About John
My job is to get your child crazy about the piano. If you have to nag your child to play, something is wrong. The basics are, of course, important, but until you have gotten the child to accept and love the piano as an object of enjoyment, all that practicing will go nowhere.

How do I do it?

I think it's easier to learn the piano if you are having fun, and that means playing music that you like.

You can always choose what you will play in lessons, and lessons are designed around your preferences, and move at a pace comfortable to you. The basics are still taught, but at a pace that your child finds comfortable. The result of this is that I will get your child to go the piano and play by themselves with no nagging.

I have had the complete classical conservatory experience, yet that doesn't mean I expect that of you in any way,
especially kids.

For children, the best start involves games and immediate playing to give the child a taste of the real joy of making music. Reading exercises have their place, but not at the very beginning.

I want you to play a song you know and enjoy your first lesson, and I can easily help you do that.

It's in your interest to play meaningful music, (to you) right away. It is possible for anyone can play music far more complex than what they can read on a page, so my first goal is to get you started playing real songs on your first lesson.

Education: BA University of California, Berkeley. Graduate work at University of Southern California Film School, Trinity College of Music, London.
Emmy Award winner, music direction. Broadway veteran. Recordings with American Symphony Orchestra released Sterling Records.
Advanced Piano lessons using the European tradition, pupil of Tobias Matthay School (London) and Denise Lassimone (Paris)

*** Lesson Details ***
If you're a beginner, I want you to start playing right away, with less emphasis on deciphering sheet music and more on the immediate physical sense of the keyboard. You have to enjoy playing by any means before you are inundated with the page. Reading music follows soon, but not before you can play music you like.
If you're more advanced, I can help you with technical development, and begin to widen your musical senses.

*** Studio Equipment ***
1926 Steinway A

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide Books and Musical Literature. Students must have instrument, electronic or acoustic.

*** Specialties ***
I teach any style of music that you prefer. I also accept students with disabilities and special needs.

John has been teaching my 6 year old daughter for 3 months now and not only has he done a tremendous job gauging her abilities and teaching her but he has made it so much fun she wants to play the piano all the time.

John's biggest strengths are his patience, understanding and seeming endless facility with music. I read music but not fast enough to allow me to play good pieces, so John translates everything into physical movements. This makes it very easy to play interesting music, which makes me want to play more. I think he has shown me how learn, how to refine things so they are satisfying. I highly recommend him as a teacher, for beginners or advanced.

My son is six years old and has been taking piano lessons with John for six months. John is a unique and engaging teacher. His extensive knowledge of music and skill at the keyboard were apparent from the beginning. He can easily demonstrate a multitude of songs and then teach them on the spot. My son is excited to play a "whole song," be it Sponge Bob or Beethoven. John's teach-by-numbers technique appeals to my son's love of numbers and patterns yet he is also quickly learning how to read sheet music. John really is skilled at disguising a lesson on technique or theory as a game. He is goofy while at the same time encouraging and supportive of my son. He keeps it light, fun, and skill appropriate. Since he comes to our home, I also appreciate John's focus on the lesson - he arrives and departs in a timely manner. I highly recommend John as a piano teacher.

Alex has inspired my son to love playing music for the rest of his life. I can't think of a more wonderful gift. His technique in teaching allowed my son to enjoy learning guitar by playing songs he wanted to play. This made him want to practice just for the fun of it! Alex taught my son from the time he was 9 years old until he was 15. The easy going, positive attitude Alex exudes encouraged my son along his journey and made a strong bond and connection between the two of them. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who would like to learn to play guitar to sign up for lessons with Alex!

Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and great with students off every age group! I took lessons from him for five years and my only regrets were not having more time to practice so I could get more out of my lesson times.
During lessons we worked on sight reading, ear training, memorizing chords and scales, different picking and strumming patterns, theory lessons, and anything else that I discovered and wanted to try.

I am a concert pianist with a passion for teaching. From a boarding arts secondary school to prestigious conservatories in both the US and Europe, I have honed my craft, and developed a love for sharing my passion with others. I studied with some of the best teachers in the world at Eastman, the Yale School of Music, the Paris Conservatoire, and the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, in addition to having attended some of the greatest festivals in the world to study with other great pianists and pedagogues. Teaching has always come naturally to me and has felt like a natural extension of my abilities as a performer. I believe it is a necessity to spread what I have learned through teaching.

