Glynis D. Long Beach, CA

About Glynis

Glynis has been reading music since before she knew how to read words. Her mother started teaching her piano lessons at age 3, and she started taking voice lessons at age 7. She learned from an early age to practice every day. She has taught all levels and ages of piano and voice for many years. Glynis specializes in jazz voice, but has a very strong classical and musical theatre background. She is an arranger, composer, educator, and singer. She received her AA in Professional Music from SWCC, school for music vocations, then got her BA in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at CSU Sacramento. She is currently working on her Masters in Jazz Studies, Vocal Performance at the Bob Cole Conservatory inside of CSU Long Beach. We love Glynis! Glynis has a delightful, cheerful personality. She is a very engaging teacher for our 8 year old daughter, Kate. Kate is learning a lot about the piano, playing the piano, and music theory. Glynis is prompt in getting to the lessons on time and responding to text messages. We appreciate Glynis' musical talent, teaching skills, and also that she is easy to communicate with on scheduling issues.
We have four musical kids and have had MANY music lessons and music teachers. I am credible in saying Glynis is a GREAT Music Teacher!

Ryan M. Torrance, CA

About Ryan

Hello, I am a music teacher, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter. My passion is music and I absolutely love teaching. I have over ten years experience teaching music in all different types of settings to all different age groups, but my favorite is one-on-one time with a beginner who is excited to learn. I love inspiring music in others and with my time away from performing, I am passionate about teaching. I specialize in performing and teaching musical styles that include pop, rock, jazz, funk, and classical. I appreciate and teach all levels of music theory and music performance. I graduated from the Herb Alpert school of music at UCLA where I obtained a degree in jazz performance with a minor in music education. My love and appreciation of music is where my focus as a

Ryan knows his stuff, great teacher!

I'd highly recommend Ryan if you are looking for a very knowledgeable, easy going and talented teacher to help with your bass playing. I starting taking lessons because I wanted to advance past a beginner level and I just couldn't do it by myself.

His lessons helped me learn different techniques and theory, but also in a relateable way that was easier to understand, which helped me learn quicker. I'm sure any level of player could benefit from having him as a teacher. Thanks man, keep up the good work.
Cory B. Cypress, CA

About Cory

I am a classically trained performer with a Master's degree from London's Royal College of Music. I love finding each student's own learning style to tailor the experience, and I encourage my students to make their own decisions about musical expression (with plenty of guidance, of course!). In my work as a performer I have played with orchestras all over the world, from the South London Sinfonia to the Bombay Chamber Orchestra. My musical life is full of variety, and I think that the experiences I've had as a musician make me a creative and thoughtful teacher. *** Lesson Details *** I wouldn't call myself strict, but I do have high standards. I expect my students to put in the work at home, so that we can get the most out of lesson time, but I think that my expectations are ...

Cory has been teaching my 11 year old son for only five lessons in Oboe and we couldn't be more than happier! Her calm and patient demeanor works well for my son. Cory is very knowledgeable and instructs my son without making it too overwhelming for him. Few weeks back, we had some company over and our son wanted to play a short piece for our guests. Everyone was so surprised that he only had two lessons and could play a melody (completely Cory's doing)! We feel lucky to have found a great instructor!

I've been a music teacher for twelve years, and make a living as a professional Bass player- even took piano classes when I got my music degree. Nathan in Downey CA was completely awesome during our piano lessons. I had this ridiculous assumption that I had to always start chromatic and major diatonic scales on piano always on my first finger of either hand- which is apparently not at all actually necessary. Crazy, because that was the biggest blockade to me playing piano for the last 8 years and Nathan blew that ridiculous concept out of my mind. The smallest things that I get in the habit of and somehow that one thing got stuck in my head as the only way to do things. I feel bad for not signing up for lessons, like... 10 years ago. I practiced my scales for about two hours, and they're possibly the most boring thing to play- even for a musician. I feel like they've got some new life breathed into them.
Definitely get a lesson or two with Nathan on that expensive piano you've got sitting around. it's good to note that he explained everything really clearly and the web connection and clarity was great. I could see him being awesome for a young bass guitar student too, as he mentioned he also plays bass.

Marc L. Long Beach, CA

About Marc

Marc is a graduate of UC Berkeley, and recently completed his Master of Music in Piano Performance at Cal State Long Beach. He has been teaching piano students for the past seven years and has worked as a rehearsal pianist and accompanist. He specializes in classical piano, but also has experience in musical theater and jazz ensembles, and has performed on period instruments (harpsichord and fortepiano). *** Lesson Details *** Students of all ages are welcome, and will find Marc to be as laid back an instructor as the student's drive will allow for. Those aspiring to become accomplished pianists will be given a strict regiment of exercises to work with, while those for whom music is more of a hobby can expect a more laid back lesson; he's always up for discussing the history and ...

Patience, Patient, professional, helpful, positive

He has a lot of confidence in his student. His mannerism is very calm especially when you make a mistake. He is very positive and always say you can do it even when I mess up so when I get home and practice, I say oh yes, I can do it. Thanks Marc

I have been taking lessons on both Skype and in-person with Ian since I began playing the bagpipes three years ago. I have never had a music teacher prior who shows more passion in his musicianship and genuine interest in his students than Ian. He doesn't miss a (grace) note, and will challenge you to vastly improve your technique. Ian's style contains a humanistic spirituality unlike anything I have heard before. During his summer schools, I have made significant improvements to my style and technical abilities. He is the real deal.

My name is Officer Matt and before I write a review about Mr. Ian W., I find it necessary to establish ethos with you (the reader) to bolster my credibility.

I am a law enforcement trainer in Northern California (firearms, defensive tactics, SWAT, chemical agents, and FTO), a former professional athlete (decathlon - fortunate enough to train under the best coaches in the USA), and am a current track and field coach.

I have had the honor of training with Ian Whitelaw for approximately 1 year, I have attended one of Ian's bagpipe workshops, and I have witnessed Ian compete at professional venue in San Diego (Angus MacDonald...where I witnessed Ian win both the professional grade Piobaireachd and the MSR).

I quickly learned that Ian possesses an innate ability to process information and transfer concepts to individuals of all aptitudes. Ian's patience, enthusiasm, and motivation are key to his students success and are a true testament to his understanding of coaching psychology.

Ian can answer the "why," questions for inquisitive learners (like myself) and he focuses on consistency, proper form, proper techniques during play, fundamentals, tradition, decorum, and he makes playing the instrument FUN with his eccentric personality and never-ending optimism.

Ian is a one-stop shop and I sincerely look forward to lessons with him every month. I would recommend training with Ian to anyone willing to put in the hard work it takes to become great.

I have attended Ian's school twice, and both times my piping has gotten substantially better. Personalized instruction, and a focus on pipe setup, as well as work with both light music and piobaireachd, make this a very well-rounded school. As someone who has never played with a band, I enjoyed playing and learning in a small group setting, and then coming together as a group to play tunes in the afternoons. I would recommend Ian's school to any piper looking for a great school experience. - Adrienne Rieck
