WORKSHOP FOR LEARNING TO SING
COMPETENCY: A SOLID FOUNDATION IN THE BASICS OF SINGING
OBJECTIVE: Students will learn Basic Components of Singing and demonstrate via public (by choice) performance; at the end of course.
Pitch
Rhythm
Breath
Voice
Diction
Pitch
The use of pitch in language to distinguish words. All languages use intonation to express emphasis, contrast, emotion, or other such nuances.
Pitch refers to the notes and sounds that we hear when someone sings, and it determines if the song is going to sound great or not. The singer will have to hit various pitches in a song with a relative amount of accuracy in order to be in tune with the overall music accompaniment and harmonies.
RHYTHM
Every song has a certain beat, and it is essential that we keep to the basic rhythm of the song, or else we might find that we are constantly trying to catch up with the lyrics or always lagging behind. Rhythm also determines the groove of the song, and this is what gets us on our feet and dancing when we listen to upbeat or fast tempo songs.
A great sense of rhythm begins with learning to recognize various beat duration, to vocalize notes with different beats, as well as to be able to keep to the basic tempo of a song.
BREATH CONTROL
Breathing is an essential component of singing, and is what most singing instructors would introduce to students during their first lesson for singing. It is also what most people would want to learn about and also ask questions about.
Breathing is a natural process, and it is not difficult to achieve better breath control for singing. A great breath foundation is needed for singing!
VOICE
To produce great sounds when singing it is essential to adopt beneficial singing habits in order to produce sounds that are more relaxed and healthy.
DICTION
Learning how to produce sound with our voice is not enough. We still need to shape our voice, and form words in a language that our audience will understand.
This is why diction is also one of the vital basics of singing, because it determines whether our audience understands what we are singing, and whether we are able to connect with them through our song. Diction is also a key factor towards hitting the correct pitches, especially for the high notes, and this will be explained in detail.

COURSE OUTLINE:
Lesson 1 PITCH
How to avoid the most common singing mistakes that prevent singers from producing a clean and professional vocal tone.
Objective: Students will learn warm up exercises that strengthen vocal cords and loosen the muscles needed to produce a professional sound./ the importance of singing ‘scales’ to achieve this objective.
Lesson 2 RHYTHM
Rhythms often used in various standard songs.
Objective: Students will listen and learn to identify rhythms used in songs. CD player provided.
Students will learn to tap out the various types of rhythm.
Students will sing a favorite song; using rhythms learned in class.
Lesson 3 BREATH
For the purpose of voice projection, students will learn to breath more from the diaphragm, the muscles beneath the ribcage, as well as the abdominal muscles.
Objective: Students will learn vital techniques to create a connected voice blending head, chest and diaphragm.
Lesson 5 DICTION
How to use the emotions, enunciation and clarity.
Objective: Students will learn to sing a favorite song with focus on elements of singing.
Lesson 6 Review of previous 5 lessons.
Lesson 7 Group/Individual Performances
Objective: Students will show confidence in employing elements from training.
Lessons 8/9/10 Rehearsal for recital TBA

I have been teaching voice for about 5 years now, and am an active performer myself in music theatre and opera. In lessons I work with my students on singing without counterproductive tension and learning to use their breath to support the sound in a way that’s healthy and will keep them singing their whole lives. I create a safe, supportive atmosphere where the student is comfortable to experiment, because I know from experience that is how real learning and expression happens. My performing experience and education allow me to also coach my students in musicality, style, and diction as well so they have all the tools to be elegant, communicative singers. I not only help the students understand what’s going on physically with their body and their instrument, but also give them ideas for ways to practice what they’re learning so they can be their own best teacher in between lessons. Singing and playing piano have always been a huge part of my life. I love to perform everything from opera and sacred music to music theater and jazz, and have been performing since I was very young. I earned my Bachelor’s of Music in vocal performance from DePaul University School of Music in Chicago. It was there that I fell in love with teaching, when I taught my first student as part of a course in vocal pedagogy. Since then I have built my studio to over 20 voice and piano students here in NY and CT. It has been thrilling to see all the progress they've made! I just completed my Masters of Music at the Conservatory of Music at Brooklyn College.

