Raymond C.

San Diego, CA

About Raymond

I was fortunate to be professionally taught in the Romero style of classical guitar and have studied with great concert artists such as Robert Wetzel, Dr. Alexander Dunn, Celino Romero, Dr. Randy Pile, and Dr. Colin McAllister at Grossmont College, University of California San Diego, and Victoria Conservatory of Music. I have performed in numerous masterclasses including Antonio De Innocentis, Alexander Dunn, Gerd Wuestemann, Scott Wolf, Jason Vieaux, and Celino Romero. I have also performed with various ensembles including the Grossmont, VCM, UCSD, Villa Musica, and SDSU guitar ensembles.

While I get quite a bit of enjoyment out of playing the guitar, I get greater enjoyment from passing my knowledge and experience of the instrument along to others. I have been teaching since 1999 and still get excited when a student is able to play their first melody, chord, or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
The curriculum covers a wide range of topics and techniques for classical guitar:

Finger-style picking (Classical)
Rasguados
Tremolo
Ligado/Slur technique
Scales. Arpeggios, & Modes
Sight Reading (Tab and Standard Notation)
Music Theory (Harmony and Counterpoint)
Performance practices

Learning the guitar (and music for that matter) is not so much like climbing a ladder as it is a journey. Sometimes there are obstacles you must pass, but once you get past these obstacles there is no stopping you from achieving your goal. My job is to make it easier for you to get past these obstacles (ex. technical problem) and get you to the music you want, whether it is playing your favorite song or writing the next hit single.

Note:
The classical guitar program has sight reading requirements and technique is emphasized. The beginning student will learn basic technique (ex. Apoyando and Free strokes), right hand arpeggios, left hand ligados, and sight reading through the use of exercises and etudes. Advanced students will focus on style and form. They will also be encouraged to transcribe and compose there own works. All students will be encouraged to perform, but not required.

All students are expected to have their own instrument, music stand, and books. Daily practice (20-30 min/day) is required.

While the guitar presents challenges along the way it can also be one of the most worthwhile journeys of your life. It would be an honor for me to serve as a guide on this journey.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music Stand
Books and resources
Tuners
Metronomes
Guitar Footstools

Note: Students should have their own guitar.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring my own guitar and book. The student has to provide a place appropriate for study as well as their own instrument, music stand, books, and computer (for recording students).

*** Specialties ***
I am trained professionally in Classical Guitar, but I also have experience with rock guitar as well as composition and arranging. I also have years of experience with recording and editing in Logic Pro and Sibelius.

I took four lessons so far with Ray and found that he is not only a great teacher but also an amazing guitarist. He corrects my fingering to make it easier and gives me ideas of how to practice certain strums. He also teaches me effective ways how to improve my skills. He is very pleasant and easy to get along with and learn from. Strongly recommended.

Raymond is an excellent guitar instructor.

My first lesson with Raymond went exceptionally well. After listening to me play a little, Raymond immediately honed in on my biggest weakness, and stressed the vital importance of using the metronome to play the Giuliani Right Hand Studies correctly. HIs manner was disarming and he happily answered all my questions as I tried to "pick his brain" with the many questions I had re. technique. Thus, Raymond proved to be a very knowledgeable instructor, carefully analyzing my right hand technique and sharing from his extensive background the subtleties of modern classical guitar technique as opposed to the Segovia and Romero styles. Above all, his amiable demeanor and eagerness to help me become a better player was evident throughout the entire lesson. HIs respectful behavior was very conducive to learning, and I am very excited about my next lesson with Raymond!

Outstanding teacher, highly skilled pro

Ray does phenomenal work teaching guitar as a gifted instructor and inspiring performer. My wife and I cannot stress enough how far our son has come in playing skill as well as overall understanding and appreciation of music. In choosing an instrument, we wanted one our son could take with him wherever might go in life, so as to always have the company of his own live music he could pour himself into. Ray has made that vision true. Absolutely recommended!

Great with my kids!

I've been bringing my kids to Renee for 4 years. She has a great way of relating to the kids and I appreciate her dedication and discipline.
She has a lot of resources and always is sending my kids home with extra materials to help them learn about music reading.

Not only is she a great teacher, but she can actually play and sing at a professional level. My kids are going to be with her until they graduate from high school!

My 11 year old daughter has been working with Jessica for several months now. She is amazing!!! My daughter just started doing musical theatre at school and I wanted a singing coach to help her to feel more comfortable on stage. Jessica not only has helped her with singing, but has coached her with monologues for auditions with the San Diego Junior Theatre. My daughter had her first audition with SD Junior theatre and because of the wonderful support and direction of Jessica, she was called back for a lead role...this on her first audition. My daughter was not cast as the lead, but was cast in the play. Jessica has given my daughter much more confidence to perform and speak in front of people, even if she never becomes a serious actress. This will help her in any career she chooses. I would highly recommend Jessica to anyone looking for a highly qualified and professional teacher. Every time we leave her private tutoring session, my daughter always says " I love her!!!"...not kidding.

Jessica is absolutely brilliant!

Her method has done what I can only describe as "unlocking" abilities.

Her friendly yet diligent explanation of techniques activated and energized my body in ways I've never experienced -- like some sort of soundwave-based yoga. I barely recognize myself when this bold sound blasts forth stoked by her encouragement -- It borders on the transcendent, but mostly it just feels amazing and is tremendous fun!

Otherwise, Jessica herself has the voice of an angel -- and she's also incredibly smart, patient, precise, knowledgeable, encouraging, sweet, interesting, charming, eclectic, funny, super-talented, and generally lovely.

