Jessie M.

Pasadena, CA

About Jessie

Every student is a unique person who deserves a lesson customized to their individual needs. Each of my students prospers in an atmosphere of patience and encouragement. While the lessons are fun and enjoyable, the serious student will be supported in the development of skills leading to a rewarding career. And the more casual students will grow in an appreciation of music that will always enrich their lives.

As a music major I developed a deeper understanding of music theory, piano, voice, and theater. I received my A.A. in Music at College of the Desert and my Bachelor of Music degree at
the University of Redlands- which I attended on a music scholarship. I have played leading roles in several operas and musicals in Southern California, including Gianni Schicchi, Die Fledermaus, La Boheme (DTL nominee), The Impresario, The Grand Duke, Patience (DTL award), Cosi fan tutte, Little Women, Seussical, and many more. I have also appeared in several concerts, opera scenes, competitions (winning music scholarships and theater awards), and worked as a singer in churches, restaurants, and in pop bands. I continue to stay active in the performance industry, because performing is a part of who I am and I could never live without it!

With this experience under my belt, I feel a desire to pass on my knowledge to students. I carry a strong passion to help people develop their abilities and make them their own. I truly believe that if someone wants something out of life then they WILL achieve it with dedication, perseverance, confidence, and by having FUN doing it!

Jessie is great! This is my first time taking vocal lessons and wasn't sure what to expect. I'm enjoying the experience so far. She makes me feel comfortable and learning a lot from warm ups we practice. Her knowledge with singing and music is inspiring and she's informative, down to earth, and has a great personality. I know I will reach my goals and can see myself develop a nice voice that will sound great with my lessons with Jessie. She is the kind of instructor I was looking for and look forward to the results.

EDUCATION

HOWARD UNIVERSITY— Washington, DC
BA in Music Therapy, with Minors in Bassoon & Piano

UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX— Pasadena, CA
Master of Business Administration (MBA)

I absolutely love teaching! I've been teaching music for over 25 years!
That's all I've ever known. Coming from a family of educators and musicians of two generations we wanted to do something for the community, so I co-founded Piano Play Music Systems,Inc. (an award winning inclusive private & group music program for children voted” The Best Piano School for Kids in LA”) 400+ student aged 19 months -
adults. I further developed an advanced group piano pedagogy series of method books by editing, creating and developing characters, lyrics for songs within the books to enhance more enthusiasm for learning with older children.
As a trained music therapist, I also co-founded Keylife Foundation,(a non-profit organization that offers services for special needs children, primarily in the autism spectrum). Developed a keyboard program and curriculum with the Braille Institute of Los Angeles and other special needs children focusing on mainstreaming them into regular classes. Music is such a gift to give to others and its an art that is non-judgemental. Its all about you. That's what I want to bring the student--to love and enjoy. If its a recital you want, you can have that too!

I am a current member Music Teachers Assn. of California which can give my students a platform to perform and participate in competitions in the future as well.

*** Lesson Details ***
I believe lessons should have balance. I am going to give my very best to you in our time together, so let's rock it. I want you to get it and hopefully love it. We know you have a life, but put some time into your exercises and music and you will see progress.
I work well with children, but love adults too! If you want fundamentals, you've got the right lady. I teach classical repertoire and technique as well as pop, rock, standards. If you want more theory or ear training, I can do that too! Just Do it !

*** Travel Equipment ***
If we are able do additional computer theory, I will bring a laptop. I expect my students to have a full sized keyboard (if possible)or piano.

*** Specialties ***
Pretty general, across the board from Classical to pop.

About John

*** Specialties ***
Hi, there! My name is John M and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2012 and have loved helping my students build a solid foundation and understanding of music, as well as developing their skills to become well rounded musicians. I also help my students learn to enjoy practicing and performing. I went to the University of Redlands and earned a degree in Music Composition in 2014. I'm a fun and friendly person and my teaching style is constructed in a way that will appeal to visual, aural, and kinesthetic learners. I am very interested in Kod
aly's method of inner hearing and music literacy. I also use warm ups that will help my students develop proper playing techniques, and I teach my students how to play with expression, and emotion. I strive to teach at the best of my ability, work hard, and share my love for music with others. I look forward to helping you reach your goals!

Katie Y.

Redlands, CA

About Katie

I have been teaching young students piano for two years. Currently, I am working towards my BA at Cal State San Bernardino for a music education degree, and am currently the president of the Cal State Piano Society. I have been playing piano for fourteen years and love every aspect of music. My goal is to pass my passion for music onto my students, and allow them to develop a deep appreciation and understanding for all genres.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a strong believer in making the learning process fun and enjoyable. I want my students to be motivated to learn and practice as much
as possible. My teaching style consists of starting with the basics (technique, theory, and reading music) then graduating to style and phrasing. My students will always leave our lessons feeling accomplished and confident. Learning an instrument is hard work, but with enough effort and commitment, anything is possible!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Baldwin Upright Piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect my students to provide a piano and the required materials (i.e. metronome and music books)

*** Specialties ***
I believe that technique is very important when it comes to piano. I start with teaching the basic scales, hand positions, and good posture. Then I begin teaching music theory, in which the student learns how to read notes, rhythms, dynamics, etc. Once the student becomes proficient in reading and technique, I give them more difficult pieces in order to work on style, voicing, and phrasing.
