Jonathan H.

Hatfield, PA

About Jonathan

I started my musical education in a children'€™s choir at age 6.
When I turned 8 years old, I began piano lessons. I started violin
at 9 and trombone at 10. I am now proficient on the guitar, bass, and piano. Having completed my tour of duty in the U.S. Army, I am currently on the Dean'€™s list as a music/audio production major, and plan to continue my music education until I earn at least a masters in performance and composition. I started my teaching career at Milestones in Music, a local studio, as an independent contractor, where i was able to gain valuable experience and fine tune m
y curriculum. I am a member of the Grammy U Recording Academy, and have had opportunities to work with a lot of different musicians. (The Recording Academy is the organization that created the most prestigious
award in music, the Grammy). I am the band leader at my church Montco Bible Fellowship, and the lead audio tech for an audio/video group.. Sanctuary Sound. I also do consultant work for organizations looking to setup a sound system/studio. I enjoy recording my own music in my home studio, and learning to play new instruments. I hope to pass my love for music to the next generation!

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a very laid back instructor... as you will find out! I understand that not everyone learns at the same rate; however, I am a perfectionist and don't allow students to advance until they have learned a particular skill. I would rather a student take forever to learn a song, and practice it with good technique, than be able to play it right away with poor form and posture! I reinforce the value of working toward goals and celebrate with students when they reach them.  I understand that every student has different interests and reasons for wanting to learn an instrument... I try to focus on the areas that are of interest to the student, because if you are enjoying yourself then you will excel.  This does not mean that the subjects and skills that are not of interest will not be taught, because I believe in being a well-rounded musician. I teach both jazz (improvisation/reading chord charts) and classical (written/ composed music).

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio is currently not optimal for teaching... I hope to change this within the next year!!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson books and other learning materials, but expect to be reimbursed. I expect the student to have their own instrument/equipment. Piano students are required to have a piano or a keyboard with weighted keys/hammer-action (preferably 88 keys), a piano bench and a pedal. Guitar/bass students must have an acoustic/electric guitar/bass with a strap or footstool, pick, and cable and amplifier if applicable! Digital audio students must have their own computer, Digital Audio workstation (software), digital audio interface, speakers/headphones and midi controller. All students must purchase a full size notebook with lined or staff paper!

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in classical and jazz piano! I am more than proficient at most production software including: cubase, reason, fl studio, melodyne, digital performer and protools... and other editing software such as sony sound forge, audacity, etc...

I had told Jonathan prior to his first visit that I wanted my son to actually take his time and learn, not goof around. I also wanted music theory to be a majority of his lesson, rather than my son continuing to learn by ear. Jonathan definitely took the course I wanted him to take.

He knows exactly what he is doing. He has shown me techniques my past 2 instructors failed to even attempt to show me. I'm not where I want to be but with him I am confident I'm on my way. Whether you're a beginner or advanced there's always room for improvement and Desmond will find it within that session. He is willing to work with you schedule and need I mention very affordable. You won't regret his classes!

Good product with excellent skills.

I've had the opportunity to work with Desmond upon forming his Vocal Ensemble choir, that had a Classical based foundation. As one of the Ensembles’ founding member I sang with the alto line, and found great joy and fulfillment in attending rehearsals.
Within six months of our choirs’ conception we had an enormous repertoire, and was touring, appearing on television, attending interviews with the media, performing in and winning competitions. Needless to say Desmond’s musical skills was a ray of sunlight, which came our way boosting our self confidence, while creating success for the group. I’m happy to have been a part of this group and am pleased to recommend Desmond to anyone who is serious and wants to learn music.

After 30 years I finally decided to learn how to play drums. Kevin clearly knows what he's doing in any genre of drumming! It seemed like every lesson he had a clear/thorough plan, didn't stress me out by teaching to rapidly, or bore me by going to slowly. A very solid teacher.

Been trying to get my middle-schooler to practice for a few years now. It's like pulling teeth.

Kevin has somehow broken through to him. Fun lessons. Incredibly useful homework. Couldn't recommend him more.

Kelsey was a very good teacher. My son was a little too young to continue lessons, but she was very patient with him for his age. She made the class very interactive and fun, with animal sounds and children songs.

Kelsey does a fantastic job!! I've been singing for almost 3 years now and I write my own originals but never knew why, when I would sing I would always change the melody in my lyrics. I would never stay consistent even though I was writing the music. With just a few lessons I am already gaining more control and confidence in my voice. Kelsey truly understands the voice and makes learning very easy, fun and exciting!! If I want to learn to sing like Ed sheeran or any other artist, she knows exactly what to do and takes the proper steps to grow my voice in the direction I want to take it. She is very adaptive and will suit anyone's needs. You will be very satisfied with Kelsey and her instruction. She is not just a teacher but also a top notch musician and an amazing song writing, anyone would be pleased and happy to have her as a teacher.
