I shared with Melanie that I already new how to read music, both bass and treble clef. I ask her to help me with improv. I wanted to be able to play the blues in any key. We started from the basics and worked our way towards my goal. She is an excelent and very talented musician.

Melanie Conley is an excellent musician with a wide variety of musical experiences. My first contact with Melanie was as her high school band director at Pike High School. She graduated high school as the most outstanding music student in her Senior class. She was talented in several styles of music not only as a pianist but also with multiple band instruments. More recently I have had contact with Melanie as a guest pianist for my local church and have had several conversations with her about her teaching experiences. I feel sure she will be an excellent person for motivating any student wanting to learn to become a fine pianist....

Elizabeth E.

Indianapolis, IN

About Elizabeth

Currently teaching in Indianapolis!

I have taught private piano lessons to students ages 5 to adult since 2011. I'm a member of the Indianapolis Piano Teachers Association and also work frequently as an accompanist for middle and high school band students competing in solo competitions. I studied piano privately for 15 years, including as a student at the Jacobs School of Music at IU and at Rocky Ridge Music Center in Estes Park, Colorado.

I structure my lessons according to students' individual interests and strengths, while building a strong foundation in piano technique and music th
eory. With beginning and intermediate students I typically use the Piano Adventures series of books, which I supplement with music in a variety of styles ranging from authentic classical repertoire to jazz. Whatever your experience or goals, we'€™ll work together to come up with a plan that works for you.

I'm a patient, encouraging teacher and we have fun during lessons. I also expect my students to practice daily at home so that they can make steady progress.

PLEASE NOTE: Students need to have a piano, whether acoustic or digital, to practice on at home. This is necessary in order for students to progress and to develop good piano technique. If you prefer to purchase an electric piano, look for one with touch-sensitive, weighted keys, which will mimic the feel of an acoustic piano. If you do not have a piano, I'm happy to offer advice on finding one!

Elizabeth did a great job making my son feel comfortable and introducing him to the basic concepts of the piano. Unfortunately, he was hesitant and not willing to participate in this lesson. My husband and I look forward to the next lesson and his willingness and enthusiasm to participate with Elizabeth.

Jay E.

Indianapolis, IN

About Jay

My musical journey began the with piano at the age of seven. I took regular lesson all the way through high school, eventually performing works such as Gershwin Etudes, Chopin Waltzes, Debussy Arabesques, and Beethoven Piano Sonatas. My trumpet performing started in 1993 and continues, having earned two degrees in trumpet performance, and performed with groups such as the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra and Lone Star Wind Orchestra.

I have been teaching privately for 13 years, most recently having a studio of around 50 students in the Dallas area, where my students have performed at even
ts such as the state solo and ensemble contest in Austin, and it groups such as the Texas All State Band, and Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra to name a few. I now continue my private lesson instruction in Indianapolis. I have learned to adjust my teaching technique to match each individual, whether it be the music difficulty, learning pace, or musical genre preference. I have taught trumpet students of all ages and abilities, as well as beginning and intermediate piano and french horn. I look forward to helping you make beautiful music on your instrument!

My teaching philosophy

Private lessons are a one on one experience that give students guidance on their specific musical needs. Rather than only working on pieces for un upcoming audition or competition, I emphasize working on a variety of repertoire that will improve all aspects of one’s musicianship. Lessons are not a weekly practice or coaching session, but rather a time for me to help students with what they have already been practicing. More specifically, I help with embouchure formation, tone production, note reading, practice technique, musical phrasing, breathing, performance anxiety, rhythm, music theory, bad habits, or anything that will help the student make better music in the long term. I also frequently provide musical examples and inspiration by playing for my students.

Lesson Policies

Students are required to practice a minimum of fifteen to forty-five minutes per day (depending on the student’s age), six days per week.

Students are responsible for purchasing their own lesson materials, such as books, valve oil, metronome, etc. Piano students must also have a well maintained piano to practice on. High quality electric keyboards with 88 keys, weighted and touch sensitive, are acceptable.

