Hi, I'm Heather. I’m from a small town in Harford County, MD, called Abingdon. It’s really close to Baltimore, MD which is about 15 minutes away from Abingdon. I live with my husband and two bunnies. I’m an R.N. with a bachelors degree in Nursing and 16 years of training in music by masters of Curtis Institute, Julliard, and Peabody Conservatory. I have been teaching piano for over 12 years. In 2001, I had a diversion of career from nursing and I absolutely fell in love with the idea of teaching piano and I started giving piano lessons. I love playing my Masan & Hamlin grand piano for personal pleasure, and I spend a lot of time practicing for different occasions. My Specialties: My passion is classical music, however, I realize that the students'€™ interests are diverse, so, I teach pieces they request which include easy fun Pop Music, Hymns, Boogie, Rock, Country and other contemporary pieces.
My Education: At an early age, I took a great interest in music, so my older sister who is four years older than I taught me what she learned in her piano lessons. She also taught me music theory. At the age of 12-14 my parents sent me to private piano lessons. My piano teacher at that time eventually told me that I needed to find a new teacher because she had taught me all she knew. After that, I approached a well known Julliard Master in town. He took me on as a student after he heard me play the Beethoven'€™s Pathetique Sonata in C minor. I learned through Arthur Fiddler'€™s comment made in the newspaper that Mr. Chang, my teacher, in his opinion was the best piano teacher in Hawaii. Under Mr. Chang’s tutelage, I was exposed to a variety of classical pieces written by famous composers of the 15th to 18th centuries. At the age of 14, I made my first piano recital debut. My piano teacher was impressed with my talent and expressed his wish for me to pursue music and enter into Julliard. But, my parents being immigrants from Korea, did not think it was a good choice of career. So, I went into nursing instead, much to the consternation of my piano teacher. In 2001, I made a career change and found my passion for music revived again. I started teaching piano as well as taking Music Theory courses at a community college and taking lessons from a Julliard- Peabody master as well lessons from a Curtis Institute master. I continue taking piano lesson even now while I give piano lessons to beginner and intermediate students.

*** Lesson Details ***
In my piano studio, besides just learning to actually play the piano, students will engage in flashcard drills, writing work, and other activities to strengthen their overall knowledge of music. This will prepare them well for continued study in piano, for playing other instruments or singing, and for enjoying music in general. As an incentive to practice, our studio awards each week piano dollars for the time each student practices during the week. At the end of the year, we have an auction that the children could participate in using their piano dollars to purchase items.

In first the lesson the concepts stressed include:
1. Hand position and posture at the piano.
2. Right hand , left hand, and how the fingers are numbered.
3. Direction on the keyboard
4. The pattern of keys on the key board

In the first year of piano study, the concepts covered are:
1. Theory: identify steps, skips, and repeats; write and recognize 2nd -5ths intervals; sharp and flat signs; identify key signatures
2. Rhythms: whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, and dotted notes.
3. Technique: correct hand position; curved fingers, down –up wrist for phrasing, legato/staccato touch, penta scales; major chords and voicing (balance of hands) 5-finger melodies; single line melodies divided between hands; note-against-note playing, some melody/chord playing.
4. Repertoire: A Dozen A Day by Edna-Mae Burmae Books; Five-finger melodies by Faber Faber; Famous & Fun Pop Books by Carol Matz ; Boogie, Rock & Country Level 1 by James Bastien; Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano Course Lesson Book Level One for adult beginners.

In addition to lessons each student is required to participate in an annual piano recital to give them experience and confidence in performance.

I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I received my D.M.A. at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. Through my experiences both as a student and as a teacher, I un
derstand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

Jonathan is the best violin teacher! My son had his first lesson today and he absolutely loved it. Very quickly Jonathan was able to find my son's strengths and the areas that he needs to work on. Not a minute was wasted during the lesson, at the same time he took his time to explain everything in detail. I can tell he can work with any level student. I began my classical training in both piano and harp at a young age. As I progressed, I began studying piano, music theory, music history, and collaborative piano at the Pennsylvania Academy of Music for five years. I then earned my Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance with a Harp Minor at Houghton College 'Greatbatch School of Music' in New York where I taught both instruments and worked as an accompanist. After graduating, I moved to North Carolina where I taught over 60 students ages 4-65 at Cary School of Music for three years.

Following, I relocated to Los Angeles where I spent three years working as a performing musician and music teacher through the Royal Music Conservatory and MTLA. While teaching privately, I began working full time as a music teacher at the Help Group School for Autism where I also maintained a position as the charity event choir director...performing with various artists such as the rapper 'Common' and former Temptations singer 'Luis Price.'

