I have been playing drums for over 47 years. For 16 years I played and performed professionally with my band Black Widow USA. We toured the US several times in support of our two internationally released CDs. For about 30 years of my time behind a drum set I had given drum lessons on and off. But because of my super strong passion for the drums and my desire to share my knowledge of the instrument I decided to start teaching on a more regular basis about four years ago. Several of my first regular students have now gone on to do very well themselves. Drumming in bands of their own. Although I can teach most styles of drumming I have been a die hard rock and roller most of my life. With my main influences on the instrument being Carmine Appice, Don Brewer from Grand Funk, John Bonham, Ian Paice from Deep Purple and for double bass Tommy Al
dridge. So I really specialize in the old rock and roll, classic rock, hard rock and metal from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, all the way up to today's rock, metal and pop music. I believe my years of experience are valuable in relating to each students musical interests ,desires and accomplishments on the drums. After my original band Black Widow decided to go on a long break several years ago I was offered a drumming position in a local classic rock and metal cover band. So besides teaching I have continued to satisfy my love for playing drums and performing with that band. Which gigs out on a regular monthly bases.
*** Lesson Details ***
I make sure that I find out from the get go what each and every new student likes musically and what they want to learn and how far they want to go on the drums. Then I try to tailor all the lessons to each students interests and abilities. Making sure that it's fun for them in the process. This can't be work or a chore or they won't stick with it. But I will say I do believe that every beginning student who has NEVER sat behind a kit before should know and start with the fundamentals ( the building blocks so to speak) of drumming such as holding the sticks, proper stick control and technique, and how to execute some important basic rudiments and keep good time. Also I think learning to read some drum notation is important so you know and understand what you are playing when you play it, but can teach by ear also. I can also teach double bass technique if a student is interested in that.

Works space w/two drum sets, one double-bass and one single. Instruction material (books, CDs, videos). Seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
If necessary to travel to a students home, they should have a drum kit there or at least a practice pad to get started on. I will bring sticks, a metronome if needed and the necessary instruction books for the lessons. Also willing to travel to a students home if they are just getting started and need help setting up their kit or need help tuning the drums.

Mostly specialize in beginner to intermediate ages 7 and up teaching rock ( which includes old rock and roll from the 50's, blues), classic rock ( 60's and 70's) , hard rock and metal from the 80's all the way up to today's rock, pop and metal music. This is our first Drum instructor and we are thrilled with Thomas. He is patient, kind, and enthusiastic about teaching. His approach is positive in nature, meeting the student where they are at, takes their interest as the lead, and starts teaching there. My 11 year old son really likes him too! We go to our 4th lesson this afternoon.

These lessons were great. Regarding drums, I was an absolute beginner, and Tommy's lessons turned out to be an excellent jump-start. I used to play keyboards and guitars before, and I enjoy picking up by ear rather than reading notation, so I really liked informal and 'non-notational' way the lessons went. There was no hard notation drill, and yet Tommy had covered most rudiments, basic techniques, and patterns needed to rock in about 10 lessons. I'd recommend this for anyone who doesn't know how to hold sticks but want to get introduced into rock drumming.

I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I have studied with Wanchi Huang at James Madison University for six years. At JMU, I earned a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music, both in violin performance. I received my D.M.A. at Catholic University of America, studying with Jody Gatwood. When I was a student at JMU, I taught several students privately. The students ranged from retirees to JMU faculty and students to adolescents. I am now teaching at Baltimore Talent Education Center, where I teach violin in small groups and individual lessons. The students at BTEC range from pre- kindergarden through high school. I also have festival experience. I have been a student at Brevard Music Center, Heifetz International Music Institute, BayView Music Festival, and I was a Teaching Fellow at Interlochen Arts Camp. derstand that every student is a little bit different. Every student has different strengths and weaknesses. Every student has a different learning style. Every student has a different way of understanding things, a different way of processing information, and a different personality all together. It will be my job as a teacher to get to know each student individually and use my teaching methods to teach the student how to play the violin and help him or her to reach his or her goals.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a laid-back person. I am easy-going, enthusiastic about violin playing and about teaching and learning music, and I am very patient with my students as well. However, I am also very demanding. I explain and demonstrate objectives in a very precise way, and I demand a lot of detailed work from my students, inside and outside the lesson. I explain specifically what I want the student to do. By the end of every lesson, the student will have specific things to work on for next time. I expect each student to make practicing a habit, and practice regularly what has been discussed in the lesson. I try to make the lessons as pleasant and as laid-back as possible. But I become more firm, serious, and strict when a student either is not making an effort or does not practice enough outside the lesson.
I start students off with the Suzuki method. We work on techniques to hold the violin properly, hold the bow properly, and get a decent sound out of the violin, without too much physical tension. A student begins by learning to play by ear. After he or she is comfortable playing by ear, we associate the notes that the student hears and plays on the violin with written notes on a page.
We also work with the Paul Roland methods so that the student can learn the violin in a basic, rudimentary way. It involves a lot of repetitive patterns, back and forth motions that are slow and round, and avoiding excessive tension. This will give the student the tools that he or she needs to learn how to play the violin in a short period of time.
In three to six months, a student who is a beginner will be able to hold the violin and bow comfortably, create a decent sound on the violin, and play the Twinkle Variations, and maybe a few other songs.
If the student has played violin before, then in three to six months, he or she will have had some rehabilitation to get rid of tension and force, overcome some bad habits he or she may have developed, and review the fundamentals of violin playing. I will improve the student's approach to the violin, and by the end of the three to six months, he or she will have a better idea on how to practice and play the violin.

