Awarded 6A All-State Tenor Trombonist 2014 from Texas Music Educators Association -
Teaches Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Teaching Locations:

I have been gigging, both classically and in jazz, in the greater DFW Metroplex for about 9 years. I attended high school close by, and I am the only two-time 6A All-State tenor trombonist in my city's history. I have completed two years at the University of North Texas, and have been teaching for approximately two years. I consistently double between tenor & bass trombone, having a great deal of experience in both instruments, in both classical and jazz settings. Outside of trombone, I also play trumpet/cornet, tuba, vocals, guitar, bass, and piano. I am an avid rock/metal listener, and compose my own music, mainly fusing metal and jazz. Because of this, I feel this makes me an extremely diverse instrumentalist. I have studied with such influential figures as Tony Baker (UNT, Dallas Opera Orchestra), Steve Menard (UNT, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra), Dennis Bubert (UT Arlington, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra), and more.
About Daniel
Daniel began playing music in 6th grade. His dad is a guitarist/vocalist/flautist (he gigs in the south DFW area) and brought him up in a very musical household. Since then, Daniel has played with groups such as Scott & Steve, Big Gus & Swampadelic, the Pecos River Brass Big Band, and the Fort Wor

I am a composer at heart, and a longtime music theory nerd. I have composed pieces for solo piano, rock bands, electronic music productions, piano trios, and even symphony orchestras. My love of music theory began in my teenage years when I wanted to investigate what it was about certain pieces of music that were so unexpectedly beautiful and emotionally compelling. I now have a solid grasp on the harmonic and formal structures that underlie classical, jazz, pop, and rock music, and this is the knowledge I will pass along to you to help you write music that is compelling and meaningful.
We will take a look at the music that has moved you in the past in order to give you a harmonic vocabulary, and we will also look at some music you haven't heard before as a way of stretching your awareness.
We can also discuss the psychological roadblocks people often run into when they compose, and discuss how the creative process works.
I would love having you as a student, so I hope you'll

I have been receiving lessons from Kyle for several months now and I am very impressed with his musical knowledge and his professionalism. Under his instruction, I have made gray progress on the guitar and my understanding of musical theory. Kyle is a very friendly and patient teacher as well. Highly recommended!"

About a year ago, actually 13 months, I began voice training with Daniel Kotval. This is not my first go-round with voice training. During the twenty-or-so years I was studying and performing as a dancer I also studied voiceâ¦on and off. All told, I worked with five instructors who used a wide variety of teaching styles and techniques but I never felt that any of them gave me any really useful tools. I never felt that any of them truly taught me how to use my voice properly, to achieve the best results and avoid injury.
That was many years ago. In the interim, Iâve done plenty of singing â mostly for my own entertainment â but thereâs been little improvement in the quality of my voice. Iâm not certain what it was that made me suddenly decide it was time to work with a professional voice coach but decide, I did.
Once Iâd discovered TakeLessons.com (the top result of my Google search for voice lessons in my zip code), Daniel was the obvious choice. We share Columbia College Chicago as an alma mater, and when I saw that heâd been on the faculty that was all the credentials I needed to seeâ¦and I was not wrong.
In addition to teaching the mechanics of proper breathing, posture and of course singing, Daniel places strong emphasis on music theory. Youâd be amazed at how helpful it is to understand the theories behind everything; it makes all the knowledge crystalize so much faster!
As a teacher, Daniel is endlessly patient and supportive, always inspiring me to push ahead even when I feel frustrated. His teaching techniques work well for any student of any age at any level of experience, from rank beginner to accomplished professional, and voice training is not all that Daniel does. He teaches piano, guitar and bass, percussion and brass, and much more. A few months ago, we added piano to my curriculum. Iâve learned more from him in one year than I learned from five instructors over a period of many years, combined.
So far as Iâm concerned itâs a winning combination: voice, piano, music theory, and Maestro Daniel Kotval."

How can you ensure you're making the most of your time in your singing lessons? Record yourself singing, so you can listen back on it later! Consider this advice from Hayward, CA teacher Molly R... Back when I first started voice lessons, my teacher always made sure before we got started that I brought my tape (this was the early '90s!) so that I could record the lesson. As both a student and a teacher, I certainly know the value in recording your voice lessons. When you record your …