Years ago I took Guitar Lessons at a local music store ( a very prominent one) as a raw beginner and quickly became frustrated with my lack of progress. Although my teacher was a great player and "very hot" to look at I soon began to feel like I was merely his "practice dummy."... I'd play the chords he showed me, endlessly,... while he seemed to be just practicing his solo playing. ... I then tried On-Line Lessons from various sites which were actually even less helpful and soon just lost interest completely.
A friend of mine said she had taken lessons from a Don DeBold for about 5 years before going off to college and highly recommended him.
I've now been taking lessons from Don for almost 2 years and having a blast ! I've learned how to play along with most of my favorite songs (mainly Blues and Rock) and now I'm learning to play Solo Guitar that needs no accompaniment !
Unlike my first teacher, during many lessons Don barely plays or even has his Strat on his lap because he's busy concentrating on what I'm doing !
He's a stickler yet lots of fun at the same time> I super recommend him as a Guitar and Music Teacher !!! Aneiah J.

About Jennifer
My Philosophy and Teaching Model:
As a teacher, I strive to always put my students first. I work closely with you to help you grow as a musician and as a student. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all teaching model. Instead, I believe in a flexible and customizable teaching method, which means that I create a highly personalized learning experience for each student I work with, no matter their ability level or background. Whether you have been playing for twenty years and want to get back in shape or you first touched the flute last week, I can help you to improve upon your existing skills and help you advance to the next level.
After our first lesson together, I will create a customized curriculum designed specifically to address your needs as a student, and I will work with you to reach milestone goals as you progress th
rough your studies. You will have weekly goals, you will be given regular performance opportunities, you will be trained in music theory, and you will learn pedagogical techniques. I like to teach every student foundational techniques, then build upon their musical interpretation skills, and, for more advanced students, I teach music theory.
I pride myself in giving my students 110%, and I value giving my students a highly personalized private lesson experience. I hope that this philosophy resonates with you as you search for a music mentor, and I encourage you to reach out if you are interested in having private lessons tailored specifically for you.

My experience:
I started playing the flute when I was in fourth grade. My elementary school offered weekly flute classes, then in fifth grade we had weekly orchestra classes. But I loved the flute so much I wanted more. I began private lessons at 10 years old, and I have never looked back. From there, I went on to play in my high school's marching band, concert band, pit orchestra, and symphony orchestra; I played in three different flute choirs and my local youth orchestra outside of school; I earned two performance degrees from the University of North Texas (Bachelor of Music) and Stony Brook University (Master of Music); I have performed with orchestras in the United States, Canada, and Europe; I have played in pit orchestras for musicals and operas; I have competed in solo competitions, I have auditioned for professional orchestras; and I have taught dozens of students of all ages across the country.
I remain eternally grateful to all my generous mentors who have inspired me throughout my career. My mentors include notable flutists Dr. Mary Karen Clardy, Dr. Elizabeth McNutt, Francine Ross Pancost, Dr. James Scott, Terri Sundberg, Jim Walker, and Carol Wincenc.

I have listened to Jennifer as she gave flute lessons to several young beginning students. I observed that she truly cares about her students and invests herself in their progress. She has a creative teaching style, always coming up with new ways to approach the challenges of each individual student. She spends time to discover the students’ goals and structures their lesson plans accordingly. Jennifer is also a good communicator with the parents of younger students, making sure they are informed and inviting them to observe lessons if they wish. I’m sure you’ll find her a delight to work with.

Jacques Gadway is a great teacher of the violin. He quickly adjusted to my pace of learning and realized my skill level which is so important! He has this sense of patience when it came to my learning and also has excellent time management within 1 hour of a lesson, as he can go on and on to lecture about ways to approach a certain technique or to a piece but somehow still finds time to move on and keeps you moving forward. Each lesson with this instructor had me leaving refreshed and inspired for another week of practice, practice, practice!

Hi there! I have been playing piano for about 25 years now, and will be happy to help you with your musical journey whether you're barely starting or continuing with my help! For the first 10 years of my music life, I was completely self taught and developed the ability to play by ear. If you are one of those that has learned that way thus far, I completely understand you and can help you begin to read music! I do play a lot of classical music especially by Chopin, Mozart, Bach, etc. However lately I have been dedicating myself to arranging music from Mexico into a classical piano solo style! It is a dream of mine to be a unique pianist with a very unique "classical" repertoire which will include my virtuous and classical arrangements of said music from Mexico. I got my degree in music composition from CalState Northridge in 2009. Aside f
rom piano, I love dancing salsa, and I also love photography.