I will expect the student to have a violin, rosin, and a pencil.

*** Specialties ***
Suzuki Method- a starting point, particularly for kids, but for people of all ages. It is a good way to begin learning the violin by playing by ear, developing a strong, clear tone, and bringing out one's individuality through his/her musical development and his/her ability to be expressive.

In a matter of time, I want the student to get used to reading music, in addition to playing by ear. This can be done through the pieces in the Suzuki method or through other music.

Eventually, I take the student off of the Suzuki method and work with him or her on classical repertoire.

My son has been learning violin lessons from Jonathan since the summer of 2014 when he was 10. We are so fortunate to find Jonathan at takelessons.com and very happy and grateful to have him as a private tutor throughout the years. Jonathan is a brilliant musician and passionate violinist, very professional. He is really good at teaching, very patient and detailed. Whenever my son made a mistake, he would immediately point it out and show him the right way to do it and have him practice time and time again until he got it right. He would also write notes on my son’s music sheet to remind him things he needs to pay attention to during his practice at home. Jonathan also organizes recitals regularly for all his students to gather together and play in a concert like atmosphere and interact and learn from each other, which is really a wonderful experience. Jonathan can be reached easily by text message, email or phone and we have never run into any problem rescheduling a lesson or anything else. I highly recommend Jonathan for anyone who wants to learn violin or music in general.

He going to be angry when you make a mistake and he is not patience. I don’t recommend him for beginners students or even advanced students. Even the price is kind of cheap but it wasn’t worth it.

It is important that I address attitude, emotion and state of mind:

Please know that I am extremely generous and kind. I assure you that I am highly confident in my abilities and work. Integrity and value are a part of who I am as an artist, coach and person and you will come to find this. If I don’t know something, I say it.

I offer all my insight and expertise to my students. That is why I think it is important to understand and possibly workout and finally accept what I am asking to build a successful working relationship.

I absolutely understand and appreciate that we are all coming from somewhere and with that said please keep in mind:

Learn to not judge yourself while you are sorting out your technique. Be completely open to reworking every aspect if necessary without feeling defeated. Reserve judgment and do not assume something is not for you regarding technique if you have not fully mastered it yet in application and comprehension.

That type of opinion is reserved for professionals who have both mastered and understand the technique only. Until then it is important to accept that you need to keep working and stay humble and positive.

***Your emotional state of mind and attitude absolutely matters. Do not underestimate the influence of your mind on your body. We are not aiming for perfectionism, we are aiming for personal excellence!***
Part of that is being willing to try the way I am asking because and trusting it is only for your benefit. You don’t have to come here perfect by any means, please don’t think this. You just have to be in reasonable enough shape to work productively.

Perfectionism leads to disappointment and limited thinking that undermines progress. You must be open, resourceful, adventurous and experimental in your singing. Perfectionism will fail you in this regard. I am a recovering perfectionist so I know:)

You cannot offer your most excellent work if you are resistant, fearful or emotionally (exhausted) nor prepared for working honestly due to past discouragement or carrying unrealistic expectations that typically stem from not being willing to invest the time, effort, or financial means in yourself. No one can help you if these factors are put between us and things always surface if they haven’t yet. Be prepared. Know that we are all facing the same issues more or less in this journey.

That is why I suggest making amends with any and all of these factors before working with me because they will influence the outcome of our work.

Some I am sure will immediately disagree with what I am say and decide that this is not what they need or in actuality really want to give (themselves truly), and find another coach who agrees with what they are willing to do, even if that severely limits their growth.

This is absolutely my professional opinion and I believe it is true for everyone. I know what I am saying can sound overwhelming, but it is not. Remove the ego from the equation. It is actually realistic and practical. I am telling you that you are absolutely in control of your outcome.

