I have been singing with barbershop quartets, classical choral groups, and contemporary a cappella groups for four decades. I teach the classical approach to the voice, which can be adapted to any style of singing you choose.

About Thomas
Thomas J. W. is an active music teacher, composer, adjudicator, and clinician in the greater Philadelphia area. He has over fifteen years experience as a concert band director, marching band director, jazz improvisation instructor, choral director, private instructor, and marching drill writer. His directing career has included small rural band programs, small metro programs, large high-achieving suburban programs, and non-profit youth bands. In addition to his band compositions, he also has over forty unpublished vocal arrangements to his credit, most written for use with collegiate men's a cappella groups. Thomas taught over 600 online and local private music lessons in 2016.

Thomas has a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a teaching certificate in the states of Pennsylvania
and New Jersey and has taught at the secondary level in both states. In addition to both instrumental and choral ensembles at Penn State, Thomas was a student leader in the Penn State Blue Band and a member of the brass section of the Cadets of Bergen County Drum and Bugle Corps in 1993 and 1994. He served as an Associate Director of the Warren Junior Military Band of Youngstown, Ohio from 1995 to 2005. He also served as a visual staff member for the renowned North Penn Marching Knights of Lansdale, PA for one season in 2004.

He is a current adjudicator with Drum Corps International and Cavalcade of Bands. He is a member of MENC, PMEA, NJMEA, ASCAP, CASA, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Band Association. He appeared in the Marquis Who's Who Among American Educators in 2004 and 2005, an honor rarely bestowed upon teachers, as students who appear in the Who's Who Among American High School Students must nominate them. He currently is a music teacher at the Center for Performing and Fine Arts of the PA Leadership Charter School in West Chester, PA and resides in Downingtown, PA with his wife and two sons.

Thomas will happily work with students on the autism spectrum or students with ADD.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are tailored to the needs and interests of each student. If a student is involved in school music ensembles, we will work with their lesson books from school in addition to material outside of the books, including SmartMusic, Noteflight, and teacher-created materials. We will focus on building proper tone production and individual technique - something that often is difficult to learn in a large ensemble setting.

I am capable of starting a beginner student on any band instrument including percussion, any classical string instrument (violin, viola, cello, string bass), and piano. I can begin a student on drum set and work with them through their first method book, but I would then recommend they find a specialized drum set teacher after a period of six to twelve months.

For advanced students, I work from selected conservatory etude books on developing advanced skills and can work with students on audition pieces for honors bands/orchestras or college auditions.

My lessons are a half-hour once a week, with the option of working for 45 minutes or 60 minutes.

*** Specialties ***
music, band, orchestra, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, euphonium, tuba, violin, viola, cello, string bass, piano, Percussion

When I first begin teaching a student, I tell them that everyone has the ability to sing well no matter his or her experience. I also tell them that there are four things that a good singer must have: breathe control (air is your fuel, and must be used efficiently and effectively to give you the best sound), posture (in order to have access to your air and prevent vocal damage you must practice good posture habits), diction (how you pronounce words when singing can impede or improve vocal tone, as well as help or hinder the audience in understanding the lyrics) and finally and most importantly, passion. Passion is how emotionally connected you are to music and is what really allows the singer to connect with his or her audience.

About Rosalind

-weekly instructional videos for voice sent

-weekly links to articles about music and the brain

-I respond to student concerns and questions within 24 hours

I welcome students of all ages and work hard to make music accessible for everyone.

-Young kids in voice can expect their lessons to be fun and educational including using visual tools like scarves and shakers, and imaginative play to learn vocal techniques needed to sing on pitch and with proper breathe control.

-Children in piano lessons will learn music theory and piano technique through simple songwriting exercises, theory games, visual tools and more. They will learn about composer's lives and musical styles, providing them with a well-rounded lesson experience.

-Older children and adult singers can expect to learn about their vocal anatomy in order to better control of their voice and become independent during practice sessions at home. They will learn how to improve breathe control, posture and diction. Time during lessons will also be dedicated to developing stage presence and discussing vocal health. Singers will be allowed to select repertoire from the genre of their choice. They can also learn how to harmonize and sight-sing in lessons if they would like.

They will be provided with honest feedback and constructive help on their compositions. They will learn how the human brain processes music and how best to capitalize upon this process for the greatest audience appeal.

About me!

I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I also have my master's degree in music therapy from Drexel University. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist. During my time at school I performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center, and did music therapy work with older adults, as well as disadvantaged children and parents.

I also have my own parent/child music class I host every Thursday September-May. It's never to early to start a music education!

I have been teaching for over four years and now have a studio of more than 70 happy students. Teaching music is my passion, and I love seeing students grow!

I often draw upon my experience from my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development.  My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.

I have been teaching for the past 8 years and am passionate about healthy, comfortable singing. My lessons are structured to include vocal warmups/technique exercises, sight singing to strengthen musicianship, and then the working of repertoire. I will have suggestions for repertoire, but also am happy to work on anything the student may be interested in.

About Charlea Lyn
Hello! My name is Charlea Lyn, and I want to begin by thanking you for taking a look at my profile. It has always been one of my firm beliefs that anyone can sing as singing can be defined by “uttering words or sounds in succession with musical modulations of the voice.” Therefore, with this mentality in mind I feel as though it is not a job, but more a privilege to be able to teach people to sing.

