About Michelle

Get to know me a little better by watching my intro video below, or click on the "Ask Michelle A Question" button right next to my picture!
**Right now, I'm only taking new students to start September**

Hi! My name is Michelle. I’m a professional guitar and banjo player, and music teacher! I teach all levels of classical guitar, acoustic guitar, bluegrass and folk guitar. I also specialize in all levels of clawhammer banjo, but also offer 3-finger Scruggs-style bluegrass banjo lessons. I also teach all styles and levels of ukulele from basic strumming patterns to fingerpicking chord melodies.

I cater my lessons to each individual student. I love teaching all levels, so don’t worry if you’ve never picked up an instrument in your life…there’s no such thing as a hopeless case!! I work on building a strong foundation of form a

nd technique in all of my students regardless of level, whether you’re just starting out or are a more experienced player with some bad habits to break or looking to add to your musical toolbox!

My formal training is classical, I have a Bachelor’s degree from Oberlin Conservatory and a Master’s degree from Eastman School of Music, both in classical guitar performance. That being said, I’m a little different than most classically trained teachers, in that I have traveled outside of the classical world to the folk traditions of old-time and bluegrass music, and I am very passionate about this music. I also tour regularly with a folk/Americana trio called Harpeth Rising, which combines both classical and folk traditions into original music (but don't worry, it won't interfere much with teaching!)

My teaching style reflects my combination of influences. My style is fluid, and I work with each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses create a learning environment that is comfortable, relaxed, and ultimately very effective. I also expect my students to schedule regular practicing into their daily routines, which is something I also help my students with.

Thanks for visiting my page!

**Availability notice: As I am a touring musician, my availability is flexible. For online lessons, I may need to reschedule times while I'm on tour. For in person lessons, we may need to reschedule missed lesson while I'm on tour. This will happen infrequently, but I thought I'd give fair warning!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument, and I expect my students to have an instrument of their own. If you need help purchasing an instrument I have 8 years of experience and knowledge of fretted stringed instruments, so I am happy to help advise you once you purchase lessons!

About Candace

I'm a classical violinist, a loving single mother, and a independent business owner for life, health and accident insurance through AFLAC from New York. I am a very accomplished musician performing in many venues and events such as the Long Island String Festival, NYC All County Music Festivals, Valley stream District 13 Music Festival, NY All State Concert, NYSMMA Music competitions, and yes even Carnegie Hall with the NY Metropolitan Youth Principle Orchestra 1st Violin. Ive learned that nothing of value in life comes without blood sweat and tears but it is worth it.

The things I love most in life are my son and providing for our family. On week days, you'll usually find me prospecting potential clients to help with their benefits for employees in any type of weather, for my independent business through AFLAC. On the weekends I like

to take my son with my dogs (sometimes) to the park, museums, and church or teach him the various wonders of life.

About Gary

Hello! My name is Gary. I have been teaching piano since 2008 and am looking to expand my studio outside of my current locale, where I teach around 40 students. I received my Master of Music degree in Performance and Literation at the Eastman School of Music, and my Bachelor of Music degree in Applied Music at the same school.

For parents researching piano lessons for your child / children, please know that the beginning stages of learning are crucial to cultivating good habits and fundamentals down the road. I am fully committed to making sure that your child do just that. Parental involvement is not only welcomed but strongly encouraged - feel free to sit in on your child's lessons!

If you are an adult looking to learn piano, know that I am a very detail-oriented teacher, and will patiently answer whatever questions you might have

. I understand full well that adult students have many other obligations, and I am happy to work around them as long as you are willing to learn.

I have known Gary for a while now, but only recently started taking lessons with him. He is very helpful and professional for every lesson. He answers all my questions and has suggested materials for me to practice in order to improve my playing. I have already learned a lot from the few lessons we have had. I enjoy our lessons and look forward to our next one!

About Xin

I am a professional Horn player. I am currently a student at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester getting my Bachelor's of Music under Professor Peter Kurau.

