Raymond C.

San Diego, CA

About Raymond

I was fortunate to be professionally taught in the Romero style of classical guitar and have studied with great concert artists such as Robert Wetzel, Dr. Alexander Dunn, Celino Romero, Dr. Randy Pile, and Dr. Colin McAllister at Grossmont College, University of California San Diego, and Victoria Conservatory of Music. I have performed in numerous masterclasses including Antonio De Innocentis, Alexander Dunn, Gerd Wuestemann, Scott Wolf, Jason Vieaux, and Celino Romero. I have also performed with various ensembles including the Grossmont, VCM, UCSD, Villa Musica, and SDSU guitar ensembles.

While I get quite a bit of enjoyment out of playing the guitar, I get greater enjoyment from passing my knowledge and experience of the instrument along to others. I have been teaching since 1999 and still get excited when a student is able to play their first melody, chord, or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics and techniques for classical guitar:

Finger-style picking (Classical)
Rasguados
Tremolo
Ligado/Slur technique
Scales. Arpeggios, & Modes
Sight Reading (Tab and Standard Notation)
Music Theory (Harmony and Counterpoint)
Performance practices

Learning the guitar (and music for that matter) is not so much like climbing a ladder as it is a journey. Sometimes there are obstacles you must pass, but once you get past these obstacles there is no stopping you from achieving your goal. My job is to make it easier for you to get past these obstacles (ex. technical problem) and get you to the music you want, whether it is playing your favorite song or writing the next hit single.

Note:
The classical guitar program has sight reading requirements and technique is emphasized. The beginning student will learn basic technique (ex. Apoyando and Free strokes), right hand arpeggios, left hand ligados, and sight reading through the use of exercises and etudes. Advanced students will focus on style and form. They will also be encouraged to transcribe and compose there own works. All students will be encouraged to perform, but not required.

All students are expected to have their own instrument, music stand, and books. Daily practice (20-30 min/day) is required.

While the guitar presents challenges along the way it can also be one of the most worthwhile journeys of your life. It would be an honor for me to serve as a guide on this journey.

I took four lessons so far with Ray and found that he is not only a great teacher but also an amazing guitarist. He corrects my fingering to make it easier and gives me ideas of how to practice certain strums. He also teaches me effective ways how to improve my skills. He is very pleasant and easy to get along with and learn from. Strongly recommended.

Raymond is an excellent guitar instructor.

My first lesson with Raymond went exceptionally well. After listening to me play a little, Raymond immediately honed in on my biggest weakness, and stressed the vital importance of using the metronome to play the Giuliani Right Hand Studies correctly. HIs manner was disarming and he happily answered all my questions as I tried to "pick his brain" with the many questions I had re. technique. Thus, Raymond proved to be a very knowledgeable instructor, carefully analyzing my right hand technique and sharing from his extensive background the subtleties of modern classical guitar technique as opposed to the Segovia and Romero styles. Above all, his amiable demeanor and eagerness to help me become a better player was evident throughout the entire lesson. HIs respectful behavior was very conducive to learning, and I am very excited about my next lesson with Raymond!

Outstanding teacher, highly skilled pro

Ray does phenomenal work teaching guitar as a gifted instructor and inspiring performer. My wife and I cannot stress enough how far our son has come in playing skill as well as overall understanding and appreciation of music. In choosing an instrument, we wanted one our son could take with him wherever might go in life, so as to always have the company of his own live music he could pour himself into. Ray has made that vision true. Absolutely recommended!

David B.

Santee, CA

About David

After graduating from Salford University, England with a Bachelors degree (Honors) in Music and Composing I worked for a short time as a commercial "jingle" writer, before moving to San Diego, marrying my dream girl, and opening my own music recording, teaching and production studio. From there I have been teaching lessons, recording bands and writing music for independent film ad video games for the last 6 years. Throughout this time I've been continually performing live in venues all over California.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach both from a privately rented studio in Santee and from my ho
me studio in La Mesa. Both are fully equipped for guitar, bass and drum lessons and even have recording facilities! In my lesson plans I try to combine theory and technique with practical application (that is, playing music and rocking out!).

A typical lesson begins with a warm up and review of last weeks' lesson, and then moves to a new concept or technique. Once this new idea is understood, we give it a practical application by using it a song the student is familiar with. We finish up by setting some homework and answering any questions the student my have.

My lessons are structured and goal orientated (I want my students playing songs they love as soon as possible to keep the inspiration and excitement going!) but I adapt each lesson plan to suit the student, accommodating different musical tastes and learning styles. Most important I keep the lessons fun and engaging - it's the best way to learn!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Fulling equipped, professional teaching studio.
Guitars, drums, amps, PAs, Pianos, Mandolins and much more!