While most of my training is in the Classical field, I have a strong passion for contemporary music as well. I believe that both piano and harp have the ability to reach many different audiences. As a teacher, I believe in giving my students a strong Classical foundation while using the technique and theory to delve into other styles of music such as jazz and contemporary pop/alternative. With this instruction, each student will be able to find what music inspires him/her while having the skills and technique to further the chosen style.

Perfect first session. Michael adapted to Rory's deep understanding of music theory but total lack of knowledge of the bass. He was thoughtful, patient, and adaptive introducing the bass and providing practice suggestions to Rory. I recommend Michael in the highest terms as an instructor for beginners and knowing his vast education and experience in the bass I must assume this travels though the entire range of students - beginner to advanced. We look forward to the next lesson.

From 2013-2015 I taught group music classes through Soli Encore in Orange County, CA, in violin, guitar and K-2 creative music (Orff-based instruction with singing, xylophone, hand percussion and flutophone). The last two years of that position I managed the entire program including hiring teachers, writing curriculum, and teaching classes myself. I had also consistently held private violin, viola, and guitar students. In both violin and viola I saw my students move up chairs in their orchestras and excel in local, district and state honor orchestras. I sent students to great schools for music like Orange County School of the Arts and Ne
w England Conservatory.

As for my performance career, I have committed to always being a member of an orchestra, band or performing group of some sort because it's my passion and I endeavor to teach from personal experience. Over my last ten years in SoCal I performed with several groups including the Blackbird Music Project, Montage Orchestra and Symphony Irvine. My last year concluded my position as Principal viola of the Dana Point Symphony for four seasons. I was in two bands during my college years. With Galanis I was a part of several Western U.S. tours that took us through California, Arizona, Utah, Idaho and Montana. I have had the privilege of working with artists such as violinist Anne Marie Calhoun, Jimmy Hopper, Andy Grammer and Stevie Nicks. Some of the larger productions I have been a part of include appearances on TV shows like Melrose Place and the Bachelorette, and performances for former President G.W. Bush and at the Governor's Ball for the Academy Awards.

My performance career continues to grow here on the East Coast, where I have lived since August 2015. I have been a member of the McLean Orchestra and have been added to rosters for the Alexandria Symphony, Arlington Philharmonic and Washington Sinfonietta. I currently hold a Bachelor's of Music in Viola Performance from Azusa Pacific University where I studied with Robert Becker, founder of the American String Quartet with a BM and MM in Viola Performance from Juilliard. I am now enrolled as a graduate assistant for my Master's of Music in Viola Performance at the University of Delaware.

When I'm not making music I'm running far, studying nutrition, cooking or spending time with my beloved friends and family!

New York-born Flutist Amanda Dame is a versatile performer active as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including first-place in the Best Mozart Performance category of the global Great Composer Competition Series, as well as first place awards in the 2014 Central Ohio Flute Association Young Artist Competition, the 2013 Rochester Flute Association Emerging Artist Competition, the 2012 Donald E. Webster Scholarship Competition, and the 2012 Stefan Scholarship Competition. In 2015, Dame was invited to participate in the Third International Maxence Larrieu Flute Competition, taking place in Nice, France, and was one of only three flutists invited from the United States.

Dame is currently a substitute flutist with the Canton and Firelands Symphonies. During her studies at the Oberlin
Conservatory of Music, she was a rotating principal of the Oberlin Orchestra, and performed in the orchestra at Chicago Symphony Center as a part of their 150th-Anniversary tour. At Oberlin, Dame appeared frequently as an ensemble-member for faculty concerto recordings. She has appeared in the Schikele Bassoon Concerto and the Augusta Reed Thomas Bassoon Concerto released on the Oberlin and Naxos labels on the album Full Moon in the City. She has also appeared in recordings of the Carter Flute Concerto and the Trigos Guitar Concerto No. 1 (forthcoming releases). In addition to her orchestral opportunities at Oberlin, Dame has attended the Pierre Monteux School and Festival, the Miami Summer Music Festival, and the Bach Institute at Emmanuel Music.

To supplement her love for performing, Dame has also been active in the field of Arts Administration. Co-founder of the Oberlin Flute Association, Dame spent two years bringing prominent flute artists to Oberlin. This included advertising in the Cleveland area, managing a strict budget, and organizing all details of the artists' visits. She also worked at the Oberlin Concert Productions office as assistant director and program editor, and was administrative assistant with Oberlin Conservatory Summer Programs. She is currently a staff member in the Peabody Career Services office, providing professional development support for students at Peabody.

Dame has recently graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she received a Bachelor of Music in flute performance and a Bachelor of Arts in biology as a part of the college’s double-degree program. She is currently pursuing a Master of Music at the Peabody Conservatory, under the guidance of Marina Piccinini.

