About Connie

I love teaching, and enjoy passing on that joy, knowledge, and experience to my students! I tailor lessons according to the student's goals, abilities, and preference in musical styles. Whether you're wanting to learn the violin to be a virtuoso or just as a personal hobby, I believe you should have fun with the learning process!

I am passionate about music and love teaching aspiring students! I am active as a violin teacher, performer, chamber and studio recording musician in the greater Los Angeles area. I hold a Masters of Music Degree in Violin Performance from California State Univers
ity, Long Beach and have been playing the violin since the age of four. I've enjoyed teaching private lessons for the past 17 years and have experience in teaching group and private lessons to students of all ages, coaching string orchestras and string ensembles. I have a broad education in music with knowledge of classical, modern, and world music, as well as advanced training in music theory which I incorporate in private lessons. I have also studied conducting, music analysis, music history, voice, and advanced piano.

*** Specialties ***
While I specialize in classical music, I help my students discover what genre of music they're passionate about learning, including classical, jazz, pop, and fiddle. Lessons include scales, technique, ear training, sight reading, music theory, solos, duets, music performance and the option to prepare for auditions and youth orchestras. I tailor the curriculum I use depending on the need of each individual student. Please contact me for up to date lesson availabilities!

***Repertoire***
Beginner to intermediate students use method books such as Essential Elements, Suzuki Method, and the Royal Conservatory of Music. For young students, I also use the Sassmannshaus Tradition, and the Violin Fun Book series. Intermediate to Advanced students learn technique using Carl Flesch scales, and studies from Shradiek, Sevcik, Mazas, and Kreutzer to name a few. Solo pieces including from composers such as Mozart, Franck, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Seitz, Bach, Handel, Beethoven and Vivaldi. I also encourage my students to explore other styles of music that interest them, such as pop, fiddling, movie music etc...

I have been taking violin lessons with Connie for almost 2 years now and i would highly recommend her! She has really helped me correct a lot of my bad habits from years of just playing on my own. Connie is professional, very patient and passionate about music and teaching. I take lessons with her privately (not with Take Lessons) and am thankful to have her as my teacher!

Michael is a great instructor, hands down. He's only been working with my son for a short time and he is able to get him focused and learning new things each lesson. He is very flexible with his schedule and if we are ever to miss because he's on tour, he always makes up the lesson and figures out a time that works for us. I'm grateful that we have found him and look forward to hearing them play each week when he comes to the house. Oh, and did I mention that my son is only 7? Michael's youngest student!

Great teacher!

My 14 year old son has been taking drum lessons for the last couple of months with Michael and he really enjoys his lessons. In fact, half an hour wasn't enough so we increased his lesson length to an hour! Michael is very approachable and patient and my son feels comfortable asking questions. He has greatly improved, and is excited about starting a band with his friends!

Matthew M.

Lakewood, CA

About Matthew

Music has been a part of my life since I was 5 years old, when my father would record my brother and I singing. I always loved singing and learned many of my favorite songs as a child.

I started playing the trumpet in the 4th grade, which has led me all the way to receiving my degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education! I was lucky enough to attend one of the nation's top music schools, The Peabody Institute, and I now work toward my Master's degree at California State University, Long Beach. I have enjoyed performing in everything from big-band-lead to principal trumpet in the orc
hestra, leading brass quintets and brass ensembles, and much more! The trumpet has been a huge passion for as long as I can remember now!

While I was learning songs as a child, I decided I wanted to join a band! Now here we are 10 years later and I've have the fortune of performing as a lead singer in bands across the country, and let me tell you there is no bigger thrill than getting in-front of a crowd full of cheering fans, performing music you love.

I've also been playing the guitar for just under 10 years. Playing the guitar has been both a complete joy, but also a fantastic learning experience. I have been learning songs of my favorite artists and even written my own material, and having the opportunity to immerse myself in my favorite music and create music of my own has taught me so much more about music and being a musician. I hope to impart this experience onto all of my students.

Whether it's trumpet, voice, or guitar, I love all things music and my #1 objective is to for my students to learn how it feels to experience what music REALLY has to offer, so to you reading this, let's make some noise!

*** Lesson Details ***
For starters, understand that you're going to have a blast! Within months of working together, I'll have you playing your favorite songs, or feeling prepared for that upcoming audition. I remember what it was like to have second thoughts about auditioning and performance, and I'll make sure those thoughts are a thing of the past for you!

During our lessons, I enjoy addressing the material you have to work on, whether in school or just for your own enjoyment. At the same time, I will present music and materials of my own, and I encourage you to do the same!

I have always enjoyed learning from my students as they have learned from myself, and I could only hope to express how rewarding it is when I see a student of mine progress from week to week and achieve their own goals.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced player, you can be guaranteed we'll make steady progress and we will achieve your goals. Get ready to wow your friends and family!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Metronome
Post-it Notes
Music Stand(s)
Chairs
Computer/Internet
Keyboard
Guitar(s)

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would provide utilities including music stand, metronome, some external source of pitch.

I expect the student to bring any and all assigned music/material they wish to work on. The student will also begin the lesson prepared with basic necessities, including a pencil (please, no pens) and all music assigned from prior lesson (if this is a first-lesson, bring any/all music you currently have and/or are working on). Vocal students will bring a bottle of water. Trumpet students will have their own valve oil and mouthpiece (if not originally included with your horn).

*** Specialties ***
Trumpet methods include (not limited to) Arban's, Clarke, Sachs, Rubank, Getchell, Adam, Schlossberg, Colin, Bai Lin.

For instruments outside the trumpet, methods will address school curriculum, unless student has advanced beyond provided materials.

I strongly encourage students of voice, guitar, and piano to pick material of their choosing.

Classical and rock are the genres to which I am most attracted

Vocal Lessons

I've been taking lessons with Matt for about 2 months now. Right away it was a very comfortable environment and vibe, which is important, especially as a beginning, aspiring singer. Takes the lessons slow and easy going at first, then jumps into exercises and focuses on directly what style the student is interested in. Very awesome dude, would definitely recommend! Thanks Matt!

Lessons with Shannon was probably the best choice I have ever made :) I had no prior vocal trainings and did not understand even the breathing techniques of singing. But she has been super patient with me and has helped me improve in a span of a month (of course practicing a lot on my own time too). Thanks Shannon!!!!
