Barbara N.

Brookhaven, PA

About Barbara

I have been singing for as long as I can remember. It is my very favorite activity. I have transformed my love of singing into a career.

I have been teaching music lessons for over 25 years. When you study with me you will have the advantage of that experience. I have extensive experience teaching students of all ages. Throughout my teaching career I have taught students with varied backgrounds and diverse needs. If you are a person who was told not to sing by your music teacher, don't give up! I have taught many children and adults to match pitches and improve their singing voices.

I earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Moravian College and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Temple University. While at Temple, I studied standard vocal repertoire and Early Music. I have also completed graduate courses in Early Childhood and Elementary Education at West Chester University.

I served on the faculty of Suburban Music School for 17 years where I taught voice, piano and recorder lessons. I also directed the Children’s Choir and the Women’s Choir. I was formerly on the faculty of Delaware County Community College where I taught courses in the Music Department; and of Temple Music Prep where I instituted, developed and maintained a vocal program at Temple University’s Ambler Campus.

In addition to teaching I was employed for eleven years as a chorister at Christ Church Christiana Hundred in Greenville, DE where I have had the opportunity to sing for such notable conductors as John Rutter, Sir David Wilcox, Sir Philip Ledger, Stephen Cleobury, and James O’Donnell. Previous choral work has included singing for Dr. Ifor Jones and for Michael Korn. I perform in solo and chamber music recitals throughout the Philadelphia area and in Cape May, NJ and with a Celtic group called Celtic Women and Friends.

*** Lesson Details ***
Voice Lessons

When you study voice with me, you will start with the basics - posture, breathing and tone production. If you have studied before, we will review these areas and brush up on anything that needs work. The next step is to learn some vocal exercises to warm up and develop your voice. When the exercises are going well, we will begin to work on songs. You will need to learn some classical songs because they help to develop your voice, but we will also work on the kind of music you like best. In addition to songs, we will work on solfege (do, re, mi, etc.) which helps to train your ear and to improve your sightreading ability. If you don't know how to read music I will teach you that. If you read music but have some gaps in your knowledge, we will fill those in.

I teach what is called bel canto (beautiful singing). It is a healthy vocal technique that will help you avoid vocal problems. When you learn to sing with this technique, you can sing any style of music you want. After a few months of study, you should be able to tell that your voice is growing stronger, that you have better breath control, and that your range is increasing.

Although I have high expectations of my students, I am relaxed and friendly. If you love to laugh, we will enjoy that together!

Piano Lessons

When you study piano with me you will enjoy playing a variety of songs from your lesson book. As you advance, we may add a repertoire book which increases the number and variety of songs you play. There are many excellent piano methods. I use different methods for different students, depending on their needs.

Lessons will include posture and proper hand position, warm-ups, songs and music theory. Music theory is the study of notation and how music is put together. You will have a workbook with exercises for this study. If there is a particular style of music you would like to play, we will look for music at your level to add to your lesson. After a few months of study, you should know how to read basic notation and be able to play a number of songs. You will also have increased your knowledge of musical notation and harmony.

I expect my students to practice in preparation for their lesson every week. I am relaxed and friendly, so that should help to put you at your ease.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Piano, music stand, stereo equip, seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching the bel canto style singing. With this technique, a person can sing any style of music she or he chooses.

Vince T.

Philadelphia, PA

About Vince

Vince Tampio is a professional trumpeter, arranger, composer, educator, and multi-instrumentalist in the Philadelphia and New York regions. His primary instrument is trumpet; he also performs on assorted brass and electric bass. Vince holds a Masters of Music degree in Jazz Performance from the University of the Arts; and holds a Bachelor of Science in Music degree concentrating in Jazz Studies and Theory & Composition from the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz.

Vince studied jazz trumpet through undergraduate and graduate school with Rebecca Coupe Franks, Dennis Wasko, and
John Swana. Vince has also attended master classes held by Matt Gallagher, Craig Morris, Claudio Roditi, Malcolm McNab, Scott Holbert, Jeffrey Curnow, and Alison Balsom.

Vince first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School. He directed trumpet master classes for high school students. Vince later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, and arrangement and composition. While earning his Master of Music at the University of the Arts, he served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams.

Also at UArts, Vince was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which he conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. He currently teaches a number of electric bass students at Philadelphia's Rock to the Future. Vince privately teaches trumpet, electric bass guitar, ear training, music theory, improvisation, arrangement, and composition to students of all ages and levels.

Each student approaches music differently, and Vince tailors his teaching to fit that approach. He asks a student what they're aiming to accomplish, then set short and long term goals in order to acheive them. Vince believes a strong technical foundation leads to freer ease of artistic expression. His students receive a wholistic approach to music on whatever instrument of their choice.