I knew I was out of my league in asking such a seasoned, classically-trained pro for help perfecting my rock n' roll grit, but she can effortlessly condense her formidable wealth of knowledge into succinct pearls of wisdom to toss to swine like me. She is a much better teacher than I deserve, but I am nonetheless incredibly grateful and thankful for every hour I spent with her.

I'll be recommending Jessica to everyone I know and will keep coming back whenever I can.

I'm sure you'll love her too!

Sincerely,

Dan Drake

Danielle L.

San Diego, CA

About Danielle

Hello Students / Parents!

I specialize in providing a fun, inspiring and safe space for each student to reach their goals – whether that be for the novice singer whose been wrongfully told they “shouldn't sing,” the more experienced singer looking to branch out into doing more with their music or doing it professionally, or the budding songwriter, actor or speaker looking to develop the talent and drive they feel within them.

I always remember the encouragement, patience and inspiration I received from my best teachers, and strive to provide exactly that to my own students. I sing
and teach most vocal styles, with the exception of opera, and utilize our studio to create a supportive, empowering experience singing, writing and recording. I absolutely love to teach both children and adults and look forward to learning how to best support each one of my students in their individual path toward realizing their potential.

Here's a bit about my background and musical experience:

• Bachelors of Fine Arts degree (Theatre/Voice) from United States International University – Graduated Valedictorian
• Chula Vista School of Creative and Performing Arts – Graduated Valedictorian
Workshops and studying with Bill Doyle, Roy Mote, Andrew Barnicle, Jack Tygett, Leanne Summers, among others.

"After seeing Danielle, I was impressed with her intensity as a performer. Her ability to get behind a lyric was stunning, she lives every line. As an artistic performer, I've yet to see better."
-Tony Ferguson / Interscope Records: No Doubt, Bush, Fisher

My original band, Danielle and The Masses, has been recording and performing live since 2001. We are endorsed by Ani Difranco, The Black Eyed Peas, The Bruce Hornsby Band, and have shared the stage with artists as Jamie Foxx, CAKE, Metric, En Vogue, David Byrne, Berlin, Margaret Cho, Cyndi Lauper, Jonatha Brooke, Beth Hart, Semi Precious Weapons and more.

I have written and performed music and voice over for Ace Ventura, Nutty Professor, VH1, various TV shows and independent documentaries, Eveoke Dance Theatre, among others, as well as having recorded eight professional CDs of various styles on various record labels.

For over ten years, my record / production company, Say It Records has been producing socially conscious music events throughout San Diego and Southern California that promote independent music, film, art, community and human rights. I also co-own Durga Sound, a teaching and production studio, with producer Alicia Champion, as well as San Diego IndieFest, a powerful community event which promotes and supports music, film, art and civic engagement.

I have a great time utilizing my contacts in the industry to help my students get work/ press / entrance into the schools of their choice, etc. For example, I'm happy to report that just last year we were able to book eight musicians on GLEE, as well as lots more in other capacities including using their music in commercials and film and helping them get cast in local theatre and accepted into arts-centered schools.

*** Lesson Details ***
I start on the first lesson by becoming clear about what the new student's goals and desires are – from there, we start developing technique to achieve those goals along with having fun right away doing what they came for - singing, writing, voice over, acting or using a combination of these things be it for professional purposes or personal fulfillment. Every lesson is personally customized to meet the specific goals of each student. As a teacher, I'm encouraging and fun, passionate and positive. While I'm definitely not "strict", I do appreciate focus and drive. However, I often work with people who have special needs and are working on developing those very things. I'm especially good at helping people through progress plateaus, roadblocks, stage fright, loss/ stress. Using music as a means of release and healing - for both kids and adults - is something I do a lot of and am very comfortable with.

As far as technique is concerned, I focus on utilizing posture, correct breathing and developing relaxed, strong support, so that the muscles are developed properly and without stress, enabling the student's voice to constantly grow while also steering clear of the injury that can accompany the straining that often happens when singing without proper technique.

I strongly encourage students to record their lessons on a mobile device so they can practice easily on their own, and so they eventually have a record of how far they've grown.
We mostly use tracks to develop repertoire, prepare for auditioning and performances, and to have fun singing the music that excites each student the most.

*** Specialties ***
Using music, writing and voice as a means of expressing yourself, growing as a performance artist, coping in challenging times, as well as a means of going professional and earning income are all areas I specialize in. Utilizing proper technique and learning how to sing / speak safely is also an area I focus on a great deal.

Learning precisely what each student wants is the key factor in my decision on how to achieve their goals. For example, using Speech Level Singing is definitely entrenched in my teaching, but I may not highlight it as much for those who want a more classical sound.

I definitely excel with the following: first timers, very young kids, students working through stage fright, artists looking to develop their own original project, those seeking growth in their process of writing / recording / performing, those who are interested in using music and / or writing as therapy as well as with amateurs who've always wanted to do something musical but who think they are "too old" or too "untalented/short/tall/ fill in the blank" to try. I believe we all have something to say with our lives - finding the voice within you can be an incredibly powerful and transformative experience!

Danielle is one of the most kind-hearted, positive women I know. I have been taking lessons with her for about 4 months now and she has really taught me a lot about myself and getting over my insecurities about my voice tone and singing in front of others. Her knowledge of the music industry has also really helped put the process all in perspective for me. Being somewhat of a closet singer, I look forward to her guidance each week to help bring this talent and passion for singing out of me!
