I have a degree in music with a teaching certificate. I have been teaching cello privately for 10 years. Depending on the age of the child we will start with either Essential Elements or Suzuki cello book one. They will start with proper positioning and plucking. Once they have 8 notes down, we start bowing. As we progress, we will be doing scales, and etudes.

About Chris

I have been teaching private violin for over 20 years, and private viola/cello for about 10. I have taught in Charles and St. Mary's County Public schools. If you’re looking for a dedicated, knowledgeable and patient strings teacher, you will love Mrs. Heins. Both of my sons have been taking lessons from Mrs. Heins for several years (one for viola and one for cello). They have learned so much under her instruction, such as earning All-County and All-State honors. They also practice their live performance skills twice a year during informal musical concerts. Mrs. Heins also offers participation in the Royal Conservatory Music Development program, which can earn your child credit for college. She is a gem and should you choose her, you won’t be disappointed.

The main thing that I like to remind students of, when they take lessons with me, is that music is FUN! A lot of hard work goes into it, but the end result is always rewarding! I am a pretty laid back teacher, yet I still work to inspire my students to try their hardest and to be the best that they can be at what they do. It is very important to me that my students get their musical wants AND needs fulfilled.

In my singing lessons we will work on a variety of topics, including:

-Gaining a feel and command for your own instrument.

-Finding your SOUND: Making sure that you are singing the right music for your vocal style and also that connects directly to you, the vocalist.

-EXERCISES: Breathing and vocalization that will lessen fatigue and enhance the strength, endurance, and quality of your voice.

-Music Theory and Ear-Training

-Building your repertoire, which is necessary for performance.

-Arranging and Communication with your accompanying musicians or band.

I have loved music as long as I can remember. I know its cliche© to say so, but it's true! :) For me, having parents of different ethnicity and siblings that were much older than me, I was heavily impacted by the wide variety of music to which my family members listened. The force of this crayon

"Tom is an amazing music instructor! My review won’t even scratch the surface of explaining what a fantastic teacher he is! Tom has taught our 4 children since 2008 when they started at School of Rock (SOR). When Tom left SOR and started giving private lessons, we left SOR because we saw the value Tom gave our children. He does a great job of challenging his students, yet keeping it interesting for them. (He's still teaching our kids after 6 years; they never get bored with his lessons and look forward to them every week!) Tom also does a fantastic job of blending music theory into everything he teaches. Our oldest child has a passion for music, and is now studying music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Tom played a huge part in our son getting into Berklee and giving him the skills he needs to succeed while there. I recommend Tom to any level of student. He is simply the best!"

This, in my opinion, is the most important quality of all teachers. 8 Essential Piano Chords Every Pianist Needs to Know

Once you've memorized the notes on the piano, it's time to put them together to create piano chords! Here, Augustine, FL piano teacher Heather L. reviews the eight chords to master first...    Except for most minimalist or avant-garde of styles, every musical genre is based on chords. From Mozart's piano concertos to the Beatles' hits, chords are foundational. Memorizing them is essential to songwriting, reading new music, and understanding the theory beyond the basics of piano. The fa …
