About Ashlyn
Hi! I have been teaching private violin lessons for the past 8 years to beginners and adults! I am currently a freelancer in New York City, as well as working for an artist management company.

I began teaching privately after working with the Boston Youth Symphony’s Intensive Community Program. This program provides free instruction to underrepresented communities and work with the program was required of my pedagogy course at Boston University. This was my first experience teaching and I loved it! I continued to work with the program after my class ended, helping students who needed some extra time with their instruments or training in music reading and theory. I have been teaching private lessons ever since, maintaining small studios while at was at school in Chicago and Boston.

To enhance my teaching, I took the Every Child Can,
Book 1 and Book 2 courses offered through the Suzuki Association of America. These classes provided valuable new ideas and approaches to teaching that I use every day. At Belvoir Terrace I was a violin and viola teacher as well as a full time counselor, living with the students and being totally integrated into their camp lives. Additionally, I was the chairperson of the Instrumental Department, learning how to more carefully organize tasks, foster innovation, and build relationships between departments.

I am passionate about all areas of music education. This summer, I accepted an internship in the production department of Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. I had the most wonderful summer of my life, enjoying every moment of being backstage, driving artists to and from Ravinia, and working with talented young artists about to step into their careers. That summer helped me develop my skills in education and production, and my passion for changing children’s lives through music education has only grown. I have continued to see how the arts unite communities and how arts education and outreach change lives.

***Education***
I received my Master's Degree in Violin Performance from DePaul Univeristy in 2014 and a Certificate in Performance in 2016. I graduated magna cum laude from Boston University with a Bachelor's Degree in Violin Performance. If you are looking for a young, exciting teacher, I might be the perfect fit!

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach students of all ages and experience levels. Depending on the student, I use a Suzuki based method of teaching. This means that I use the Suzuki books and like to have the parent be more involved in the learning process, but I also feel it is very important to supplement the books by adding scales, etudes, and other solo repertoire. When possible, I like to have my students interact in chamber music, which is so often missing from most lessons.

I expect students to have a music stand. I bring music and a tuner and metronome.

I have been taking lessons with Ashlyn for about 7 months now and she has truly been the best violin teacher I could have hoped for! She is not only good at teaching and helping me improve my playing, but she is also a really nice person and we get along very well. I look forward to every lesson and always learn a lot and have fun. Unfortunately, I leave for college soon so I will no longer be able to take lessons with Ashlyn, I will miss her a lot.

In my studio, I believe that my role is to steer students toward a deeper understanding of themselves, their instrument, and their relationship to music. I am a classically trained cellist in NYC. I have a master's degree in cello performance from a top NYC conservatory. My teaching pulls from the Suzuki method and the great cello pedagogue Irene Sharp. I emphasize ear-training and a physically relaxed and technically accurate approach to cello playing so that students are free to create music without limitations or physical discomfort.
Though playing an instrument takes hard work, it should be a fun and e
njoyable experience too! We will work together to ensure that you or your child are learning pieces that interest you and inspire you to reach the next level. By the end of each lesson you will know what to work on for the week and exactly how to practice in order to achieve the most effective results.

Students will learn the fundamentals of music theory and history while focusing on improving their technical facility on the cello. Students also work towards building their comfort with the instrument by practicing increasingly complex exercises and repertoire. Lessons will be age appropriate, highly interactive, and geared towards your/ your child's personal goals as an aspiring cellist.

Laura is a wonderful cello teacher. Our daughter (10 y.o.) has been playing cello for 2 years. We just moved to NYC and needed a cello teacher. We found Laura and our daughter just had her first lesson with Laura. They reviewed skills, practiced pieces, ear training and Laura provided appropriate level workbooks at the end for home practice. Our daughter said "I can't wait to work with Laura again next week." Proof enough for us.

I - Silent Foundation

The silent foundation refers to the condition of your instrument as it is silent. If we are looking at the body as an instrument that sings, we first have to make sure that our instrument is in good condition. How healthy is your instrument? Is it well rested, well hydrated and loose? Or is it tired, dehydrated and tense? As you could guess, the condition of your instrument will have a significant impact on the quality of the sounds you make. So the first thing to be addressed is how your instrument is before it starts making sound.