Vince is the trumpeter and arranger for Philadelphia’s premier 1960’s soul tribute band the York Street Hustle. Additional bands Vince has performed with and arranged for include the John Byrne Band, the Cat’s Pajamas, You Do You, Red 40 & The Last Groovement, and Heyward Howkins spanning genres of rock, soul, folk, funk, jazz, electronic, and more. He is also a founding member of Philadelphia's answer to the Memphis Horns, the Philly Phatness horn section. Vince has appeared on more than 20 albums during the past five years, including his own debut solo album SYZYGY, and its follow up, SYZYGY: Remix. Fast becoming a sought after trumpet and arranger, Vince continually pursues work performing, arranging, composing, teaching and recording original music.

Quotes:

"Vince proves himself a very creative composer. I look forward to hearing more from this upcoming composer & instrumentalist." - Fred "Rock Steady Freddie" Reiter

"Vince plays his horn with creative passion and soul, his tone is very open and full these two combined make him one of the leading up and coming young Jazz trumpet players of today." - Rebecca Coupe Franks

"I've had the great pleasure of working with Vince as an arranger and writer. His music explores many styles and directions, and is always well crafted. He has an original and distinctive voice as a player, an arranger, and a writer. Such dedicated talent deserves to be heard, and I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot from Vince in the future." - Vinnie Martucci

Lori A.

Avondale, PA

About Lori

Hello! Thank you for your interest in my profile.
I teach piano, horn, trumpet, theory & ear training, and coach ensembles, performance class as well as music and movement class for ages 0-6, and drum circle and cultural literacy for adults.

I am a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, and I've played all over the world. I've played with soloists from Frank Sinatra to Diana Ross, Frankie Valli and the 4 Seasons to Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. I still perform and consider this important to my teaching as well.

Some major accomplishments include an invitation to the White Ho
use, over 50 solo performances with orchestras starting with The Philadelphia Orchestra at age 15, a performance for the Princess of Thailand, and early television performances starting at age 7. In order to accomplish these things, I had great teachers, a regimen of discipline and practice, an expectation I have of my students, and all the rewards that have lasted a lifetime. Properly taught music lessons are life lessons and are never a waste. I incorporate fun into the lessons as discipline and fun must be combined for success and enjoyment at all levels.

My teachers included Eleanor Sokoloff, Susan Starr, and Dale Clevenger.

I've taught for 29 years, and have a proven track record of success. I've taught at Universities including The University of Notre Dame, The University of Tennessee, The Chinese University and the Academy of Performing Arts in Hong Kong. I adore my students. Each one needs to be assessed and taught differently. Something you cannot learn in school, only through years of experience!

I teach in Avondale-Kennet Square-Chaddsford, Bryn Mawr-Villanova, PA, Hockessin-Wilmington,, DE, Newark, DE, and Cherry Hill, NJ with possibility of travel 10 minutes away. Please note: If you want in home piano lessons, you need a reasonably high quality instrument, and must maintain the tuning. I have perfect pitch and it will be crucial to me.

Classical Piano · In home
While I had previous experience playing an instrument MANY years ago, I never played the piano and started taking lessons with Lori as an adult. In almost no time I was able to read the bass clef (left hand) notes and within the year I had learned all the scales (majors and relative minors - both harmonic and melodic) and arpeggios (root and inversions). I was also playing "real" pieces of music.

Lori stresses good technique and good practice habits and can suggest more than one way to master a concept. She also makes learning the piano fun.

Vocal Training · Online
I am a beginner vocal student who 3 months ago started in-home studio lessons with Will, and continued with online lessons after I moved to another state. He is excellent at explaining and illustrating vocal concepts and techniques. And even if you are nervous and shy about singing (like I am), he is great at making you feel comfortable. He's also good at thinking on his feet and adaptable, as at times I have had erratic work schedules or had bad vocal strain after starting a new job. Thanks for all your support and optimism, Will! Hope your business continues to flourish.

About Anthony J.

Hello knowledge thirsty students! It is so great that all of you are taking your education and training as far as you can by seeking outside professional instruction. I love being a part of helping my students learn and grow. I, myself, hold two undergraduate major degrees, a BS in Biology, and a BA in psychology along with a minor degree in philosophy. Life is all about learning new things and making yourself a better, brighter, more adept being each and every day. To do anything less is selling yourself, and the world around you, short. As a matter of fact, when i taught prior to here, i fe
lt the information and it's comprehension and digestion is so important, that i would make sure my students understood before leaving them for the day, no matter how long it took, and without charging. the money is just a life necessity, that allows us to do the things we love. but it is not important in and of itself. wisdom and knowledge, truth and beauty. These things are meaningful and real.