I have had several excellent and truly inspiring teachers myself with different teaching styles, and so I have a variety of approaches to drawn upon in helping my own students. Vocal techni
que was not something that came easy for me, and was something I had to really work on. This work on technique has made me a stronger teacher. I know how many different approaches it can take to make something click, so I use the diverse experiences of my own studies to find what works best for each student. While I am classically trained, I am comfortable teaching all types of singers, because I believe that at its core, what makes a singer great is the same between all genres. My number one goal in teaching is to help my students use their voice in a way that is healthy and allows them the greatest ability for expression, because ultimately, I believe that is what music is about.

Although singing has been a big part of my professional work in the past few years, I have also been playing classical piano since I was four and still love to play and share this love with my students. Most of my students are piano students, and I love seeing the progress they've made over the years. Students that started with me as beginners a few years ago are now reading music with confidence and playing works by Mozart and Beethoven.

I am an active performer and am able to draw upon this experience in my teaching. This summer I performed in Manhattan with dell'Arte Opera Ensemble and won 2nd prize in their dell'Arte/Jeiven Awards. Past roles include Gretel in Hansel and Gretel at Brooklyn College and Zerlina in Mozart's Don Giovanni with Connecticut Lyric Opera. Other roles include April in Company with Westport Community Theatre, Despina (cover) in Mozart's Così fan tutte for Connecticut Lyric Opera, the messenger in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo at DePaul University, and Maria in West Side Story with the McLeod Summer Playhouse. I have a special love for early music and have performed oratorio by Bach with the DePaul Baroque Ensemble and as part of the Bethesda Music Series in New Haven. I also participated in the prestigious Amherst Early Music Festival for two years. I have performed abroad in Austria and Italy, and speak French, Italian, and some German. Because of my experience on stage in opera , music theatre, and recitals, I understand the skills it takes to engage an audience and create a well-rounded performance. I am thus an asset to any student preparing for a contest, audition, or stage appearance.

I have been singing since I was 3, anything and everything from Michael Jackson to Elvis Presley to Luciano Pavarotti. Originally from Colorado, I studied music/theatre, as well as vocal pedagogy at The University of Colorado at Boulder, where I graduated with highest honors. I made my Broadway debut in "The Phantom of the Opera" at age 24. I also performed in "Chess in concert" as a featured rock tenor soloist at the New Amsterdam Theatre on Broadway with Josh Groban. I have understudied and performed lead roles in the first AEA National Tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s "Whistle Down the Wind." Regionally, I have played many lead roles all over the United States in productions including "Les Miserables," "Miss Saigon," "The Wild Party," and "She Loves Me."

As an ASCAP recording artist, currently I am working in the studio with a full production team on my first pop/rock album. I also often sing on demos for producers and write songs for other artists in many different genres.

As a TV/Film actor, most recently I was on set with Marvel's TIARA 2 on Netflix. I have booked lead roles in 4 SAG-AFTRA short films, as well as the comedic lead in a SAG-AFTRA Web-series. A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. Playing music is demanding, and can be an amazing experience, so my main approach in teaching is to keep it fun, and keep it focused. For the past 16 years, I’ve developed my own style, teaching hundreds of students from age 5 to 75, in most types of music. The early lessons are for starting to learn basic techniques and music theory. We can also begin to play your favorite songs and musical styles. Eventually, lessons will often begin with me asking “What are we working on today!?” and the student will bring me their work and questions. We laugh a lot, work really hard, and make some great music!

Having grown up with a father who ran a guitar shop and a professional singer for a mother, music was just another language to communicate with in our house. Learning to speak through music taught me how to focus and develop new skills, which helped me in school with everything that I have ever had to learn.

In 5th grade I started playing bass guitar at home, trombone in the school music program, and private lessons for piano. This exposed me to a wide range of music very early on.

