About Daniel

In addition to teaching music, I have also worked as a special education assistant and wrestling/track coach at Lake Zurich Middle School South and an assistant Kung Fu/Tai Chi instructor at Green Mountain Arts in Logan Square, Chicago, Illinois. Jazz piano, Voice, and Composition are my main areas of expertise. However, I have also been recording, and playing guitar almost my entire life. I fully believe in music education not only for entertainment and personal enjoyment, but for many other means.
Beyond its capacity for being used as entertainment, music aids in learning, helps develop advanced motor skills, increases memory function, and many other purposes for a well rounded education. It is my goal to help educate the next generation in traditional music practices as well as incorporate new techniques that are relevant to our

current day and age.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lesson plans vary from person to person. I always make it a point to get to know the student's existing musical knowledge, goals, and background before I create a personalized lesson plan. All important concepts are covered as they are needed so students can understand theoretical concepts based upon actual application and usage. In short, I teach in a way that students can "dig in" right away and play, create, improvise, sing and/or compose freely and naturally. I always encourage students or parents to contact me with their goals, previous musical training, etc., and discuss what they really want out of lessons so they can get the most out of taking me on as an instructor.

Daniel cancelled my son's first lesson with less than a one hour notice. He attended the second lesson, but again cancelled the third lesson with a 30 minute notice. He sent me a text message to notify me and I called him back and left a voicemail. 24 hours later and I still haven't gotten a call back. I want my money back. He has wasted my son's time. Poor professionalism.

Daniel adapted throughout the course of the hour-long lesson to understand what I already knew and find appropriate ways to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. He also started me on the process of learning a new approach when looking at and learning to play new music pieces.

About Marissa

My musical journey started in high school when my algebra teacher saw me in the hallway, grabbed my hand and brought me to the choir room to sign up for The Sound of Music auditions. To this day I cannot believe my math teacher unknowingly sent me straight down a path that I would walk the rest of my life. After The Sound Of Music I never left music. I kept singing in high school by participating in the school musicals and different choir ensembles. When it came to college I started taking private lessons and music classes for fun until I realized this is my passion and I wanted to make a life of this. When you wake up everyday and the first thing you do is sing at that point there was no other way to live. There I started my journey with really learning the voice as an instrument and how it works. I found that I am a vocal scientist

at heart believing you will go a long way as long as you know how to grow. Being a vocal scientist, I find it so interesting to know what exactly needs to happen when we sing in order sing in a healthy and beautiful manner.

While I was at Moraine Valley after I firmly chose music I felt I needed more of a diverse program so I can answer any possible music based question. I then went on to get my degree at VanderCook College of Music where they teach nothing but music education. Their program intensely teaches all the band and orchestral instruments on top general education classes and your major, mine being voice. While I was there I also took the time to study privately with our percussion professor to learn rhythms and with our sight singing and ear training professor to further develop my ear and knowledge. All in all I have been studying the voice for 13 years and counting. I do all this so that I could pass that experience down to you.

▪Lesson Details▪
In my lessons I like to teach vocal techniques such as raising your soft palate, correct breathing techniques, and a forward placement. These are the tools to help a vocal musician grow for the rest of their lives.

Another part of being a vocal musician that I teach is ear training and or rhythm. These are things I wish I would have learned earlier on and are essential to being an independent musician.

Expression (including body movements, hand gestures, facial expression, and musical expression such as accents and dynamics) are a large part of performing as a vocalist and are definitely things we prepare as well.

I like to keep a more uplifting environment when teaching so although you should expect a push for success, you should always feel comfortable and not afraid to make mistakes.

▪Performance opportunities▪
Studio vocal recitals

▪Studio Equipment▪
Lessons in the studio room, electric piano

▪Travel Equipment▪
I can provide literature and a music stand while the students should have a full length keyboard and or piano.

▪Specialties▪
I teach rhythm, sight singing and ear training, general musical terms, expression, and specific vocal techniques.