She encourages, she finds analogies to explain, she is more patient with me then I am with myself. She also explains the terms, gives tips on how to read the notes. She is able to identify the mistakes and give the right advice on how to improve. Her advice on how to practice made all the difference for me. I started with a giant cookie bite sized embouchure and within a few lessons I have managed to make it smaller thanks to her instructions. There is hope for me afterall.
Looking forward to playing a duet with her without me making a mess. Thank you Amanda!

Amanda is an outstanding teacher. She inspires and challenges me to play pieces I did not think I could play. She is able to take difficult passages and break them down step my step so I can learn how to play them properly. My son, Dade has been taking piano lessons with SooJi for four years now and unfortunately we have to stop as she moved to a new city. She is an absolutely gifted and exceptionally talented pianist and teacher. As a parent, I am engaged in every lesson, observing what my son is learning. Even if when he is tired, not fully prepared, SooJi never stops being kind to him. She always gives helpful tips for effective practice and progress. My son never stops smiling and laughing. Sometimes I join the lesson and also learn stuff and both my and my son just learn tons of new stuff from her lesson. Under SooJi's coaching, my son already finished two solo recitals, 40 minutes each. It is a REAL progress and I was really proud of my son, as he didn't know anything about music before meeting SooJi, and now he is able to play simple songs for people without getting nervous!
I also teach so I know this for sure. Teaching is a natural gift. Someone can be really good at something but might not be good at teaching. SooJi is a total gifted teacher. She knows what to teach, how to teach, what to use, how to deal with students and conflicts, and she is able to solve problems that my son had during practice. Whenever she says something, my son is like " now I got it!" and he is so happy learning from her.
She is an exceptional talent in performing piano as well. I asked her to play in my and my wife's wedding few weeks ago and she played few songs and it was absolutely gorgeous. I am just really sad and disappointed that she is not able to teach him anymore and I can not have fun with them again. But I know she will be literally the best piano teacher ever in whatever years from now. When you see her, you will clearly feel this: she is very professional, yet kind and super funny and silly. She is super talented, yet so humble. She is really good with any kinds of students, she just knows how to treat them differently.
I can see SooJi has a natural gift of teaching, and I do hope she comes back and teach my son again later. Thanks for the four years of teaching SooJi! We love you dear!

She was an outstanding teacher with an exceptional talent in piano performance and teaching. She is very knowledgeable. She stayed focused and she is passionate about the pieces and demonstrated a lot on the pieces. I can also tell she is a very good pianist because she was able to illustrate everything I had to know in such a short amount of time. Another thing I really appreciated was how quickly and fully she was able to communicate with me about the lesson times and any questions I had for playing. I am so thankful for her encouragement, smile, jokes, and all the tips she gave me in the lesson. She is a fantastic teacher for sure, and I definitely recommend her. She surely has a gift of teaching.

Dear SooJi,

You asked for my thoughts on you as a teacher, but I don't think I'll be able to explain those very easily. Your impact on my life is more than I can explain or show. Of all the things I've learned from you, I consider Korean to be of a lesser importance than the life lessons, friendship, and communication skills you've taught me, whether on purpose or not. I'm thankful for everything you've done for me. I'll never forget how understanding and compassionate you are, and I can only hope to grow up and be half the person you are now. In all honesty, you're the best teacher I've ever had, and now I can understand what people mean when they say "This teacher shaped who I am today" and I'll never forget on stop being thankful to them.

I am a performer, administrator, and arts advocate with an aim to inspire audiences in unconventional ways. A Native of Miami, Florida, I started my musical studies at the age of 12 and has been an active member of the Miami and Baltimore music scenes ever since. Since coming to Baltimore to study at the Peabody Conservatory in 2011, I have had the opportunity to perform with nearly every large ensemble in the school and have also performed in Yale's Norfolk Summer Music Festival, as faculty at the New York Summer Music festival during my time studying in conservatory, and with the Occasional Symphony. I regularly perform in the Baltimore/DC metro area as a freelance oboist and member of the contemporary chamber orchestra, Mind on Fire. I also have performed with the Columbia Orchestra, Classical Revolution Baltimore, and many other estee
med local organizations. I have also been featured as a woodwind clinician in Baltimore County and Howard County public schools classrooms and have been the oboe adjudicator for the middle and high school division of the Howard County Solo & Ensembles for the past three years.

I graduated from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University with a Masters in Oboe Performance in 2016. I additionally hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance as well as a Teaching Certificate from the Peabody Conservatory. During my time at Peabody, I studied under Jane Marvine, English Horn of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

I am currently the Operations Manager with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. Previously, I have held administrative positions with cultural organizations such as the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and the New York Philharmonic. I have been on both sides of the music industry and classroom, so I know what it takes to become a professional musician, and take a nuanced pedagogical approach to help each student achieve their goals in a way that suits them individually - no two students are the same! I believe each student should have a strong fundamental layer in technique and understanding of music theory, but should also focus on having fun while playing music, otherwise, what is the point?
