Brian G.

Evergreen Park, IL

About Brian

Hello, my name is Brian and I am currently studying my Bachelor's in Music Education at VanderCook College of Music. It is the only college in the world that specializes in specifically Music Education, and has been since 1909. The school teaches us a basic understanding of 17 instruments and voice, while also teaching theory, aural skills, music history, professional ed courses, and includes a large number of various ensembles. Because of this, I'm able to teach some basic concepts on all of the band/orchestra instruments. Personally, I started taking piano lessons in 2000 and started drum se
t lessons in 2002. I've always had a dual musician life after that point, and was apart of the band and jazz band programs from 5th grade until now (sophomore in college). While attending Marist High School, I taught myself guitar, bass guitar, banjo, harmonica, and tin whistle. I expanded my concepts of music and genres, and find myself very knowledgeable of classical, jazz, rock, blues, and pop on piano, and fluent in jazz, blues, rock, Latin, and pop styles on drum set. I am willing to teach any student their musical needs as they prosper through their lives as an artist. I hope to one day teach in a band setting with my degree, offer private lessons, and compose music on the side.

*** Lesson Details ***
For lessons, I'm ready to work on making some music while always having fun. As the lessons progress, I start to expect more from the student regarding retaining knowledge and muscle memory throughout learning their technique and repertoire. This will come with consistent practice. After 3 or 6 months, the beginning students will find themselves recognizing note names, rhythms, meter, melodies and harmonies, and mechanics of their instrument. My goal is to keep the student interested in the music while learning about themselves.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room w/ piano

Basement w/ drum set, guitars, bass, amps, harmonicas

both have seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
I would expect my students to provide themselves with their own instrument but I would provide my own in addition to theirs while teaching, unless there is the sharing of a piano. I can also provide various sheet music.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical, jazz, rock, and blues for piano. I specialize in rudimentary drumming, rock, jazz, and latin for drums/percussion. I believe in making sure the student learns as much as possible about his or her instrument, can improve each day, and ultimately can have fun while playing.

This teacher has many great qualities in the field of music education.

I am learning a great deal from this teacher about the piano and life qualities in general. I have taken the tools I've learned from each lesson to apply in my own practice to develop myself as a musician. I would recommend Brian Goodman to anyone interested in learning about music.

Marissa V.

Alsip, IL

About Marissa

I started my journey with singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When I got to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion. Then I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I am a vocal scientist at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow.

I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education so I was able to learn all the band and orchestral instrumen
ts on top regular classes and voice lessons. I took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for seven years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach in every lesson is ear training and rhythm. I like off switch off every week so not too much time is taken away from the piece we are working on. So one week we would focus on rhythm and the other ear training. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, as well as specific vocal techniques.

While my son has only taken a few lessons with Marissa, we highly value her instruction. She's prepared, focused, and personable. My son isn't only learning to sing a song. He's learning the art of vocal training. It's amazing to hear his development in only 3 lessons so far. Marissa is definitely a great teacher.

Gwendolyn F.

Harvey, IL

About Gwendolyn

I began playing the piano at the ripe old age of 3 on a toy piano I received for Christmas. My parents began my formal lessons the following Spring with a private teacher who stayed with me until I graduated from High School. I was awarded a four year scholarship to the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago by my church to continue my studies. I added Voice to my studies there. I went on to study Orchestration, Conducting and Theory at I.S.N.U., Drama at C.T.C. upon returning from I.S.N.U and began to develop my Production Company in the early 70's. Since then I have produced numerou
s productions showcasing the talents of young and old while I pursued my Corporate career in Administration. My private students range from 5 years to 87 years although currently I specialize in teaching Seniors how to fill their retirement years with music. After running a Senior Community Center for several years, I realized a lack of artistic outlets for Seniors and began encouraging those who attended my Center to take up an instrument. I have had the joy of teaching many Seniors how to surprise their mates with beautiful music after only 6 months of lessons.