Marissa is a wonderful teacher. I have never had singing lessons before. My first experience was remarkable. I love how comfortable she makes me feel when I go to practice. She has so much patience, which is another thing I love about her. I would refer the world to her if I could. I will definitely be referring my cousin.

As an instructor I have maintained a studio of five to twenty students on a weekly basis. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Colorado in Percussion Performance, and a Master of Music degree from De Paul University in Jazz Studies.

*** Lesson Details ***
With committed weekly practice there are no limits to a student's potential. I like to use the term guide to describe my teaching style. In a relaxed atmosphere, the student and I are working together to advance their musical goals. Sometimes goals are reached quickly, more often we need more time and repetition to advance. The mind learns quicker than the body, so focused

practice will help train the body and bring it to the mind's level.

*** Travel Equipment ***
Student should provide sticks and mallets and purchase a book that we will work out of weekly.

About Sarah

Classically trained pianist and singer. When it comes to piano, I have over 20 years of training under my belt. Majority of my experience deals with classical and accompaniment but have also studied jazz and contemporary.
In the way of singing, I am a classically trained singer who majored in Opera Performance in college. I have plenty of performance experience from being on the stage in operas and musical to performing with choirs and solo recitals. In voice lessons a student can choose to specialize in opera or if they were to take standard voice lessons, they could expect a wide variety of music focusing on multiple languages and genres including musical theater.

With every musician, Music Theory is crucial. All students will learn the basics of reading music and those who choose, can go beyond to learn the structure of music a

nd why music is the way it is with Music Theory lessons.

I am qualified to teach all levels of piano, opera, and voice.I take a real hands on, active approach to teaching, going beyond just the lesson books.

I am also able to offer tutoring services. I have been tutoring since high school. In high school as part of the National Honors Society, we were asked to tutor once a week and it continued into college when I decided to double major in Psychology taking an interest in adolescence psychology. My strong suits and reading and math but I am more than happy to help in any subject.

I do have dogs in the house so please be advised if you have allergies.

*** Lesson Details ***
Our sessions will be laid back and easy going. I expect the students to do their work and practice and as long as they are showing progress, we can continue with a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I am patient with my students, and do my best to develop teaching methods unique to each student to give the best experience and set them up for the highest level of success. I don't push students to perfection but rather assist them in reaching their personal best. As long as they are having fun and learning, I know I am doing my job. Music is to be enjoyed and that is my goal with each student.

For voice and piano, students will learn a wide variety of music. I also believe strongly in the power of sight reading. Students will also learn music theory in their lessons. Piano students will follow a lesson book curriculum along with learning scales and sight reading. Voice students will sing from all major languages (English, French, Italian, and German) and practice sight reading skills.

Students should bring a notebook to lessons where notes will be taken on what we accomplished in our lessons and what needs to be worked on for the next lesson. This will usually include a theory sheet, technique work, and songs.

Twice a year I hold a recital where students get to show off to other students and family what they have accomplished in their lessons. With piano students, you will prepare and memorize usually one song. For voice students, you will prepare and memorize two songs, at least one will be in a foreign language.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lower level for studio, piano, seating for parents, on site computer for easy reference and music samples.

*** Specialties ***
I have an Opera performance degree. I am a classically trained singer and pianist.

About Matt

Hi! My name is Matt M. and I am the owner and founder of Black & White Music Services, Inc., a professional music education and production company.
I began teaching at a fairly early age and moved to teaching privately over 9 years ago. I have a deep passion for music and the guitar and do my best to instill that same passion in new and experienced players alike. Throughout my playing career I have participated in numerous ensembles including jazz bands, classical groups and quartets, as well as solo performance groups. I am extremely thorough when it comes to my teaching style. I make sure the student has a clear understanding of not only the how but also the why while keeping my curriculum fun and interesting. Every student is different and I do my best to gain an understanding of the individual and build a lesson plan best suited for

that individual.

Matt continues to challenge me. His teaching methods are great - he doesn't just teach techniques, he immediately puts techniques to work by applying them to a song I would like to learn. He is also very good about explaining the reasoning behind certain techniques/habits.

