About Justin
Hello! My name is Justin, a Christian musician that recently moved to the Nashville/Brentwood area from Michigan. I'm a pianist, guitarist and bassist that loves performing, teaching, learning, and above all enjoying life. When I'm not working on music, I'm usually found biking or running through the hills of southern Nashville. I love nature and all of the opportunities that it gives us to explore and learn!

I started my formal music education when I was in the third grade, taking classical piano lessons at my parents’ request. I progressed steadily but never felt truly connected to what I was doing. Two years later, I was introduced to pop piano music through the worship band at my church. I learned to play by ear and read chord charts, taking my abilities far beyond the reach of classical piano. By the time that I reached hi
gh school, I was playing piano, guitar and bass as well as singing and acting. By my senior year, music had consumed so much of my time that sports were pushed to the side. I loved it!

Before I knew it, I was being pressured into picking a college. I had planned on going to school for Computer Science, but knew that music was my passion. While the money would have been great, sitting in a cubicle just isn’t my style. I decided upon Cornerstone University, a small Christian school in Grand Rapids, MI. For two years, I studied piano, voice and guitar in the school’s Contemporary Christian Music program. The program was great, but I needed a more competitive environment that only a larger school could offer.

In the fall of 2008, I transferred to Grand Valley State University and loved it! My teachers were great, the other students were supportive, and overall there was a culture of learning and growth. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance from Grand Valley in April of 2011. I decided to take the summer off of working and enjoy the sunshine, then moved to the Nashville area in November of 2011. I’m currently serving as Worship Leader for a church in Nashville.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe that every student is unique, therefore each lesson should also be unique. By understanding the student's motivation to study music and play an instrument, we can work together to set goals that will set the student up for success.

For piano, I prefer to use either the Bastien or Alfred series, depending on the student's goals, experience, and age. For guitar or bass, it depends on which style(s) of music the student would like to learn. I have plenty of resources available, so the sky is the limit. No matter which instrument you study, the ability to play properly is important from the very first lesson!

Above all, learning music should be fun! Life is about finding the balance between work and play - for me, music does that perfectly. What started as a simple hobby has turned into a wonderful career. With time and practice, it's amazing how much this small hobby can enrich your life!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Quiet home studio with seating for parents.

*** Specialties ***
While in college, I studied classical voice and piano, as well as a few semesters of guitar. During that time, I held positions as both a classical singer and a pianist at churches in town.

On the side, I specialize in pop and rock music. Before college, most of my piano experience was playing with bands, pit orchestras, coffee shop duets, etc.

Classical music is invaluable, but I realize that most students are more interested in learning how to play contemporary music. As a young musician that grew up playing what he heard on the radio, I'm able to incorporate classical music and technique with modern theory and aural skills. Once you have all of those basics, the student will easily be able to learn a variety of styles of music.

About Jake
I want to teach the material that excites students. After a handful of really crummy experiences with teachers who wanted me to learn a specific way, I stumbled across a music school in Philadelphia and a college in Boston that really got the principle of teaching what students are drawn to. Bruce Springsteen wrote, "we learned more from a three minute record than we ever learned in school." Although I don't agree with that on all occasions, there is something so special about hearing something that makes you tick and going, "ok let me listen to that again, and now let me figure out HOW I can do that myself." As a teacher, I'm flexible, focused, and also love to have fun with music. It's something that makes us excited and alive; there's no use in pursuing something you love if you don't equally enjoy the process of getting great at
it. So let's find what makes YOU excited about music, and let's figure out out to make you great at it.

About Courtney
A Nashville native, I started teaching piano lessons in 2000. I love educating students around all things music - from jazz, pop, classical and contemporary! I am an active member of the Nashville Area Piano Study Club and a graduate of Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music pre-college program, where I studied music theory, music history and piano performance courses for more than ten years under the Myra Jackson Blair Scholarship with Craig Nies. Additionally, I received piano scholarships from multiple universities and colleges and received the highest scholarship in history from Furman University for any musical instrument. Ranked first in multiple national piano competitions and third in an international piano competition, I love music and am excited to share my passion with others in a learning environment, where your child
will be engaged while having a blast!

I have seen Ms. Cotton in action and am impressed with every area of her teaching. Her knowledge, patience and encouragement are particularly striking. Although I am an accomplished pianist and have been playing decades long than she, I consult her for "mimi lessons" she is the most talented performer I have personally ever known and I am a music professional.

About Dana
I am a graduate of the Florida State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. During my time there, I studied classical voice for four years, music theory and ear training for two years, and vocal pedagogy/opera workshop for one year. In my pedagogical studies, I taught classical voice while learning a variety of instruction styles and approaches to teaching voice. This knowledge now assists me in instructing students of varying ages and skill levels. I also feel more than equipped to adapt to the student's needs, be it pop, musical theater, classical, etc. styles of singing. All my methods are still routed in classical technique though, in order to make sure the student is utilizing their instrument in a healthy way that makes sense for them.

I am a fan of a wide variety of music. I am especially fond of music that provides a structure for improvisation and the unexpected results that can arise when musicians allow themselves to explore their instruments without the restrictions that typically more formulaic styles impose. However, I also enjoy music that is incredibly orchestrated and requires exact mechanics and pristine technique. Most of all, I need music to feel generous toward the listener or I lose interest very quickly. Music is a gift. It can change your life if you let it. If you are adventurous and willing to challenge yourself you can find all the treasures of the universe in the mastery of an instrument. Did I mention its a lot of fun? Pick me, you wont be disappointed.

I love the guitar, and so getting to teach students how to play something that is so dear to me is an absolute joy. I have been playing for 9 years and only keep getting more interested i the instrument. I love playing everything from jazz to country, to finger-style, to blues and used to even dabble in some metal. My professional performance experience includes solo guitar gigs, rock band shows, musical theatre pit work, dance band playing, and gigs along the east coast with rising country acts.
I will graduate from Belmont University in the Spring of 2018 with a degree in Commercial Music, so I have had the "conservatory training" in regards to theory, music history, and studying the guitar, but before college I was largely a self taught player and am now a professionally performing musician here in Nashville. That being said, I can
teach all of the "correct" notions of music from my academic background, but I also have real experience regarding what a musician needs to be able to do if they want to become a professional.
I do my best to make lessons relaxed. I don't ever want a student to be nervous for a lesson with me because they did not practice as much as they think they should. While I encourage as much practice as possible, I care more about a student realizing the positive force that music can be in their lives; music doesn't need to be a stressor.
