With 25 years experience as a concert soloist on stages around the globe, it is so important to learn from a professional. Having studied for years with soloist Erick Friedman and pedagogue Sally Thomas, lessons comprise a teaching philosophy based on the principles of Jascha Heifetz and Ivan Galamian. With any student, learning the proper solid fundamentals that will hold up onstage for auditions right through to performing chamber music and as soloist with orchestras is so important and it is also about developing an enjoyable environment to the student to grow.
Lessons (in studio or online) are tailored depending on the needs of each student’s individuality as there is something so wonderful in enabling a student to find their musical voice and allow them to have fun and experience the challenge of musical growth.

I am a professional violinist and violist. I learned to play viola when I was 13 and our school music teacher was forming a string quartet. We had many terrific violinists at the school but no violists so I volunteered to learn. It opened up many worlds and opportunities for me. I received a big scholarship because I played viola when I did my Masters Degree at Boston U. I got chances to travel abroad that were only because I played viola. So it’s a wonderful thing for students to add if they already play violin or to switch to if they prefer the deeper, darker sound. Have fun! Add opportunities to your life!

I teach music lessons starting with and building upon basic techniques-including proper hand position, reading music, counting rhythms, maintaining a steady beat, and for wind instruments-proper breathing technique, embouchure, etc. I think it is important to establish these foundations and build upon them to keep music frustration-free and joyful. I enjoy playing along with and modeling the playing of my instrument so that students can hear and strive toward producing a good sound.

Curious about ragtime piano music? Read on as music teacher James W. shares a quick introduction to the genre, and the 5 iconic pieces you should know! Ragtime piano music is characterized by its syncopated rhythm, which simply means that the accent is unexpectedly placed on the off beat, like the 2nd beat and the 4th beat in a 4/4 time rhythm. This “offbeat” style became famous at the turn of the 20th century with songs written by Scott Joplin like “The Entertainer” and “Map …