When I was a teenager, I was the youngest person to study at Victor Wooten's first bass/nature camp in 2000, a week long master class with some of the world's most decorated musicians in Montgomery Bell State Park outside of Nashville. I played in local bands in the Berkshires, wrote music for Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, and sang such roles as Val
jean in Les Miserables and John Wilkes Booth in Assassins, as well played in orchestras across the county. I performed as both a bass player and a vocalist in the Massachusetts All-State Jazz Ensemble at Symphony Hall in Boston.

I moved to New York to get a degree in Theater as a singer and actor in 2004. Since then I've been fortunate enough to work in NY orchestras, cabarets, theater and national TV, tour the world with a variety of musical artists, work as a studio musician recording albums for songwriters, and develop musical education programs. Most recently I curated and taught the bass guitar curriculum for Yousician, a Helsinki-based music app with 25 million users in 154 countries worldwide. That has been an invaluable experience, working alongside educators and programmers in one of the world's leading countries in both education and technology.

Music has been a life-directing guide for me; from the wonder of discovery to the mastery of new and exciting techniques, music has always been a sort of way for us to communicate intimately, yet on a universal scale. To pass the same experience on to others is such a gift, and one I value greatly.

Alex is an excellent teacher who has helped me to understand not only where I can make improvements, but also given me a wide range of techniques I can use to do so. His knowledge of breathing techniques is particularly impressive, as his understanding of the impact of nerves and anxiety on the vocal. Alex's teaching style enables him to convey everything from the simple to complicated in an easily understandable, highly effective and very friendly way. I have only had a few lessons with Alex, but have made huge strides already. Very highly recommended!

I have truly enjoyed my guitar lessons with Alex. After only a handful of sessions with Alex I have been able to dramatically improve my guitar skills including both my technical approach as well as my music theory knowledge. About Haley
Thank you so much for taking the time to look through my profile! When I teach lessons I like to take the time to get to know my students and the way that they learn individually. Because everybody learns in a slightly different way no two lessons will be taught exactly the same. However, there are some basics that I like to bring up with everybody which are:

1 - How do you easily and confidently read music?

2- What are some good techniques for practicing on your own?

3- How are you producing the sound that comes out?

4- What is the emotion behind each note that you sing?

5- Have fun!

On that note, here is a little bit about myself. I've been studying voice for 16 years under the direction of some amazing voice teachers. I have recently traveled to Italy and worked intensely for two months with some of the worlds
greatest singers and coaches on Italian operatic scenes, arias, and art songs. Another fun fact or two about myself, I worked for Walt Disney World Entertainment for 3 months for the Disney College Program after my first year of college. Also, in the summer of 2013 I sang in the choir for The Rolling Stones 50 and Counting Tour in the song "You Can't Always Get What You Want." It was the experience of a lifetime!

I hope that we can have a great and productive time learning to sing together! Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions you may have!

I am trained and have performance experience in opera, however, I also have performance experience in jazz and musical theater. I am not trained in the latter two, however, if you do have questions about them feel free to bring a piece to look at.

For Haley being my very first private voice instructor, I couldn't have asked for a better person to start with! She helped me discover things about my voice that I never had access to before. She brought confidence in my singing that I never really had, all while being the sweetest person in the world. She definately knows what she's doing, and is very good at finding what's best for her students. Her best interest is always there for her students and their wellbeing. About Angela
I am a professional opera singer and voice instructor in New York City. I have an opera, musical theater, church and choral background. I am comfortable teaching all styles of music.

Our singing voice is the instrument that we were each born to play. My goal is to make singing effortless and enjoyable and to help my students build confidence in themselves by developing their instrument.

Together we will work on breathing, speaking and vocal exercises as well as appropriate repertoire singing with beautiful Italian vowels, free of tension and with emphasis on emotional purpose.

Candice was an awesome voice instructor! She helped me understand the craft better and was great at helping me choose songs for recitals, too. She challenged me but also knew what I could and could not handle. She also listened well and followed the style I liked. I definitely became a better singer because of her, and still use of some of her warm ups today when I get opportunities to sing. I miss having her around in Pittsburgh!
