I've been in and around music all my life. I started violin at age 5, part of the first generation of Suzuki violinists in the United States. I've loved being a professional violinist and violin teacher for over 30 years! And I've also founded and directed three community music schools in Newburyport, Boston, and Manhattan.

I hold Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Violin Performance, and I'm lucky to have had wonderful experiences during my formal training! In my undergraduate years, I was awarded a full 4-year scholarship for string quartet and chamber music playing, which was invaluabl
e as a real-world training. In graduate school, I was fortunate to learn so much as a Teaching Assistant for undergraduate violin students.

I have also been an innovator in musical education, and I've felt honored to coach numerous already gifted violin teachers who have sought me out to improve their techniques for best teaching practices. From my 30+ years of private violin teaching and observing how children learn, I developed a super fun groundbreaking class in New York City for 2.5 to 5 year old beginners called Crackerjack Kidz! And a few years ago, I wrote a text to accompany young students and their families.

I continuously work to be a master teacher dedicated to the very best methods, using a variety and combination of techniques and strategies tailored to the student's musical success and enjoyment.

My specialties include music-based early childhood development, adult beginners and continuing learners, intermediate and advanced players, and chamber music coaching.

*** Lesson Details ***
While each lesson is different, we always try to spend a little time warming up, making sure we're comfortable and free of tension, reviewing what we've worked on, and layering in new concepts each time. We also learn age appropriate music theory (the "why's" of how music works), we exercise our imaginations, and we learn how to effectively practice.

We learn to think, solve problems, hear the music in our minds, and coordinate our bodies to play beautifully! Along the way we learn skills for life, the joy of accomplishment, and love of ourselves and others!

Hello,
I am Vasiliy M, Boston University School of Music Alumnus (DMA in Composition). We dwell in Boston since Fall 2002; before that time , we lived in New York, where I studied Composition at Mannes College, The New School For Music. I received both BM, and MM degrees from Mannes in 1999, and 2001, respectively. Before an arrival to US, in 1994, I studied Jazz Performance, Electric Bass Major, and Classical Composition, at Moldova State Conservatory, from 1988 to 1993, respectively.
I was raised in the family, where music is an essential part of its daily life; my father, Gr
igoriy, before his retirement, was a military band trombone player, and, quite naturally, I was exposed to music, and encouraged by my parents to learn playing an instrument of my choice, from my early childhood.
My mother, Anisia Kondrat'ievna, possesses both beautiful vocal abilities and perfect pitch , although she has never had a chance to develop her natural gifts any further. But I have heard my mother singing, and these moments remain one of the most touching and impressive musical experiences, that I have ever received, and remember to this very day.
Only after a considerable life experiences, abound of trials and mistakes, at the age of twenty five, I have come to a clear realization, that music remains my greatest passion, and that I would have to become a professional musician. With help and support of friends and colleagues, I have entered Community College in Soroki city, Moldova Republic, where I have studied Choral Conducting for Amateurs. I have graduated from school in May of 1988, having written a few instrumental and vocal compositions of my own, and, quite unexpectedly for myself, was invited, that summer, to visit Moldova State Conservatory, with the prospect of audition for the Composition Major. After the meeting with the Chair of the Department, I was offered an opportunity to be accepted to the Master Degree Program in Composition, provided I will have completed two years of preliminary studies of Music Theory, Music Harmony/Voice Leading, and many other related disciplines.
Why do I bring all of these facts to this Essay? I know for the fact now, that I was not ready for what was awaiting ahead of me, back then. There was no way, that I could cope with the demands of Composition Program curriculum. But I have had love for music, that my parents have implemented in me throughout my childhood; I have had natural abilities, that Heavens supplied me with: and I have had a chance to make my dream a reality, providing I do everything that I will have to, during the following years of struggles and study.
The decision was made, and my studies have begun. I have come through every mistake, defeat, and mind-barriers imaginable, and if it would not be a continuous stream of professional help and support, that I have received from my numerous teachers, mentors, and professors, along the years of study, my goals could never be attained to any modest, but real degree.
Whenever I have a chance to teach, tutor, or assist other musicians with their study, my past experience always reminds me, that any person may experience some difficulties of various nature with the learning material, from time to time, and that those difficulties should be addressed by student's teacher with the highly individual approach, however time-and effort-consuming it may be. Patience and respect, in regard to the students, have become as important aspects of teaching to me, as those of discipline and professionalism.
My studies have come to an end; I see now, that the world of music is an endless entity, for it has no boundaries, and we all have to maintain our further progress, in order to move to our chosen destinations, and to help others with their own advancements.

