skill levels from early beginners to experienced piano players who want to bring their performance to a higher le
vel.

I emphasize piano technique, musicianship, performance skills and music history. But I also use piano lessons to help my students develop life skills, such as concentration, focus, poise and discipline. I love to see my students to build confidence and self-esteem from playing beautiful music.

Michael M.

Pennington, NJ

About Michael

Born and raised in New Jersey, I have been involved with music for many years. The instruments that I play include Trumpet, French Horn, Handbells, Organ, Voice, and Piano. I received my formal education at Moravian College in Bethlehem, PA, which is where I earned a B.A. degree with Honors in Music. In order to obtain my Honors, I chose to develop elementary lessons on Chinese folk music. In my Junior year of college, I performed a dual media recital in both Voice and Piano, and for my Senior year recital, I focused on giving a Vocal performance. These recitals demonstrated the musical t
alent and techniques that I had developed throughout my experience at college. In addition to my musical experiences in college, I have also learned about various pedagogical approaches through both my vocal studies as well as my studies on the keyboard. There is always more than one approach to teaching musical concepts! As a musician, I have performed in both the Bethlehem/Allentown area and the central New Jersery area. In addition, I have sung as a member of the Princeton Pro Musica and sat as a member on the executive board of the Princeton Girlchoir. These experiences have enhanced my professional insight as a musical instructor today. At present, I am a teacher in the classroom, an organist at a local Presbyterian church, and a private piano instructor. Overall, I thoroughly enjoy seeing my students grow and develop as musicians.

*** Lesson Details ***
My instruction correlates with the age, the musical background, and the public/private school music curriculum of the student. Each lesson is a special musical vignette in the sense that it is a unique learning time for the student. It is important for the student to be motivated by the material that they are given and to have a full understanding of the concept(s) that were taught in the lesson. Above all other reasons, it is most important for the student to enjoy their piano lessons and want to come back the next week. Therefore, it is my job as the instructor to inspire them to practice and benefit from each and every lesson. Whether it be vocal or piano instruction, each lesson consists of fun warm-ups, interesting technical exercises, and repertoire of all sorts. What the student learns in 3-6 months depends upon the motivation of the student as well as my ability to teach what the student needs to know in order to achieve their goals as a pianist and/or vocalist. Regarding my methods of instructing piano students, I use the Middle C method for players of all levels. Those who are more advanced use triads as well. My overall goal as a teacher is to work with my students and give them the skills that are necessary to play music that they enjoy.

*** Studio Equipment ***
lessons in living room; 2 pianos (C2 Yamaha and Steinway upright); organ

*** Specialties ***
Middle C Piano Method using instructional materials of the Bastien's and Alfred Publications

Michael is a great teacher. He focuses on understanding of concepts. For more fluent play we always need to practice a lot, but if we do not understand the concepts behind musical notation, we do not even know where to begin. He is also very encouraging and guides us out of mistakes in a way that the logic sticks. Highly recommended - you will enjoy learning with him

Lessons with Mike Mraz was a Christmas present from my son, Andrew. I enjoy singing, yet have never had occasion to study music or to take private lessons. Mike helped me clarify my goals: breath control, vocal mechanics, reading music and having fun. He graciously sent me some primer materials and located sheet music for several of my favorite Broadway show tunes. Our five 45-minute sessions together were both instructive and enjoyable. As I approach age 70, I can check "work with a voice coach" on my "Bucket List." Kudos for Mike!

Alexandra P.

Princeton, NJ

About Alexandra

I am interested in teaching private lessons to each individual student - taking into account your goals, strengths, weaknesses, and background. I will never teach by a method that does not account for the unique qualities of each student. I use what I have learned through many years of musical study to teach you in the most efficient and beneficial way, based on YOUR needs.

As a voice student, I will ask you about your taste in music, what your goals are as a singer, and encourage you to suggest repertoire you'd like to learn. In addition, I will do an assessment of your entire voice - f
rom posture and breathing to articulation and expression - and introduce repertoire that will help you become a better singer. I am comfortable teaching pieces written in English, Latin, French, German, and Italian.

I am a classically trained singer with a background in classical piano. I have performed in musicals, operettas, operas, and recitals in soprano repertoire. I received bachelor's degrees in voice performance and music education at The Pennsylvania State University. I recently completed a master's degree in voice performance and pedagogy at Westminster Choir College. Over the past 7 years, I've gained experience teaching private piano, private voice, group voice, traditional choirs, pop styles, musical theater, classical repertoire, and have worked with students of all ages.

I am happy to report that in addition to offering in studio lessons, I am now available as an Online Instructor via Skype.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a teacher that will help you realize your full potential. In the lesson, we will spend time doing physical warm ups (light stretching) and breathing warm ups, vocalizing in all parts of your range, and working on repertoire. I am very open to helping students with music outside of the lessons, such as music for a school choir or an upcoming audition or call-back. My goal as a voice teacher is to help you in whatever way you need - whether you want to audition for a choir or a musical, learn how to sing classically, start your own band, or just become a better singer. I am understanding and flexible, and only ask that you do what you can outside of the lesson. A little bit of practice each week is better than none at all, and I will teach you ways to practice.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio, practice rooms, or classrooms, all have pianos, and seating for parents

Ari F.

East Brunswick, NJ

About Ari

Hi! My name is Ari, I'm 20 years old and a junior at Kean University, studying Music Education. I am a 3.8 GPA student who has been studying cello since I was 8 and piano since I was 3. I have a permissive teaching style that is sensitive to developmental disability and mental illness, but also can be quite harrowing and strict if you have the desire to truly become a great musician.
My specialties are strings, music theory, and piano. I'm very energetic and expect genuine effort from all my students. I try to make things fun, so I hope you try too!