Horn players can expect to have a unique sound, and I intend to let the student harness that rather than stick to whatever standard of sound is preferred in our community. From my experience, horn players tend to build tension in the jaw, and as a person with TMJ (Temporomandibular joint dysfunction), I know how to recognize these pains and how to release tension and prevent it!

I have been studying classical horn playing for 7 years and have had experiences in various orchestras such as the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Ocala Symphony Orchestra. I am also a part of the National Orchestral Institute + Festival of the University of Maryland, College Park in 2018, a n

ationally-acclaimed summer festival. In addition, I studied the Natural Horn for 2 years, the predecessor to the modern French Horn. Despite having a classical background, I frequently have to play jazz when playing modern compositions and learned how to read lead sheets, so therefore I can bring a multi-faceted way of teaching every day.

I have experience teaching young kids in Baltimore through the OrchKids Summer Program. I was a Brass Intern and taught the horn players and at times the trumpet players. From this experience, I developed patience and an even stronger love for teaching to play the instrument to which I am dedicating my life. I hope that you will consider me in your pursuit of finding a horn teacher for yourself or for your child.

Xin is a superb instructor. She is very patient and has provided me with techniques and tips that have improved my horn skills significantly. She is very knowledgeable and online instruction allows her to provide immediate feedback during the lesson. Though I have a long way to go, the improvements I have experienced have far surpassed my expectations.

I haven't taken lessons from Xin, but as a colleague of hers at the Eastman School of Music, I can honestly say that she is one of the best and most dedicated horn players I've ever met. I have no doubt that Xin's skills as a musician would transfer well to her teaching. You won't go wrong with her.

About Rosie

I am an opera singer and voice teacher. I received my bachelors in vocal performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where I taught secondary lessons through the conservatory. I have performed all over the United States and in England. I am currently studying at The Eastman School of Music as a master's student.
After graduation from Oberlin, I began my private studio in Texas. My weekly lessons numbered around 60. Over the last 4 years, I have taught students with a variety of interests and goals. It is important to me to find the one thing that excites my students, be that a certain song or style, or maybe how to be more comfortable singing in their church choir. In lessons, not only do we work on vocal technique, we focus on what makes their voice unique, special, and all their own. Students will always have a new building block t

o practice each week. My intention is to inspire my students to have a discerning ear and to appreciate all that goes into making a voice work.
My students have been accepted to major college voice programs, as well as participated in competitions and summer programs around the United States.

About Blake

Hello there!

I'm 25 and a graduate of the Eastman School of Music with a degree in Jazz Guitar performance. I currently work full-time as a freelance musician, I play in wedding/corporate bands, jazz groups, hip-hop bands, funk bands, pop bands, original music projects, and I also run a hip-hop/jazz group. I'm a funny, easy-going guy and I want lessons to be fun and inspiring. With that being said I definitely like to set and accomplish realistic goals with my students, cause why not be the best you can be, right?

My teaching style follows the "Music is Easy" mantra. Basically, I look at it as my job to take the intimidation factor out of music, and let it be what it should be, FUN! It's not to say we won't be learning theory, or getting our skills together, but it is to say that we'll be taking all the fancy lingo and breaking it dow

n for you in concrete practical ways.

In terms of what I teach that really runs the gambit, I teach most styles of contemporary guitar playing, and additionally can teach voice as well. I also have taken extensive marketing classes at the University of Rochester, which means that I can offer some key advise on music business and marketing strategies for your band. I also run my own booking agency, so if you want to talk shop on how to get gigs, which avenues of gigs make the most bread, and other things of that nature, I'm your guy as well!

Hope to hear from you and start some fun learning together!

Blake is a seasoned musician with experience in just about every genre imaginable. Whether it's technique, harmony, theory or aural skills, he can explain any seemingly difficult idea in a concise, logical way. With all the knowledge of a conservatory trained guitarist and gigging musician, he's a down to earth teacher who simply loves music and is passionate about sharing it with his students.

