I have had 3 lessons with Alexander so far and I have 2 more left. I'm still up in the air whether I will continue lessons with him or not. Here's why;

Sustains: Professional and Knowledgeable; Alexander definitely knows what he's talking about. I've noticed major improvements since I've started working with him. Keep in mind, I practice a lot on my own, but Alexander provides you with the tools and materials you need to continue growing in the fastest way possible. He doesn't have a teaching method set in stone. He tailors each lesson to benefit the student based on where he or she is skill-wise. Alexander observes you closely while you play and offers you advice and solutions to specific problems when he notices you struggling. Some of my issues are solved immediately.

Improves: Alexander lacks, in my opinion, a very important virtue that I believe all teachers should possess. A passion to teach you. You forget this when you are sitting with him in his studio, but the realization comes back and hits you when the clock hits 30 minutes exact and he says, "And that's all we have time for." Let me be very clear, -I'm receiving what a paid for-, so I'm not upset. I just think a teacher should invest in a student's growth and their commitment to the student shouldn't be based solely on what they make out of it financially. Unfortunately, I know that if the money ever stops coming in our lessons will end immediately. Once again, I can't complain or be upset. I paid for a service and I'm receiving it.

This was made clear to me again last week when I had to cancel a lesson.
The teachers need a 24-hour notice for cancellations which is fair and understandable. However, I didn't know this at the time so when I cancelled he only had about 4 hours notice. His initial response was that, "He understood but TakeLessons will charge you for the lesson anyway. Let me know if you still want to meet." After texting him back explaining my problem with that, he went ahead and ensured I wasn't charged. Let me repeat, -In the end he did help me-, but if I hadn't said anything he would've let TakeLessons charge me.

Conclusion: 4 stars. I paid for a service and I'm receiving it well. Alexander's talent for teaching really shines when you listen to his advice, act on it, and notice yourself improving. Understand that improvement comes from practicing on your own time, but Alexander will provide you with everything you need to expedite your growth.
Remember, however, this is a business. If they stop profiting from you don't expect any leniency.

Excellent Teacher

Along with being incredibly knowledgeable, Alex has the patience and communication skills that really make him excel as a teacher. As a complete beginner to the upright bass (and music in general), I find Alex breaks concepts down in a clear, step-by-step fashion, so that it is not overwhelming. He also gives useful tips on how to be a better learner when tackling challenges, which helps make my personal practice even more effective. Alex is approachable and eager to answer questions even in between classes - I highly recommend him as teacher!

About Rebecca

I have been teaching piano for over 18 years. I played piano and keyboards in a band for several years, and I have been playing piano and singing at church for over nine years. I can help you learn the proper technique and musical skills for any kind of playing in the future, with more advanced teaching for classical piano. I can also teach chord playing for students that want to quickly learn their favorite songs. I'll even help you learn how to sing along! *** Lesson Details *** I have a lot of fun at my lessons, but I emphasize the importance of practice. For beginning students, I like to use the Alfred's Basic Piano Library (that teaches piano playing and note reading), which I supplement with fun games, history projects and music journal topics to ensure my students get a ...

My son had been taking piano lessons for seven years and was losing interest. David's passion for music, knowledge of music theory, ability to read the student and know the best way to approach the lessons is exactly what my son needed. Along with his background in a wide variety of genres….classical, rock, jazz, etc. has made learning more exciting, resulting in a renewed interest.

I started receiving lessons from David a few years ago, to improve my guitar abilities. I always used to tell people, "I've been playing guitar since the Eighties, though you would never know it." At the time I started, I knew some Metal riffs, three-chord Punk Rock progressions, and simple 12-bar blues. Though I took two guitar classes and first-year Music Theory in college in the early Nineties, the only scale I could say I knew was "blues pentatonic," emphasis on the quotation marks.

My goal was to relearn Modes/Scales, and brush up on theory, so that I could write more complex material. David taught me that, and so much more. Over these few years, I've learned Progressive Rock, Fusion/Jazz, and even some Country styles, as well as a great deal more about Metal and, yes, even Punk from David. I can play leads and solos with much more proficiency, in timing with the rhythm, and more tonally correct, than I ever could before. He has also helped me read music better, construct more professional-sounding compositions, and has started me on my own path to produce my own recordings, from recommending and using recording software, to capturing dynamics with mic placement, to mixing the rough takes to get the most out of the sound.

For a musician of any level or caliber, having an instructor like David is a true asset--for he has the knowledge and skills to take an entry-level musician every step of the way to becoming a professional performer, recorder, mixer, engineer, and producer. The only limit to the lesson's potential is your own level of determination, which David quite expertly helps you to improve with every session. Even if your goal is to simply learn to play one song on one instrument--and David teaches MANY instruments--he will have you playing that song like the musician who wrote it before you realize it--as long as you stick with your practice between lessons. That part's up to you!

Kareem has been teaching me since I was in the fourth grade. I am currently in 8th grade, and man what can I say, he's as good as it gets! After two years I was in my middle school jazz band, which is not easy for a person who has only been playing for two years. You, yourself will be able to see extreme progress within just a few lessons! You must know Kareem teaches at Pierce College, a class at the Tacoma School of the Arts (which I hopefully will be attending and taking his class), teaches numerous private students every week, and lastly he performs with a stellar jazz band of his own! He is extremely dedicated to the musical field. If I were anybody reading this review and wanted to start playing any of the variety of instruments he plays, I would call Kareem K.!

Kareem is a dedicated and diligent musician and teacher. He is able to share his love of music with students of all ages. Not only is he extremely capable of teaching students the technical aspects of music, but his lessons incorporate a wider perspective as well, such as, listening to different genres of music and asking his students to discuss what they hear. He is always positive and encourages students to do their best. He has style and class and it is a privilege that two of my children can study under his tutelage.

Kareem is the man. I first met him while playing in the Pierce College Big Band--which he directs and is a perennial first place at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. I studied with him for 6 months formally but over the past 2 years through his weekly jam session and mutual gigs he's become a tremendous influence in my life. Whether your a beginner on your axe or an aspiring jazz student of any level he is the instructor for you.
As an improvisor his main influences are Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon, and Joshua Redman. For any jazz musician on any instrument he is a master instructor of bebop. His overall playing versatility is solid but his forte is bebop. He is simply a beast of bebop and can aptly guide you along the path of musical enlightenment. Also, like most great jazz musicians his piano chops are excellent.
Ross M. Tacoma, WA

About Ross

Playing guitar is the dream of many kids growing up. I spent hours in my room as a teenager in Florida trying to master the licks of the guitar heroes of the 1970s. I know there are just as many kids, and former kids, trying to do the same here in the 21st century. My mission as your instructor is to help you eliminate much of the wasted time and effort that comes along with learning a musical instrument. In any new endeavor there is always trial and error but I can help reduce the errors and, more importantly, the frustration, by demonstrating the proper techniques and shortcuts necessary to master those flavorful licks on Hendrix’s “All Along the Watchtower” or Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.” And most importantly, you’ll learn to make music… I am a working ...