Matt was very thorough in determining my current skill level (which is basically beginner with some previous limited exposure to music and some self-taught cowboy chords). He asked me what I wanted to focus on and worked with me on beginning to change some bad habits/techniques that I had developed. Matt didn't just instruct, he EXPLAINED. I felt that the lesson was much more of a mutual discussion than a lecture/demonstration, which is a great thing. I felt very comfortable and believe that Matt's teaching techniques will help me achieve my goals.

I have a Masters Degree in Music Performance from DePaul University School of Music and I have been teaching lessons since 2015. I can teach students at all levels of ability. As a freelance musician I have performed with the Chicago Clarinet Ensemble, The Chicago Composers Forum, Wheaton Municpal Band and other ensembles. I think there are two important parts of taking clarinet lessons: learning the fundamentals, and having lots of fun. I focus on basics like embouchure, air, and tone to help you develop good technique. I will also work with you to select music that you like and that you will be excited to play. I look forward to meeting you and working wit

About Stephanie

I started Suzuki violin lessons at the age of 3 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from UW-Milwaukee. In following years, I did post graduate work at Alverno College and went on to complete Suzuki teacher training in Suzuki Books 1-3. Besides teaching private violin, viola, and piano lessons, I perform regularly with Fretless Strings, Bowtime, Nine Worlds Ensemble, Animal Farm, Electric 5, and occasionally with various orchestras. I've had the extreme pleasure of performing with such notables as the rock band Kansas, Peter Cetera from the rock group Chicago, Rod Stewart, Final Fantasy "Distant Worlds: Milwaukee" show, Doc Severinsen, Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses, and most recently at Riot Fest with That Dog. I've also had the privilege of recording music for Milwaukee Public Television as well as for Chica

go-area composers and singer-songwriters.

Stephanie is patient, quick to respond and very flexible. I'm a adult beginner and she has been my teacher for a year now. She makes me feel comfortable when learning. I have a very busy schedule and she is always willing to work with me including coming to my home late at night. She is easy going and it's been a great year and I have learned alot! I definitely recommend and am continuing lessons with her!

Stephanie is wonderful. First of all, she is a truly virtuosic player. She plays beautifully. That is hugely important. Never hire a violin teacher who does not make a gorgous sound. She makes a gorgeous sound. Second, she is an amazing TEACHER. She knows how to tailor her approach to the student’s unique learning style and musical tastes. She can take you through a purely classical curriculum, or she can also help you learn to play your favorite pop songs. I have been taking lessons with her for two years and my adult (step)daughter who has Down Syndrome has been studying with her for a little over a year. I have progressed consistently and my stepdaughter has also progressed consistently. Stephanie definitly knows how to collaborate with me to adapt her lessons to my (step)daughter’s special needs. My (step)daughter loves her lessons and Stephanie mixes things up to keep her excited and motivated to practice. Stephanie prepares more in advance for lessons than any instrument teacher I have ever observed. She creates her own teaching aids for each student, personalized to their needs. She has formal Suzuki training both as a learner and teacher, so she knows the Suzuki curriculum, and can use a strictly Suzuki approach for people who want that, but she also knows the scope and sequences of skills so thoroughly that she can guide students without relying on Suzuki if that approach is preferred. She takes a positive approach, helping students to learn to listen to and evaluate their own playing rather than over critiquing. She teaches students to practice effectively, and uses questions to gently guide students to draw appropriate conclusions about what they need to do to improve their playing. She paces lessons well. She does not require perfection before moving on, but also discourages racing through repertoire without developing the target skill represented by the repertoire. She does not waste lesson time. She uses lesson time very efficiently. Her demeanor is warm, calm, mindful, gentle and kind, but firm about holding students to appropriately high expectations. I started wth her as an adult beginner and have loved every minute. I am now an intermediate player... sooner than I expected. She is also very reliable. She does not forget appointments or run late or cancel frequently. The room she teaches in is clean and organized. I really think she is very appropriate for gifted kids, average kids, kids with special needs, and adult beginners both typical and with special needs.