*** Specialties ***
Very versatile both in preferred styles and my ability to adapt to students requests. Can cover anything from jazz to metal, or pop to blues, on guitar, bass or drums.

David is very relaxed and put me at ease instantly. He was very interested in my knowledge base and goals so he could fine tune the lessons for me. My only dissapointment is that he doesn't have an hour time slot available yet.

Excellent Teacher

Dave is able to work with me, a beginner, and provide me with enough challenge so that I keep learning and also keep interested in drums. He has a great sense of humor along with patience which is important with a teacher whom is teaching a beginner. At times he will also take out a guitar and play along which adds to the fun.

She is my daughter's teacher and she is awesome! They get along so well and my daughter has learned and grown so much from her lessons. No only that, but she loves and looks forward to her lessons while stating that she "gets to practice". How many students say they GET to practice instead of "have to practice? "
I highly recommend Tiffany Lynne Sieker.

Aside from being an amazing violin player, Tiffany is a great instructor. I haven't taken lessons since I was 14 -- that's almost 30 years -- and while I consider myself to be a professional-caliber violin and viola player (I'm also concertmaster of a local community orchestra), I know I have areas that can use improvement. Tiffany was very quick to spot them, and to find ways to help me improve them. After only a few sessions, I've already noticed a positive change in my sound and technique. I am continuing to work with her to keep improving and to reach my full potential.

Tiffany has studied under some well-known teachers, and attended Mannes School of Music in New York City (some refer to Mannes as the "little sister" to Julliard). She is well-versed in classical and modern music, performing regularly for classical orchestras, ballets, musicals, and an Irish Punk Rock band! While I'm sure this is all in her profile, I just want to make mention of it here, because it showcases not only her knowledge and experience, but her versatility.

Whether you're a beginner, mid-range amateur, or professional looking for improvement (like me), I highly recommend Tiffany. You won't go wrong with her!

I hold a BA in Music Education with an emphasis in piano performance. My experience includes accompanying choirs, small groups, and soloists; playing keyboard in a band; performing in a duo piano ensemble for community functions; performing as part of an orchestra; and playing keyboard in the studio.

I began teaching in high school, when my first students were neighbor children, and I discovered the satisfaction the comes with introducing music into people's lives. I enjoy teaching all ages. My students have ranged from beginners to advanced. My students (and their parents) comment on my
patience and enthusiasm. I welcome more students to inspire with a love a music!

*** Lesson Details ***
Each new student brings so much potential. It's my goal to discover what a student's unique traits are so I can motivate continued learning. Lessons establish a strong foundation in keyboard skills and music theory. From there, I encourage students to pursue goals that may range from mastering Bach to conquering a Gershwin song to playing Carrie Underwood arrangements of favorites. Students learn about music history and well known composers, too. A better understanding of music means a deeper enjoyment of it. My job as a teacher is to help build that understanding in the students -- and that will stay with them throughout their lives.

My 2 kids (ages 7 and 9) are taking piano lessons from Paul. We switched from another piano teacher about 6 months ago and the difference in both of my childrens' ability is substantial. I am simply amazed at what my kids can do on the piano with Paul as our piano teacher.

Paul is an excellent piano teacher. He is very patient with my kids and dedicated to developing them into "whole" musicians. He teaches them piano technique and theory so that my children will be able to create music with other musicians as well as have a repertoire of songs to play for others. The songs are varied and very interesting. He even has my son working on 'the blues'! He sends recordings over email to help my children hear what the music should sound like and encourages them to listen over and over to gain 'a feel' for how a piece should be played. With Paul, it feels like my children are his only students!

I recommend Paul to anyone who wants to learn or improve their skill on the piano.

Best Teacher to Learn the Piano With

I have been taking piano lessons from Paul Burd for two years now. I am an adult student that returned to the piano after an extended hiatus. I studied the piano and saxophone from elementary school through middle school, but Paul is the best teacher I have ever studied with. In the past two year, I have learned more about music and technique than I ever had when I was a child.

Mr. Burd is very encouraging while trying to bring out the best in his students. He focuses on technique and provides excellent constructive criticism. I really appreciate his ability to focus on my personal growth by tailoring his lessons to strengthen my weaknesses. His passion for music is inspirational, and his knowledge of music is expansive.

TL;DR, Mr. Paul Burd is an excellent and knowledgeable teacher. I highly recommend him to anyone with a desire to study music.

Found The Right Teacher

Paul has helped me improve my piano playing technique while exploring many new and exciting things about music. He is very patient, accommodating, understanding, and enthusiastic. He is a perfect teacher for adults or children who wish to have solid foundation with music and various instruments. I also found out that I enjoy coming to his peaceful and very well decorated studio located on a quiet street near Lake Murray in La Mesa. “Playing music is a lot more fun than just listening”. Learning music from a dedicated and knowledgeable teacher like Paul will help us play with joy, style, and passion.
