Valerie B.

Wilmington, DE

About Valerie

Hi there! My name is Valerie. I'm a certified music teacher that loves to see a person grow in their love and ability for music. With 17 years of teaching privately, experience teaching publicly in elementary school music classrooms, enjoying several years as a Kindermusik (preschool music) teacher, and a school year teaching with VSA arts of Delaware (teaching music to those with disabilities), I find it thrilling to see a person of any age & background grow and blossom in their passion for music!

Though I enjoy and have experience at teaching all ages from children to adults, I spec
ialize in CHILDREN'S MUSIC EDUCATION (ages 5-12). I would describe myself as an elementary school music teacher that teaches privately. ;) My studio is filled with many smiles, stickers for every accomplishment, and a treasure box of cool prizes for those who are practicing regularly and did a great job in their lesson. Lessons are a time where children can feel like music really is fun and enjoyable to learn and experience!

In addition to being a teacher, I am also a singer/songwriter, and performed for 6 years at local coffee shops and outdoor events within Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. I am also a member of a local professional caroling group called Yuletide Singers which performs seasonally in places like Longwood Gardens and corporate functions. My history for performing stretches back, though, to my years as a puppeteer/children's performer, touring with a team doing school assemblies and evening family performances. I'm always excited to bring my understanding and experience with performance to my students!

**And, with excitement, I must add that TakeLessons named me "Teacher of the Week" on October 4, 2010! What a great honor! Thank you TakeLessons!!**

*** Lesson Details ***
Our time spent together will be filled with many smiles & laughs because that is probably why you want to take lessons -- because it makes you feel wonderful inside!

Within 3-6 months, we'll begin discovering how to read music and understand the language of it. We'll learn how to play/sing some of your favorite songs and learn some that you might not know. We'll discover what you really want to learn and achieve through taking lessons, and we'll work toward those goals!

For the intermediate piano student, we will begin understanding basic Music Theory and scales and will even take a look at how chord symbols work. Soon, you'll be learning how to accompany yourself and others as you sing! For singers, we'll learn about vocal techniques, breathing, getting your best vocal sound and discovering how to take a song to its potential! We'll also learn performance techniques, how to work with a microphone, have a great stage presence in front of a live audience and begin learning how to read music and even get familiar with the piano keyboard! For all my students, it's a journey that is exciting, unique to each individual, and one we will embark on together!

Because music is a performing art, I coordinate two music recitals each school year for students who are interested. This is an optional event, but is encouraged as part of the learning experience. It is usually held at a local music store recital room and presented in a low-stress and fun way with refreshments that follow!

*My studio is in a safe, family-friendly home & smoke-free environment. We also having a loving canine member in our family... a Yellow Labrador Retriever named Maximus. He is energetic and friendly. You may or may not see him since the entrance to my studio is through our back door, off the main house.

So! What do you say? Shall we START THE MUSIC? :)

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons are enjoyed in a dedicated music room; keyboard (full-size with weighted keys and sustain pedal)

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers classified as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25
lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.

I specialize in music education for all children, including ones with special needs. I feel it is so important for a child to start out with a fun and wonderful experience with music and performing. My approach is simple and fun and understandable for the young mind.

For my more intermediate students, I enjoy taking them to the next level of understanding in their instrument as well as music theory.

Because music is a performing art, I coordinate two music recitals each year for students who are interested. This is an optional event and presented in a low-stress and fun way!

We chose Valerie because of her experience with kids. She made my daughter feel at ease immediately, connecting with her through humor, easy-to-understand communication and praise. In just three lessons, I can already see the difference in my daughter's voice. We are happy to have found Valerie!

Alexis explains technique in a way that is at once immediately understandable and easy to implement. I've only had a few lessons with her and I'm already noticing a huge improvement. I would highly recommend her as a voice teacher to anyone at any level.

Alexis has been a wonderful private vocal instructor for my son who is currently a middle school student. She is professional, versatile, helpful, flexible and extremely encouraging as a teacher and mentor. Alexis believes that her students need a solid musical foundation; she is willing to spend time teaching the basics in order to assure her students know how to read music. She has been able to help my son grasp and learn music theory concepts that were sometime challenging in his music theory class at school. Alexis has also worked diligently with my son on musical theatre audition preparation which prepared him and ultimately earned him lead roles in a few musical theatre productions. Alexis is very versatile and is able to teach many types of musical and vocal styles from classical, to Broadway – musical theatre and to popular music, etc. She worked with my son and helped him gain confidence to participate as a vocal soloist for his school’s talent show. I also love the fact that Alexis can see the growth in her student’s after they have worked hard in their private lessons; she offers them advice and encouragement and often recommends new opportunities for the student to try such as auditioning for All State Choirs. Alexis is also very flexible and will work with you in instances where you need to change, reschedule or cancel your vocal lessons. This flexibility is greatly needed and appreciated as a busy parent who may have to change the schedule due to personal conflicts or work commitment. But, the best endorsement that I can give for Alexis is that my son trust, believes in and likes Alexis as a teacher and as a person and as a parent, I don’t think you can ask for too much more!

Amanda B.

West Chester, PA

About Amanda

I am currently studying at West Chester University of Pennsylvania majoring in Violin Performance, with oboe as my minor instrument. I perform with the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, Baroque Ensemble and many other small ensembles on campus. I am also an active performer in the local area, and I especially enjoy playing in operas and musical theater. I have experience playing classical, fiddle and rock genres, with my focus being classical. I have been furthering my teaching skills through American String Teachers Association membership, Suzuki training, and pedagogy s
tudy at the Starling-Delay Symposium on Violin Studies held at The Julliard School.

I work to help students create and achieve their musical goals. Every student goes home with a list of points covered in their lesson so they know exactly what must be practiced for the upcoming lessons. This list helps students practice in a more focused fashion so they can improve as steadily and quickly as possible. I customize my teaching style for each student to ensure that they get the most out of lessons. Students with longer lessons (45min or more) can benefit from music theory workbooks and games which I incorporate into the lessons. My goal is to make every lesson fun and challenging for my students!

I give my students multiple performance opportunities each year. The past two years I had a formal spring recitals where my students had the experience of playing with an accompanist in a recital hall. Another performance opportunity I offered in the past was a more casual Duet Day where my students and I performed duets for their family and the community in a park. Of course, these opportunities change from year to year, but the emphasis is always on having fun in performance!

Allison is a fantastic instructor. I had no experience playing piano or with anything related to music. She's taught me how to read music, play basic songs, and patience because learning music is tough when, like me, you start with no prior knowledge. I will continue taking piano lessons with her and improving the already solid base she has given me.