As for the younger generation, it is a proven fact that many children do better in school after learning to play an instrument especially the piano. Fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination and physical strength in hands and arms is also enhanced with the study and practice of the piano more so than any other instrument. Many piano students discover other talents and go on to participate in talent shows, school performances, and church pageants. The fun of being able to sit down and make music for your own enjoyment is almost as much fun as playing for the enjoyment of others. I look forward to continuing to share my love of music and the skills to play for yourself with students from Take lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
For Adults we discuss their goals and I come up with a plan that we can both agree on to get them there within reason. For children and all beginning students I start with the basics. We learn the keyboard, and the corresponding notes on the music staff. Treble Clef, and Bass Clef become new words in your vocabulary. After you learn your way around the keyboard and the Music Staff we start on the next important part of music, rhythm. I use a variety of percussion instruments and recorded music to teach the various time signatures depending on the age of the student. This makes it more relevant and enjoyable when they can relate to the music they listen to everyday and pick out the time signatures, By now you can read music even if slowly at first, and the addition of rhythm makes it more fun to play. This usually happens within the first six months for children, and the first three months with Adults. Practice is essential , and I recommend that each student practice for 1/2 hour increments up to 2 hours a day depending on their age. I also use scales to help improve dexterity and strengthen the fingers. Students are recorded to track their progress and for me to listen to their lessons and spot problems for correction. I also work with performers in perfecting their stage presence and audition skills. With today's opportunities to become overnight stars with just a video, you want to maximize your chances in any way you can. As a producer of many shows and concerts, I can help make that happen for you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide the percussion, recorder and recorded material.

Student: Purchase recommended material. Provide your own instrument, and computer or lap top if possible . Internet access not necessary but helpful.

As a private music instructor for the past 15 years, I personally have been granted the opportunity to teach a wide variety of music students. I have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 65. I have taught students from various ethnic and economic backgrounds. I have taught students with various physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. Regardless of the situation, I have always approached each lesson with the idea that every student deserves my best efforts as a teacher. This is because I believe that everyone, regardless of age, cultural heritage, ability, or financial circumstance deserve the opportunity to participate in the best music experiences possible.

I believe that everyone has the ability to learn to play a musical instrument and achieve success on it if they possess the desire to do so. This is because music is a vital part of the human experience. Music has the ability to turn ordinary life experiences into extraordinary ones. Think of everyday events such as: waking up in the morning, commuting to and from work or school, going through the work or school day, going to dinner with a friend or loved one, going to a sporting event, watching a movie or television show, or working out at the gym. Now, picture what these everyday events would be like without the presence of music. Without music, these experiences would be extremely dull and we as human beings would not be able to full appreciate the wonderful moments in our lives.

As a music educator, my promise is to guide my students through the journey of learning to play music so they can experience the joy that it brings into their lives and the lives of others. I promise to help my students realize their full musical potential. I will always treat each student equally with fairness and respect, provide the best possible atmosphere for their growth, and recognize that each student is unique in how they learn and grow.

Dave is an exceptional teacher!

I am a beginner guitar player, Dave has been patient and kind at every lesson. This has been an inspiration and a great help for me to continue learning the guitar. I wanted to find a guitar teacher and not just a guitar player; his approach to teaching is outstanding. He has a love for music and a gift of being an excellent teacher. I always leave my lesson feeling good about my progress and inspired to continue learning to play the guitar. I recommend him for any player at any level; he he teaches good practice habits and is very knowledgeable of music theory and how to teach each person individually. It is rare to find someone knowledgeable in music and apply their knowledge to teaching. I was fortunate to find him!

He's awesome. :)

He makes learning the guitar so comfortable. He makes things easier to review and doesn't mind going over things you may have forgotten. If I could, I would get everyone I know to take lessons from him. I couldn't ask for a better teacher!

In addition to my background in music, I have a degree in Ballet Performance from the Jacobs Schoo

Our family cannot speak highly enough of Miriam-Rose and her talent and teaching ability. She is still, by far, our 10-year-old daughter's favorite IU student violin teacher. Miriam-Rose has such a gift for being an incredibly patient and supportive teacher, yet she is firm and affective in her corrections. Our daughter learned so much in just the short time she was instructed by her. She is such a caring, friendly and fun person with lots of energy, and you can tell she loves what she does by the way she teaches. She will be a blessing to any student she instructs. We have two other daughters that also know her from the ballet world and she is known there as well for her talent, teaching and friendliness, which I think speaks volumes for the individual that she is. She is just an all-around wonderful and talented person who also happens to be a very gifted teacher. Students of any age will learn so much from her! We so appreciate what she has done for our family!!
