The nuts and bolts of how and why music does what it does. We start from the very beginning, making no assumptions about what is already known, so that a solid foundation can be established. Once done, you can build anything, musically. It helps to know how to read music, play an instrument, and be able to transfer the lesson topics into the "real world" of application, using songs and exercises to illustrate the points.

About Geoff

I am a professional musician with a career spanning 40+ years (touring and studio work), and 30+ years teaching music, including college level classes. What do you want to learn? How far you go is up to you! *** Lesson Details *** BEGINNING students start with the fundamentals, what you must

I took lessons about 40 years ago from other teachers, not sure what I was expecting. However Geoff far exceeded whatever they were. Very knowledgeable, an excellent teacher.

I am a Brazilian guitar player who started by playing blues and rock on the electric guitar, and then moved into Samba, Bossa Nova and fingerstyle on the nylon-string guitar. Today, I play mostly Latin styles and a little bit of Flamenco. I also have a year of conservatory training under my belt, as well as a background in West African percussion, and culminate all of these styles together as a composer.

As a teacher, I cater to your aptitude and your goals and make sure that you are having fun while you grow. That means learning actual repertoire of music that you want to study. Some students want more music theory than others: and that's totally fine! But I like to always have a song as a context to study that theory. Afterall, we want to use theory to actually make music!

About Tomas

My name is Tomas. I am a Brazilian-American polyglot musician and language instructor. I play music and teach English/Portuguese for a living, and have been doing so for the past 7 years! I also learned Spanish and French through music, so I know a lot about those languages and the styles of music

My daughter has expressed a love for music and singing from a very early age. As a parent, I thought she had a beautiful voice and that was confirmed by a good friend of mine who recommended me to Steven. I started Olivia with Steven when she was 9 years old. Through his instruction and guidance her voice has grown tremendously. She was awarded a major role as a 5th grader in her school play and then went on to be the lead as a 6th and 7th grader. She was the youngest student in the history of the school to earn a lead role.

Olivia also auditioned for the Paper Mill Playhouse Summer Conservatory and was accepted for their August Intensive program. I have no doubt that it was Steven's teaching that helped her with her audition that gained her acceptance.

Olivia is now 12 and as a young person, needs to learn how to interpret a song so that she can perform it well. Steven takes the time to teach the MEANING of the words and explains the story that is trying to be told. This was very important for Olivia to learn.

I highly recommend working with Steven. He is a fabulous teacher with a lot of knowledge and insight.

Steve is a great teacher. Encouraging, enthusiastic and pushes you to your limits. I worked with him for several years. Have no hesitation recommending him for voice training and speech training.
Katie
Working with Steve has helped improve almost everything about my voice and performance. He challenges me in every way, including physical and emotional range, technique, language, health, etc. Steve is truly interested in encouraging students to be all-around excellent vocal musicians.

The best instructor for my daughter.

Lipeng is very patient and encouraging for my beginner 11-year-old, using the video format well to demonstrate the songs and watch the student. She has been a good fit for a player who is motivated to improve but can complain a little bit about practicing everyday.
Paul C.
Very first lesson with Lipeng and I enjoyed it so very much. Lipeng encourages to listen to the music and then accentuate the notes to make it music, not to simply play them.

Bass guitar students start with five subjects.

1) Technique is concerned with the development of the physical mechanics involved in playing the instrument.

2) Scales are part of the basic vocabulary and building blocks of the musical language.

3) Intervals are also basic vocabulary of the musical language and progress into chords, and yes, bass players think and play chords.

4) Note reading is not required for every student. It really depends on the student's goals. However, I strongly encourage learning to read musical notation, (more than tablature). Literacy in reading music is analogous to literacy in reading in our English language. Can you imagine how much smaller our world would be if we couldn't read?

5) Songs utilize the skills and concepts of all the previously mentioned subjects and are the goal of studying music. And by the way, they are really fun to play, especially when interacting with other musicians or performing for an audience.

These five ...

"Antonia is a gifted and kind teacher. She gave my 15 year old singing lessons. My daughter was very hesitant at first but after the first day that subsided. Antonia is practical with praise and instilled the realistic aspect of practice and hard work needed to succeed. I saw my daughter go from a kid who would never sing in front of people to one who practiced drills, learned music and performed for the first time in front of an audience with confidence and poise. I cannot thank Antonia enough for her kindness, patience and real approach to teaching."

"It is with great pleasure for me to recommend Jenny as a flute instructor. I am one of her advanced and more mature students (I didn't want to say old lol! ). I graduated with a BM and have taught elementary music for 37 years. Jenny is creative, intuitive and compassionate. She has a thirst for knowledge and a great passion for teaching! She is always searching for new and innovative ways of teaching musical concepts. I am amazed how she is able to be so expressive in the way that she explains how to play expressively! In the short time that I have been taking lessons from Jenny I have experienced great improvement on all levels of my flute playing. Her “bag of tricks” appear to be endless! In my humble opinion I feel Jenny has all the qualities of a master teacher! I always look forward for my lessons with her!"
