Hand drumming is so much more than just beating a drum. There is an essence about it that speaks through your soul. Lessons with me will be unique because we will talk about not only how to play and the fundamental tools needed to begin, but we will learn how to listen to those around us in order to have an all encompassing experience. It will be light, fun, informative, and we will go at whatever pace feels good for you, the student! I've been around drumming and drum circles for over ten years now and have come to have a very individual, impactful style for those around me. I look forward to sharing what I know!
Drumming is one of my life’s deepest passions. I was introduced to the art at The Great Blue Heron Music Festival drum circle. I was captivated by the scene: dozens of people creating impromptu rhythms together, on the spot, giving others sounds to dance to around the massive bonfire, all feeling t

In each piano lesson, we begin with the basics of note-reading, rhythms, and techniques. Then we put these things into practice using a variety of music styles throughout a series of books, as well as individual pieces determined by the teacher and the student according to the student's level, needs, and preferences.
For younger students I generally use a lot of the Faber Piano Adventures books, along with several of their supplemental materials. I am also well-versed in the Bastien Piano Basics books. For teen and adult students, I use the Bastien Adult or Alfreds Adult piano books, and usually try to include the Fundamentals of Piano Theory as well.
I have been teaching music for 21 years, both in private lesson and classroom settings. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Shenandoah University & Conservatory and I have experience teaching all age groups, from age 3 through senior adults, and every age in between. I enjoy teachin

I'm going into my junior year at Cornell where I'm studying pre-med, and believe it or not I really feel like voice lessons with Nancy helped me get here. I love singing, but never had much confidence. I started taking lessons with Nancy my senior year in high school and she helped me sing so much better than I ever thought i could. She was really supportive of my song-writing too. I ended up getting a good part in the school musical (I went to a super competitive high school too) and performing my own songs at a couple of local venues.
Then as part of my college applications she suggested that I include a recording of me performing some French art songs by Claude Debussy. Not that I was a classical singer or was even going to study music seriously in college, but my family is French and I really like the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Nancy introduced me to some cool Debussy settings of Verlaine poems. I thought the songs would be way too hard for me, but with Nancy's help I actually sang them really well and did a good recording that I think helped set me apart in my college applications.
Now when I come back home I always have a few lessons with Nancy. (I still compose and perform my own songs) And don't tell anyone, but she's a lot better than any of the voice teachers at Cornell! Not naming names of course."