II - Conditioning of Singing Behaviors

This is when we get busy. Once we have a well rested, healthy, hydrated and relaxed instrument we can start working it out. The goal is to condition our singing behaviors to be reflexive, reliable and strong. The way to do this is through a series of vocal exercises that will condition your voice to respond to the desires of your heart. Whatever it is that you want to express will be possible once your instrument is conditioned to the point where there is no gap between what you want to express and your ability to do so. Learning to sing is all about learning how to express yourself without barriers. You should be able to develop enough range, power, control and skill so that you can express your heart without feeling like you'™re incapable of achieving what you pursue. To achieve these abilities training is often necessary.

LESSON DETAILS

Whether you are a parent looking for instruction for your child, or for yourself, Rachel can customize the right program that best suits your needs. Her students come from all walks of life and have different goals, but they all have one thing in common. They love performing and have the desire to be the best at their chosen craft (singing/acting).

Some students want to sing/act for themselves, others want to sing/act for a hobby, and others want to be professional performers. That's where Rachel comes in. No matter what your goals are, she can help. Rachel teaches her students how to become true artists without tearing them down and without taking away the part of them that makes them unique. She teaches healthy technique that is based off of the human anatomy; the science of how the body/mind works and how the body/mind can work as efficiently as possible while singing or acting.

Learning how to sing/act is a process and doesn't happen overnight. Rachel's ultimate goal as a teacher is to not only make her students the best performers and singers they can be, but also give them all of the proper tools they need to have a more productive mind frame and become self-sufficient. Of course this can take years to master. It takes time and dedication.

OTHER LESSON INFORMATION

SINGING: Bel Canto singing technique for the modern singer is taught in private and group classes. No one sounds like old opera singers, even if the student wants to sing opera. Students are allowed to choose most of the material they learn in the lesson. There will be times when Rachel will suggest a song to a student but if the student doesn't enjoy the song, they will work as a team to find a song that does work for the student. Gain a better tone quality, complete control of your voice, bigger range, more flexibility, and confidence. Learn healthy voice technique, how to fully take care of your own voice so you can sing for the rest of your life (even after lessons), and become a self sufficient performer for life.

ACTING: Stella Adler, Stanislavsky, Chekhov, and Meisner Acting Technique for Theatre/Camera is taught in private and group classes. All students are exposed to each technique and Rachel sees which technique each student responds to the most. Once the student and Rachel are able to identify the technique, Rachel continues to use the terminology of that technique for the remainder of the time the student is in lessons. Students eventually are able to play roles truthfully and realistically, even if the roles are opposite of the student's own personality.

BY THE TIME STUDENTS GRADUATE FROM LESSONS:

1. Gain a lifelong, solid, consistent, and healthy technique that they can always count on in practice and performance.

2. Gain specific technical and personal notes in a notebook and/or computer file that is organized and always accessible for review.

3. Gain artistry, performance skills, and a strong voice that will look/sound authentic; Singers will sound appropriate to whatever style of music they are singing. (No fake sound or look.) Actors will just be in the moment and truthful whether they are on stage or in front of the camera.

4. Gain the confidence to always put on a great performance.

5. Gain focus and a more productive mind frame.

6. Become self-sufficient by knowing how to assess a problem and then fix it without creating a new issue.

STUDIO POLICIES-

CANCELLATION:
24 hour lesson cancellation

MISSED LESSONS/MAKE UPS:
If the student needs to miss a lesson for sickness, they or their parent/ guardian, if the student is under 18, must let Rachel know at least 24 hours before their missed lesson. If they need to miss due to an other activity or vacation, they must contact Rachel at least a week from their next scheduled lesson in advance to prevent from forfeiting the lesson. All make ups will be scheduled within 4 weeks from the missed lesson. If rescheduled lesson or make up lesson is missed, no new make up will be given unless Rachel is not able to teach for some rare reason.

LATENESS:
If a student is going to be late they need to contact Rachel as soon as possible, to let her know they will be late. Lessons will end on time unless she is able to extend the lesson due to a late student or her schedule allows for it though please understand, Rachel would be extending a courtesy and would not be obligated to do so. If on the rare occasion Rachel is running late, she will always make up the time.

SITTING IN: Parents/Guardians are ONLY permitted to stay for the first lesson and are NOT permitted to sit in for any other lesson/class unless invited. This is to promote good/strong teacher-student relationship quickly and easily. Also, many times students feel more comfortable when their parents/guardians leave.

Overall, very impressed. She is direct and doesn't tell you something you want to hear. Her evaluation process is well rounded and planned. She puts together a great curriculum to know what to expect in the coming lessons. Very easy going person and makes you feel completely comfortable at the initial lessons.

