Songwriting is both a creative process and methodical process. As a songwriting teacher, I try to help students support their creativity by learning about the craft of songwriting. I am as much a student of songwriting as I am a professional and believe the reason I was able to land my publishing deal was because of my study of the subject of songwriting. I'm looking forward to sharing those lessons with you!

About Alvin

Whether you are looking to write or produce, I can help bring both beginners, intermediate and advanced students to the next level. I've written and produced songs that have appeared on Power 105.1, NYC's biggest Urban Radio Station, CBC, Canada's biggest radio station and some of the biggest Spot

Alvin is a great producer and collaborator to work with! I have been working with Alvin the past few months, and it has been a great experience! He is dedicated to making quality music, and really understand the needs of a songwriter and vocalist from the role of a producer and arranger. He has a great ear and picks up on little subtleties in your voice that you can improve, and this causes you to hold yourself accountable to the same standards as a result. Hi, there!

My name is Sarah-Kate, and I have been teaching vocal lessons for many years. My goal is to make learning fun and productive. I know that singing in front of someone can cause anxiety, so I aim to make my lessons as laid-back and stress-free as possible (while still learning!). I tell my students that their lessons are a "judgement-free zone."

I teach proper singing technique (including breathing, posture, tonality, etc.) and how to read music if the student doesn't already know. The styles I teach run the gamut from pop to musical theater to classical. Especially for younger/beginning students, I like to let them choose what they'd like to sing (while offering guidance if necessary).

I have taught people from age five up through adults. Whether you want to be the next American Idol or just sound better in the shower, I'm your teacher!

I have a degree in music (voice and cello) with additional certification in music therapy. Looking forward to hearing from ...

Our lessons will be laid-back, encouraging, and productive. We will work together to help you achieve your goals and gain a well-rounded music education, regardless of age or musical background. Students who study guitar with me will not only learn songs they love to play, but will learn proper technique, sight-reading, music theory, and ear training. I tailor each lesson based on the musical interests and goals of the student. I aim to give the students a solid foundation in technique and theory in order to help the student feel comfortable with the guitar and to make progress at a steady rate.

If you're reading this, you are very lucky because you've just found the most amazing music teacher!
Our son has studied piano with Joao for the past four years. He started with Joao when he was six and continues to this day. He loves Joao. Joao is a patient, intuitive and adaptive teacher that provides incredible instruction, in any music genre. He honed in on our son's musical interests early on, making learning piano fun and interesting. We often say, Joao is not just teaching our son piano, he is giving him a music education, introducing him to an array of amazing pieces from different genres. He's a rare talent both as a teacher and musician. We feel incredibly lucky to have found him. You will too!
Michael
I studied jazz piano with Joao for over a year. In my time working with him, I learned a tremendous amount. Joao is both an extremely talented musician and a skilled instructor. He clearly cares a great deal about his students and their progress. He was always patient (especially during weeks when my practicing had been slow) and both encouraging and supportive of my efforts to master new concepts in jazz. Joao has an excellent sense for what his students want to accomplish in their musical explorations, and an ability to tailor his lessons to the student’s unique goals. He has an impressive knowledge of both the history of jazz and music theory which makes him an incredible resource for learning about the jazz idiom. Last but not least, Joao was very personable and fun to talk to, and I always a enjoyed working with him. He is an outstanding teacher.

Beginner Piano Exercises: How to Tame the Flyaway Fourth Finger

When you're learning how to play the piano, finger exercises are especially important--especially if you're having trouble controlling that pesky fourth finger! Learn the steps to take in this guest post by Ann Arbor, MI teacher Amy C...   When I first began to learn piano, my fourth finger seemed bent on being anywhere but on the keys. Whenever I was not using it, the fourth finger--and by extension, the fifth finger--simply floated in midair, hovering above the ivories. This meant t …