I have a 24-hour lesson rescheduling policy. If a student fails to provide notice via phone, text or email at least 24 hours prior to the starting time of the lesson, or misses a lesson unannounced, they will be charged for the full lesson cost. If adequate notification is given, the lesson will be made up at a later date. Lessons MAY NOT BE MISSED WITHOUT MAKEUP. I do, however, allow students to miss lessons without makeup during the months of December and August (up to two lessons each month) and July (no limit), and one lesson for spring break.

With rare exception, all of my students take weekly lessons. Students who keep a regular, weekly schedule improve at a far better pace than those who miss frequently.

*** Studio Equipment ***

*** Travel Equipment ***

*** Specialties ***

James H.

Sheridan, IN

About James

My name is James Hawes. I provide weekly in-home private music lessons in piano, brass, and classical guitar. I travel quite a bit and am available to students in the greater Indianapolis and surrounding areas. Students of all ages and levels of experience are welcome. I've been teaching for many years and I love what I do. I am very patient and easy going. I love working with kids and work hard to be a positive influence in my students' lives. I am very accountable for my students' progress and happiness with what they are learning.

Below is a brief bio.

I have been performing an
d teaching music for over 25 years. After having piano lessons as a young child, I began studying both French Horn and Classical Guitar at the age of 12. At that time I had two great mentors, John Miller of the Indianapolis Symphony and Joylyn Hague at University of Indianapolis. I hold a Bachelor™s degree in Music Performance in French Horn and a Master™s degree in Music Education from the Indiana University School of Music. At Indiana University I studied with celebrated horn players Philip Farkas and Michael Hatfield and received certification in K-12 instrumental music as well as Kodaly Method certification while continuing to study classical guitar with Joylyn Hague at University of Indianapolis and Brett Terrell at Butler University.

My first teaching job after college was with a company called Music on the Move, where I traveled once a week to 12 different private (mostly Catholic and Christian) k-8 schools and taught individual and small group lessons in brass, winds, strings, piano, and guitar, as well as general music. From there I went on to teach band and orchestra for several years at Brebeuf Preparatory School in Indianapolis. At this time I was also performing frequently with a classical guitar quartet, œThe Franklin Quartet. After 6 years of teaching at Brebeuf, I owned a tutoring service, Head of the Class Educational Services, where I traveled to students'™ homes for academic tutoring and help with home school instruction. With Head of the Class I gained a lot of valuable experience helping students with learning disabilities and worked particularly with many students struggling with Asperger™s Syndrome. During this time I worked with many home schools and gained much appreciation for the achievements and challenges that home schools face.

These days, and for quite a few years now, I focus all of my time and energy on playing classical guitar and teaching private music lessons.

Over the years of working with students of all ages and various backgrounds, my greatest strength has been building excellent relationships with my students. Experience has taught me that is the first and foremost important requirement for students' success. I have been fortunate to study with several great teachers and perform with many great musicians. It is my greatest joy in life to be able to pass that along to my students.

Our son has been taking piano lessons with Mr. Hawes for 2 years and we couldn't be happier! He is a wonderful teacher, and we have seen our son grow and learn and get excited about lessons! Mr. Hawes has patience in working with students, and I am always amazed at his knack for getting even squirrely little boys to sit still and get engaged in a lesson! Mr. Hawes is a wonderful teacher, who is passionate about his students and loves working with them, which is apparent in each lesson. We are truly blessed to have found such a wonderful teacher for our son, and would highly recommend him.

Advantages & Disadvantages of a Fretless Guitar
Fretless instruments are not uncommon in the world of music, however, a fretless guitar is an instrument that isn't often mentioned. The fretless guitar lacks the frets that one would traditionally see on a guitar. This means that there is no interruption in the string from the bridge, up the neck of the guitar. The lack of frets create an entirely unique, warm, but less amplified sound that works across all types of music. In order to truly understand what a fretless guitar is, it is first