Dennis has been actively making music since the age of 9, when he first picked up a viola and joined his grade school orchestra. He began singing at the age of 12, and composed his first work at 14. He received an M.A. in Music from City College of New York, where he studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici.

I am an opera singer and private music instructor in New York City.

I cater my lessons to my students’ individual goals, firmly believing that a strong framework in classical technique can support any style of music. I love watching my students become passionate about music, achieve their goals, and reach their greatest potential as musicians. Using my experience and flexibility, I create a learning environment that is both engaging and fun.

I developed a passion for music at a young age and have been studying piano for 18 years. I received my BA in Language and Culture with a double minor in Vocal/Opera Performance and Italian, as well as my MA in Vocal Performance. While earning my MA, I coached voice, piano, and language diction to the undergraduate and masters students.

Ross is a great teacher! I studied with him to improve my very basic piano skills and in about 3 months, under Ross' guidance, I was playing better than ever. He is a very clear, patient, and enthusiastic instructor, and I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking to learn or improve their piano skills.

I am a Brooklyn boy whose life has revolved around music from the start. First I sang. I still sing. As a child I taught myself the recorder, accordion, guitar & piano. I performed on all except the accordion. I attended a Music & Art HS focusing on flute & piano. I have a BA, MM & in 2004 was awarded a Doctorate in Flute Performance from the University of Washington, Seattle. Currently, I study piano with Edna Golandsky, the founder of The Golandsky Institute. She teaches the Taubman Technique developed by her teacher, Dorothy Taubman. This method teaches the movements that lie beneath a virtuoso technique while protecting the student/performer from the injuries commonly suffered by so many pianists. I teach this technique. For me, teaching the piano and flute; teaching Music is not work. For me, it has been a way of life. I love what I

Tony is a fantastic and engaging teacher who has been teaching my 10 year old son piano for several years now at The Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. His enthusiasm is contagious and we are so grateful to know him as a teacher and an all-around great person!

Tony has been my son's flute teacher since February. He treats children with respect and honesty, which is transpatent. He inspires them with his own beautiful sound on flute or piano while playing duets, but doesn't overly challenge or intimidate them.
We're all happy with the progress we hear and even more pleased that daily practice, though still requiring some parental support, continues to be pleasant and comfortable for my son.
We truly appreciate Tony's humor as well as his warmth. We're so fortunate to have found him.

I first met Tony over a decade ago when I was around 12. From the time I was in middle school, Tony has been kind, caring, attentive, and enthusiastic. He treats his students of all ages with respect and pushes them to be their best. Tony is a teacher in the truest sense of the word - he truly loves his students and this music, and instills that sense of wonder into every lesson. He cares about his students beyond their musical interests and takes the time to forge a true connection with them individually. I cannot say enough about the type of musician, teacher, and human being Tony is, and would highly recommend him for students of all ages.

John Kun Park is a recent graduate of the Mannes School of Music. He completed studies in Operatic Performance at SUNY Purchase. John will be joining the Sarasota Opera's Apprentice Artist program in the beginning of 2018.

The 2016-17 season found John in his final year of Artist Certification at the Mannes School. He was the tenor soloist in Händel's Messiah in Manhasset, NY, and then appeared as Anatol with Mannes Opera in their Spring production of Barber's Vanessa. He placed as one of six finalists for the New Jersey State Opera's Alfredo Silipigni competition shortly thereafter. John was invited to Central City Opera as an Apprentice Artist for their esteemed Bonfils-Stanton Young Artist Program. He was cast as the cover of Don José for the season of Bizet's Carmen, and debuted as Don José for the company's Apprentice produc
tion.

The summer of 2016 found John in the Dolomites of Italy, appearing as Don José in Bizet's Carmen under Music Academy International's affiliation of the Trentino Music Festival, under the baton of Christopher Larkin and direction of David Gately. He appeared a finalist in New York's Joy of Singing competition in the Spring of 2016, and was hired to cover Don José for Venture Opera's winter production of Carmen.

During his time at SUNY Purchase, John appeared as Le Prince Charmant in Massenet's Cendrillon, Eisenstein in J. Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and Lysander in Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His studies while in Los Angeles found John appearing as Des Grieux in Massenet's Manon, and B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini's Madama Butterfly under the Opera Gang company.
