Amber R.

Blue Bell, PA

About Amber

Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 2013
Masters of Music in Viola Performance in progress at Temple University, Philadelphia, PA 2015

Ms. R. began her studies on violin at an early age. After studying violin for 10 years, she made the switch to viola and never looked back! She performs internationally--most recently traveling to the Isle of Man for the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition as a finalist to compete in the 2013 competition (this is one of the two international competitions in the world for viola!). In July of 2014,
Ms. R. will be returning to perform at the Interharmony International Music Festival in Arcidosso, Italy. She has studied as well as performed in Shanghai, Beijing and many other cities across China. Ms. R. is currently a graduate student at Temple University in Viola Performance as well as a freelance musician and private teacher of the violin and viola. Her principle teachers include international viola soloist, Hong Mei Xiao and Kerri Ryan of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Other interests in no particular order include ancient history, philosophy, astronomy, Earth science, veganism, quantum physics, traveling, spirituality, anything interesting and following her heart always.

When we first meet, I'll ask you to play me something so I can get a feel for where you are...whether its a scale or a piece you have been playing. If you don't know anything that's fine too! My lessons are designed around you so every lesson is a different depending on the student, however, below is an example of the materials generally covered.

Example Lesson
1. Warm up (scale, open strings, or finger exercises)
Address technical issues--tone production, posture and set up, various bow exercises, intonation, etc.
2. Positions
3. Etude
4. Repertoire
5. Recap

It might sound like a lot--but don't worry I'll have a smile on my face the whole time and be working with you and encouraging you to do your best!

After 3-6 months:
Read notes (if you can't when you first come)
Count rhythms
Have a correct set up
Full tone
Developed ear
Scales
Greater finger facility
Repertoire

*** Studio Equipment ***
Stand, Metronome, Tuner, Music (but eventually you will have your own) You will need to provide your own instrument.

My preferred teaching methods are Suzuki and Sassmannshaus, Mark O'Connor Fiddle Book (violin and viola)

Recital Opportunities
Studio recitals are held biannually in December and June! They are a great chance to perform for friends and family, as well as meet the rest of the studio. You do not have to perform, but are certainly encouraged to : )
(Location varies, but usually they are held at a local church or university)

*** Specialties ***
Classical, Folk

Amber is a great Violin/Viola teacher and has been very knowledgeable and helpful! Amber hones in on where a student needs improvement in their playing and explains in a way that's easy to understand how to improve. Lessons are always fun and you can tell Amber enjoys teaching!

I've played brass instruments throughout High School and decided to attempt to teach myself the Violin after I graduated College. After almost a year of struggling I started to take lessons with Amber and she quickly helped me improved my form and technique with my left and right hand, obtain proper equipment, and provide exercises on what to practice to continue improving. I have noticed a drastic improvement since I started taking lessons with Amber and I highly recommend her as your Violin or Viola teacher!

Benjamin K.

Glenside, PA

About Benjamin

I grew up in Glenside moved to Pittsburgh for school and came back because I love it here...I've been playing for 17 years and have a smorgasbord of influences from Zeppelin to the Beatles to Phish to Radiohead to the dirty projectors to Jay Z to Kurt Rosenwinkel & John Scofield. I have been composing and working with original bands for some 11 years and play regularly in the city and up and down the east coast. I have also been teaching for the past 11 years all over the Philadelphia area. i teach from a method I derived myself from years of learning both in and out of school. I think teachin
g music is both aural as well as visual and encourage students to listen to music a lot. most of all i feel that music is fun and the students should enjoy learning so i incorporate their favorite artists and favorite songs into our studies. for serious students I love theory and love sharing what I've discovered over the years.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a very laid back guy but I take my playing seriously. music is my life and there's nothing I enjoy sharing and expressing more. I learned to love playing guitar when I was 12 from the coolest guitar teacher ever. he had a vibe that i gravitated toward and encouraged me in just the right ways to get me believing in myself. I try to encourage my students the same way. music should be fun above all and sculpt my lessons to each students individual needs so that they are better equipped to succeed.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect them to provide guitar/bass/piano

Ben was fabulous! He taught me music I wanted to play at a speed that fit for me and simplified harder songs for a beginner like me to still be able to play a song I loved! Great teacher and picks up on your strengths and weakness. I would highly recommended him as a teacher! He's also funny and would make lesson's enjoyable! He was friendly to my dog and birds as well :)

Adrienne K.

Philadelphia, PA

About Adrienne

Why and how did I get into taking harp lessons? Well, as a young girl, I remember being mystified by the harp in Fantasia and when I was in high school, my dad found a teacher. After the first lesson, I was hooked and the rest is history! My 10 years of piano study and 8 years of flute background helped me advance quickly at the harp while starting at the age of 16.

I began my higher education at Penn State University where I entered as a flute major because I was not quite at the advanced level of harp that was required at the college level. However, after playing principal harp with the P
enn State Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble, I realized harp to be my true calling and switched my major instrument. I graduated from Penn State in 2009 with a BA Music degree and concentration on harp. I stayed at Penn State for an additional year to complete a Professional Performance Certificate on the harp. This past spring, I received a Masters of Music in Harp Performance at Temple University, where I studied with the principal harpist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Elizabeth Hainen. I have been lucky to have played some of the best orchestral repertoire in some of the most amazing concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Heinz Hall, and the Kimmel Center.

I am a classically trained musician who loves playing around with pop and jazz in her spare time. My philosophy is that I will teach whichever genre will inspire the student to sit down and practice!

I consider myself to be a harpist but most importantly, a great musician. I will encourage you to become the best harpist and musician you would like to become, and l will tailor my teaching to your learning style. Whether you are taking lessons for fun or are disciplined and serious, you will be continuously improving while feeling challenged.

I promise if you start taking harp lessons with me, you'll wonder why you hadn't started sooner!

Adrriene welcomed me into her very neat, well-lit and cozy house, and into an overall comfortable atmosphere. She was very warm and patient, and took my personal musical goals in mind. (I'm not planning to become a concert harpist, but to learn to play and enjoy the 19-string celtic harp that my wife bought me as a gift, and perhaps play in church.) With this in mind, she took off with the first lesson with a song that I've been wanting to learn for a very long time, and made it into an exercise. I should now, with a two-week time gap for practice, be able to learn to correctly position my fingers and pluck the strings with a clear and crisp sound. Looking forward to my second lesson.
