Ear training, or aural skills, includes abilities such as identification of scales, chords, intervals, as well as harmonic dictation. The goal is to be able to identify these musical sounds, only using the sense of hearing. This skill is valuable for all levels of students, and for every instrument, but is especially helpful for intermediate students, planning to major in music, prior to attending university, as it is typically a required core curriculum for all music majors.

If so desired, these lessons can extend beyond just ear training and cover other aspects of music theory and aural skills, including sightsinging, understanding solfege (Do-Re-Mi), sightreading, etc. I customize all lessons to my student's goals, experience level and interests.

Music theory is a practice best understood from the ground up. Depending on where you are, we'll start with the foundations (scales, chords, key signatures, etc), then on to explore voice leading and part writing, and explore techniques used in modern popular and classical music.

I believe it's important for students and teachers to work together based on the students ambitions. Once the basics are established (or already known), we'll explore classical, jazz, rock, or any other genre the student is interested in.

About Jon

I'm a professional performer, educator, and recording artist. I received my Masters in Music from New Mexico State University, and my BA and BME from the College of Wooster in Ohio. Students can expect to improve their technique and performing repertoire within a matter of weeks. We will collabo

I have known Joshua for several years and have observed first hand the relationship he has with his students. He cares! Gracias para tu paciencia!

Doctor Joshua has been instructing my 2 grandsons in piano at their home for many years. They are both excellent pianists, especially the 14 year old. Doctor Joshua lets them choose modern songs relevant to them and has written music for them to play. He also has recitals for his students and has had them play at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet pre-show. Their confidence has soared. I have been at my son’s home many times when my grandsons are taking their lessons and am very impressed at how Doctor Joshua is with both of them, he is very encouraging.

"Dr. D lives and breathes music. If you’re a musician with even the smallest kindling of desire to learn, he will light a fire under you and you will grow as an artist, musician, and writer. I’ve worked with him mostly in a band setting where he worked as our band director. I’ve also witnessed his vocal lesson work first hand with a friend of mine. Within a year the student he was was working with went from being a beginner with no theory knowledge to a jazzy sort of Gene Autry with a style built on a foundation of music theory. With his encouragement, raw enthusiasm, and know-how she gained what seemed like a lifetime of music knowledge, performing ability, and confidence in the matter of a year. I’ve also worked with Dr. D in a recording and producing setting. He has the equipment and the ability to make professional and marketable recordings, and his artistic input on these recordings has been invaluable. If I wasn’t touring all the time, I’d be working with him every chance I got. I still do whenever I make it back to Austin. Dr. D is quickly becoming an essential figure in the live music capital of the world."

While Glee helped make choir groups "cool" again, The Sing Off has brought a cappella singing to the spotlight.  This is truly a battle of the voices, as per …