My hope is that students will come to terms with the reality of what is necessary to finding success in their singing first and worry about whatever is next last and not attempt to displace their end of the deal.

Start with very small, manageable steps and say yes to what you are saying no to or battling in your mind. That is actually more exhausting than the work itself and needs to be left at the door when we work.

Other professionals might agree with you or say differently about what I have expressed to save your business. Finding others who agree doesn’t make it true. Confronting things honestly is a choice that the teacher must make as well as the student.

I say this because it is the truth and it is a disservice to you as a singer and the necessary foundation to the relationship to go into it any other way.
It is already difficult enough to find direction when we are being lead without honesty and it must begin with us.

This is exactly what every student needs to realize because this is a tremendous part of what is holding them back. If you have understood what I am saying, it is actually a very empowering message.

It might even be all that you needed to hear to find a real path to success. :)

If you acknowledge what I stated above and are willing to commit to the work, I can assure you that I promise to do my part and help you move toward success in your lessons.

If you fully follow my guidance in your mind and heart, you will eventually find your way. I am open to what a student says they initially need, but that said I tend to show my students the light eventually on whether something is truly helping or hurting. I have good instincts on exactly what a person is ready to take on, but it’s typically a bit more than what they might want to do. That is because the mind is often behind the body. I have to be several steps ahead to keep the work progressive.

I always tell my students that I will only teach you what you need, not what you want, expect to learn or already know. You should be interested in this too. Please allow me to do this. I focus on fixing the weakness that we prefer to avoid and incorporating our strengths.

I understand that what I am saying is challenging for most students because it is so often the glaringly obvious aspects of our technique that we have been avoiding and battling before we walked through the door.

Know that I have faith in you and I want you to find faith in yourself because that is more empowering and valuable than millions of people believing in you. You don’t need that, you need belief in self only.

Believing in yourself with the mindset as worthy to go forward is what will help you get through the difficulties and challenges with confidence and assurance. Problems that will arise and cannot be avoided.

You will see that you will start to be led in a much different direction just by changing your thinking.

If anything I said makes you feel nervous, overwhelmed or uncomfortable because it does not align with what you were expecting, regardless of being a beginner or a professional then I say just confront it, own it for what it is and accept it because you are now ready to work at an elevated capacity.

Christine’s extensive experience and knowledge as a professional adult contemporary vocal artist includes a highly in-depth working understanding of a range of various styles and specialties in vocal intonation that is truly hard to match by other professionals in the field.

This along with her continuous education (over twenty years) and dedication to the authentic Italian traditions of bel canto has allowed for her to develop an approach that can extended into all legitimate styles of singing. Her personal approach to the voice is beyond comparison, and can only be described as world class.

She has a phenomenal ear and can make rapid and highly accurate assessments of technical issues in a very brief sitting. Christine is exceptional at explaining vocal pedagogy and directing students on how to make corrections for themselves.

Christine is a dramatic coloratura soprano and is very confident and experienced with large instruments (that are more difficult to train for various reasons and require more specialized training). Having an extremely rare and large voice herself has given her invaluable insight toward fully understanding all other voice types and the discipline necessary to achieve efficient technique.

These are the basics of support, but often times very apparently neglected because most trained singers/teachers from even the highest institutions do not understand how it works or do it effectively themselves. Christine clearly demonstrates and explains how this concept functions and her refinement of it is by far not common knowledge.

Other concepts include sustaining an open throat, creating a natural lifted and open internal space for better mix using the head voice and easier support, legitimate dynamics directed from the body and compressed air, anchoring the body to maintain the larynx low;

Various placement techniques, air that can rebound using breath direction and not from using the larynx inappropriately, centering the voice/cut internally by aligning the horizontal (mask) and vertical planes (chest, back of head, top of head and spine) support and placement that function together, developing a mixed middle sound that passes easily into low and high registers and broadens range; articulation free from the jaw and using tongue and other articulators as well as using breath direction to assist, posture that is conducive for support and keeps the body open and functional;

Various artistic and performance techniques, musical interpretation appropriate to context, time period and style, aligning the voice and body/acting to come across accurately in our portrayals and the process behind this, memorization techniques, execution of timing for expressive reasons and ways to think about timing that doesn’t conflict with the natural structure of a song, but allows for flexibility in phrasing, phrasal development and song development.

Piano that is geared exclusively toward vocalists and adult students only:

Teaching piano to vocalist is something I hold dear to my heart because I understand the difficulties and disadvantage as a vocal student to not be able to play and learn your rep on your own. I did not learn how to read music until I was in music school as a young adult. I believe reading music properly is just as important as learning Latin based foreign languages for success in opera. It has been my professional experience that it is often grossly overlooked.

