I use a combination of somatic movement and experiencing, voice training, and musicianship to help singers achieve their singing goals. I help singers learn how to use their bodies well and embody music in order to achieve the results they want and have the results stick. Lesson plans vary depending on the student's goals. Some learning goals from previous students include freeing the voice, eliminating vocal strain and tension, improving intonation and rhythmic feel, improvising jazz and other African American folk styles, and building vocal endurance. An Ya is an amazing musician. She doesn't only teach people like me how to sing. She's out there in the real world... playing her viola and singing in front of crowds throughout the region. In my experience with An Ya, she adapted my vocal lessons to work specifically on areas where I was struggling. She always seem to drill down to the real root of the vocal problem I was having and helped me improve. I wasn't able to stick with lessons as long as I had hoped, due to conflicts with my work schedule.