Blake is a dedicated teacher who helped me improve right away! I wasn't at all sure what I wanted (or needed) to work on next but he picked up right away what was best for me. So grateful to have worked with him.

About Owen

Here's a bit about myself:

Since 2016, I've been teaching math to high school and elementary students. I've always loved it. With teaching, I feel that I've grown more patient and more thoughtful in my general life. I recommend that anyone with the means try their hand at teaching. It is a particularly rewarding thing in and of itself.

The summer of 2016, I wrote the music, conducted, and acted as musical director for a full-scale musical entitled Get Hooked: A Pirate Musical. Currently, I'm working on a second full-length project, entitled Nuclear Love, that is set to be produced and performed in the spring of 2020.

I also have experience doing rock and jazz gigs on my electric bass. If you or student is also interested in learning these styles, I'd be more than happy to oblige!

My favorite books are Zen and the Art of Motorc

ycle Maintenance, The Giver, Ishmael, 1984, The Chess Garden, Invisible Man, Labyrinths, and Life of Pi.

My favorite quote is "infinity and beyond." Granted, there is no such thing as 'beyond' - unless you're referring to the power set of infinity. Honestly, I just love infinity. I could talk about the infinite hotel and fractals forever (pun noted and kept).

I've been taking French classes for about 5 years now. If you're interested in having a charming conversation in slightly broken French, je suis ton mec!

There are a few things more inspiring to than helping a student triumphantly arrive at a solution. Or watching them nail a big shift that was giving them trouble the week before. Learning anything comes with struggle, with difficulty, and I've certainly had my share of practice frustration. It's important to understand that such an experience is part of the process. I have no doubt that with the right ethic, the right teacher, and a desire to learn, anything can be achieved.

"I started taking flute lessons with Stephanie last September 2016. I have been playing flute since 2011 and play regularly at church. I take a hour long l
esson. I have really enjoyed taking lessons from her. She has also been willing to adjust to my schedule, when she could, when work won’t allow me to make it to my normal lesson.
I had been taking lessons from another flute teacher since 2011 and knew it was time to change. Stephanie has always been able to help me. She is very knowledgeable about all questions and problems I was having on playing the flute or reading music. When questioning a technique she is able to demonstrate it or explain it in a different way so I could understand it. I’ve always had trouble with the high notes and alternate fingering and she definitely has helped me on those. Stephanie personally is a lot more enjoyable than my last teacher. She always seems happy to see me.
I also play Low Flutes and just bought my first Bass Flute. She also plays low flutes."

"Mr. Lin was/is fantastic. I have absolutely no musical background and I left the first class even more excited about learning than when I arrive. Mr. Li

Maybe if I had a teacher Like Mr. Lin when I was in Jr. High, I would have stuck with music. Instead I have waited over 40 years, but it would seem that scoring a teacher like Mr. Lin was worth the wait."

"Highly recommend! I initially only began with the idea of taking 1 month of lessons and now I'm in my 3rd month! Derek caters the lessons to meet my needs

"My son is almost 6 and has been taking guitar lessons with Jordan for a few months now and I am shocked at how much progress my son has made in that short
amount of time...especially considering that my son has ADHD and Tourette's Syndrome, which means that my son does not practice that much because of his limited ability to focus, amongst other things. However, despite all this, Jordan is just so patient and kind and creates a safe and calm environment for son to learn and feel good about his achievements, no matter how small they may be....and I can see that my son is building confidence and feeling good about himself. You can't ask for more that that! In addition, Jordan is very accommodating to schedules...he is always willing to move things around to fit a lesson into our schedule, which is always crazy since we have 3 small kids. A++++"

How to Sing Harmony | Top Tips to Improve Your Singing Technique

By Suzy S.

For many singing styles, learning how to sing harmony lines adds an amazing sense of depth and spice. But if you're used to singing the melody, sometimes recognizing - and sustaining - the harmonies can take some practice. Here are a few tips to help you improve your technique: 1. Learn and memorize intervals. Training your ear to quickly recognize intervals is a great first step to learning how to sing harmony.