My parents say I started singing before I could talk, however, I seriously started taking lessons when I was 14. Over the course of my lessons, I fell in love with opera, and decided that was what I wanted to pursue as a career path. That decision led me to SUNY Fredonia, where I received my BM in Music Education and Vocal Performance, and later to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where I received my MM in Vocal Performance in May
'13 under the tutelage of Catherine Cook.

One of the most important things that I have learned thus far, is that singing is a truly expressive art form that requires hard work, diligence, and commitment. It is my goal to bring each of my students the farthest I can in healthily developing their technique as well as work on the emotional portrayal and fundamental building blocks of music. Although I teach each student specific to his or her individual needs and desires, my lessons usually consist of three parts - technique exercises, sight singing, and repertoire. Furthermore, other things that stay consistent are a comfortable and safe environment for the student, my undivided attention, all the information that I have to share with others, and most importantly FUN!

Although it is my personal decision to pursue opera and classical music, I have experience in musical theatre and am comfortable teaching a variety of genres. I truly believe that although each genre is different, the foundation and principles of healthy singing are the same.

Not every teacher is right for every student. However, I do my best to give all my students lessons in a comfortable and productive learning environment. I hope that you will take the next step of your path towards healthy and beautiful vocal production with me. Thank you for your time and consideration and I hope to hear from you soon!

I had a great first lesson with Charlea. She's an excellent teacher who focuses on her students' particular needs and moves at an appropriate pace. The lesson was all work and no filler, and I already made more progress than I had with hours of prior lessons and self-directed research.

Five years ago, my daughter at the age of 12 showed interest in classical singing. We were so lucky to find Charlea to hold her hand, give her introduction to classical singing, and through out the next 3 years, my daughter took weekly lessons with Charlea. With Charlea's help and guidance, my daughter was able to shine in her classes and secured many solo performances throughout high school.

Charlea is a wonderful educator, beautiful singer and she has a gentle soul.

As a classically trained opera singer, I know all about the challenges that come with learning how to sing. As a voice teacher, I value the student/teacher rapport--there must be a mutual trust between us that will allow for a safe environment where asking questions and taking risks is encouraged! I combine high expectations for my students while also supporting them with positive and helpful feedback. I want to make the most of our time together, which means efficiency and consistency.

About Leah
Hi there! I have been teaching for about seven years now in San Francisco, New York City and Philadelphia. Below my bio, you can find some reviews that I've received from some of my students in NYC.

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, graduated from NYU in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music degree in vocal performance, and received my Master of Music degree in classical voice at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where I sang in operas, concerts and recitals weekly. While I was living in SF and NYC, I maintained a private studio of voice students. I love teaching as much as I love performing, so being able to do both is wonderful!
I believe that technique IS expression--a singer must have solid technique in order to express with ease, freedom and artistry. My focus as a teacher is not only on developing a healthy and dependable
technique, but also on finding the inner strength and confidence that it takes to be a singer. I am understanding of, and sympathetic towards students from all different backgrounds and experience levels. My students and I work to create a unique set of goals, and we map out how we get there TOGETHER.

I have experience teaching adults, young adults and children, in pop, musical theater and classical/operatic genres. All of my teaching experience has been in private studio settings.

Here are some of my reviews

"Had my first lesson with Leah and can't wait for my second! I've never had voice lessons before and was nervous and super self-conscious but she was so nice and we jumped right into the lesson." -Tracy D.

"Great teacher. Explains things in a way it's easy to understand. She made me feel very comfortable on the first day and was very attentive to what my goals were." -Christine S.

"Leah listens to a specific need of mine and points me in the right direction to achieve that goal. She also has a wide range of vocal skills and knowledge, so she can pretty much help you tackle any vocal challenge you have." -Eirene Z.

"Leah has a very good personality and makes me feel so comfortable during our classes! I can improve my vocal skills in a very friendly atmosphere knowing she will help me with all my questions." -Yulia S.

"Leah is an awesome and enthusiastic voice teacher and person. She creates a laid back environment and structures the lessons around your individual style and goals. Additionally, she is flexible and works with you to make sure you're able to have a lesson each week. I highly recommend taking lessons with Leah ! :)" --Brandon L.

I I believe that music is the most powerful tool in connecting and communicating across diverse cultures and creating an atmosphere where everyone feels accepted and appreciated. Whether you want to focus on music theory, technique, warm-ups, expanding your repertoire, or all of the above--please shoot me a message to see if we'd be a great fit!

About Marie
I graduated from Temple University with a degree in jazz voice! I believe anyone and everyone who can talk has the ability to sing. I love seeing progress in my students from week to week as they foster their musical ability through the use of proper technique! I'm a natural-born teacher and very patient with all ages. I've lived in Philadelphia for 6 years; I'm originally from Massachusetts and moved here for school. I began taking classical piano lessons when I was 4 years old and trained with fantastic teachers for over a decade. I toured Europe for 5 weeks with a national honors choir (Sound of America) when I was 18. I have also studied with numerous opera and jazz vocal professors during my time at Temple University. All of these different experiences have helped me foster a love for music that I would love to share.