I would be more than willing to assist my prospective students with their various musical endeavors, and people's willingness to either play music instruments,take voice lessons, or to study Music Theory/ Musicianship disciplines will serve us as a starting point for our work. Through the diligent preliminary talk we will discuss various aspects of interest that my students have developed in relation to music, so we could plan and design our future lessons according to an initial discussion. My job and responsibility will be to make an intelligent assessment of my students' natural abilities for the given subject of study, to create vigorous learning atmosphere during our meetings, and to give my students professional instructions to the best of my humble abilities, for the benefits of their musical , aesthetic, and personal development. I will encourage my students to learn as much as they can, at the given moment, but I will not ever attempt to exceed people's natural capabilities. Participation in Music with love and fun should be as rewarding and valuable to the music amateur, as professional performing career ( with its highly demanding standards) stands for classically trained musicians. During our study sessions, we will work upon the goals and tasks that we have discussed at the beginning of our meetings. My son, Siddarth has been learning Mr.Vasily for about 2 and half years now and I can tell that Mr.Vasily is a great teacher. He's dedicated and expresses a lot of patience when my son forgets or misses his notes. Mr.Vasily also encourages Siddarth to excel by being constructive and not in a negative way, which both my husband and I really appreciate. To excel in anything, it's important to have a good teacher, and we are very happy that our son's learning from one such teacher!

We perform regularly at Berklee, where I'm a professor, and we give concerts and masterclasses all over the Northeast together (most recent was at Cornell). In addition to being the most talented guitarist and musician I have ever had the opportunity to play with, Phil is an astoundingly good teacher. I've played guitar for 8 years and taken private lessons the entire time. Phil has been my teacher for the past 2 years and in that time I have progressed as a musician more than I could have ever imagined. Phil has been the biggest factor in my decision to major in music, due to his unrivaled musical talent, his kind, unassuming, (and funny) demeanor and his seemingly limitless knowledge of the fretboard. Kelly will bring her love of music to every lesson. Her enthusiasm is contagious and very motivating for her students. She is always 100% present in mind, body and soul for her lessons and considers her students an extended family. Kelly tailers her lessons to suit her students age, personality, ability and lifestyle. Kelly will challenge her students and teach them to love and appreciate music. When three different people tell you they have the best piano teacher in the world and it ends up that they all take from the same teacher, you tend to listen. That is how we came to find Kelly Jenkins (Miss Kelly) when we moved to a new area. Her business card said “Gift of Music Piano Lessons” and spoke of developing each child’s individual gift for music. One friend confirmed this claim and commented how her children actually wanted to practice for Miss Kelly. That seemed a bit hard to believe at first. But in the three years we were blessed to learn from Miss Kelly, we found this to be true—not only for my son and daughter that took piano lessons from her, but for my younger children who got excited about music and piano from watching their older siblings and being cared about by Miss Kelly.

Miss Kelly has an excellent knowledge of music—both performance and theory. But more importantly for a teacher, she is able to convey that knowledge in a positive, effectual way. Perhaps this is due in part to being the oldest of ten children. But from whatever source, she is able to teach and correct in a way that leaves the learner feeling empowered, not diminished. She is very friendly, professional, and respectful. We were looking for a teaching experience that was not overly stringent but that would develop a solid musical foundation for a lifetime of music love and service. We are very happy with Miss Kelly’s ability to provide that.

Needless to say, when Miss Kelly moved, we were sad to see her go. Yet we are still able to maintain a friendship—even across the country. We have even been blessed to hire her, on occasion, as a consultant when music questions have arisen that we knew she could help with.

In short, we highly recommend Miss Kelly.

I met Kelly Jenkins several years ago when she became my children's piano teacher. For several years she taught my three youngest children--who had very different needs and interests--with skill, compassion, and enthusiasm. My youngest was a beginning piano student, my son was slightly more advanced but quirky with special needs, and my older teen daughter was a singer who wanted to improve her understanding of music theory and challenge herself through piano study.

One of Kelly's finest traits is her ability to understand, respect, and nurture individuals based on their needs and interests. She didn't teach piano--she taught children. She didn't come with a specific set of piano books that each child needed to work through. She came with many ideas, a listening ear, and positive reinforcement. My children not only liked Kelly, they LOVED her and knew she loved them back.

Kelly helped my children select music that interested yet challenged them. She organized recitals, then thoroughly prepared my children so they had successful performing experiences. This included teaching them how to bow, giving them opportunities to perform in the recital location before the audience arrived, and offering lavish praise afterwards. She also gave my children vision by exposing them to more advanced students, including professional musicians.

Over the years that Kelly came to our home (did I mention she came to us?! What a blessing for me, a busy mom!), she was always professional and friendly. She was on time and rarely cancelled lessons. If she needed to cancel, she did so ahead of time and offered alternate arrangements. She kept me apprised of my children's progress, or lack thereof, so I could better support their efforts.

Kelly went beyond being a piano teacher. She was a MUSICAL MENTOR for my children. She sought to understand, respect, and nurture each child based on his or her need, skills, and interests. For the children she teaches, Kelly would provide safe opportunities for individual growth and success, and encourage lots of fun in the process.

FYI--I met Kelly because of her piano skills, but her interests and skills are wide and varied: travel, culture, cooking, home improvement, jewelry making, dance, web design, small business development, retail, and child care. She has a keen and curious mind and is open to new experiences.