I also offer working with adults students who are only interested in piano starting at age 20.

Christine is also a highly sought out piano instructor for her ability to establish an exceptional foundation in beginning piano students and those who wish to continue their studies and build upon the fundamentals. She specializes in reading skills and excellent technique.

She teaches Russian technique, which allows for flexibility, strength and tonal beauty of musical lines. This technique can be applied to all styles of playing piano such as pop, jazz and is not limited to just the classical repertoire.

What do I expect from students who are seriously applying:

Those who are very hard working and prepared to work on what they NEED, not what they want. Those that are motivated, passionate, dedicated, responsible, considerate, humble and serious about lessons and greatly improving as musicians should apply only regardless of aspirations as a hobby or professionally.

The most important thing necessary to finding real progress I have found is if a student is fully prepared to work HONESTLY. We must always strive to work honestly with our technique. Issues cannot be corrected when we chose to continue to avoid them.

I strongly believe that music is a discipline and this is the manner in which it will be approached during lessons. This is a teacher-STUDENT effort. Taking responsibility for your part is a must. This includes trying to the best of your abilities to put my advice and guidance into practice away from lessons is necessary to your improvement.

I am looking for potential long-term students who are willing and ready to work hard in a practical and realistic manner, regardless of experience, learning needs or proficiency. It will not work long term if a student is not making the time or effort commitment to apply the work from our lessons at home.

Singing is a long-term sustained process to develop that can absolutely not be rushed and I want students who understand this. I have very limited availability and I am only seeking serious students who have a positive, professional attitude and will value me as a teacher. You need not know anything about voice, just have a good work ethic and attitude :)

I have some musical experience as a hobby (piano, violin, choral arts), so I can be somewhat critical when I meet musicians. I have to say, though, that Christine is an extremely talented vocalist and instructor - I daresay a vocal genius :) The way she describes and encourages understanding of abstract concepts about air direction and body support is very unique. While it remains technical, it also makes you think differently about your body in terms of physical and emotional space. If, like me, you're a technical-minded person in the more general sense, this kind of approach is helpful because you have to engage both sides of your brain. I'm always challenged at Christine's lessons, and there has been great improvement in my voice from 7 months of lessons with her. I'm also having fun in this process, which is why I continue to come back!

I highly recommend Christine. Give it a shot; you won't regret it.

Hello! My name is Zachary (or Zac for short) and I am a Baltimore-based brass performer and teacher. I have been playing euphonium and other brass instruments for 14 years. Currently, I am in my final year as a music education student at Towson University, where I study euphonium with US Navy musician James Hicks. In addition to euphonium, I am quite proficient on both trombone and tuba, and have taught trumpet and horn as well.

Currently, I play euphonium in the Towson University Symphonic Band and Towson University Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, trombone in a folk-rock style band, and am an avid solo artist. I also have two years of experience as a nationally touring member of the Troopers Drum & Bugle Corps. In addition to these experiences, I have performed with the Cadets2 Drum & Bugle Corps, the Baltimore Ravens Marching Band, and th
e Bushwackers Drum & Bugle Corps. In 2013, I was a recipient of the United States Marine Corps Semper Fidelis Award for Musical Excellence.

Zac taught me how to properly perform an aria in front of a whole lot of important people that I was stressed about. He gave me some excellent pointers on how to work with a pianist. His knowledge of music and his experience in performance has certainly shaped the way I perceive my own performances ever since that lesson.

As a musician, Zac is above and beyond talented. Because of his proficiency and excellence, he offers great insight and helpful hints on how to play properly and with support, two extremely important parts of being a musician. Lastly, it is quite obvious what music means to him. His passion is inspiring, and makes me want to continue to pursue and practice my instrument. His lessons helped me develop from a second part to a first part, enabling me to play higher and more challenging parts for my band. Knowing that I was able to leave better than I started makes myself feel lucky and appreciative that I was able to take lessons with a person like Zac. Overall, one of the best music instructors I have had the pleasure of working with.

Soprano Ellie Yeonjung Kim, completed her Master's of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music in New York studying under Joan Patenaude-Yarnell. Ellie's operatic appearances include Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro with the Dell'arte Opera Emsemble and Lucy in Menotti's TheTelephone at the Korea National Theater.

She was recognized with "great critical acclaim" by Opera News online for the role of Rita in Donizetti's Rita with the Martina Arroyo Foundation.

I have been playing guitar and bass for over ten years and have played between 3 bands over the past 6 years. We have played in many venues up and down the east coast, most notably The 9:30 Club and The Black Cat.
