You already enjoy listening to music, now it's t
ime to enjoy making it!

***About Me***
I've appeared on recordings with dozens of rock, pop, jazz, and classical groups, and perform on a variety of instruments and styles throughout the Boston area.

I listen to and play all kinds of music from Beethoven to Stravinsky, Arcade Fire to Beyonce, James Brown to Snoop Dogg/Lion. I have had the pleasure to share the stage with rockers Dee Snider (Twisted Sister), Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots), and Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), and jazz greats Maynard Ferguson, Jimmie Lunceford, Conrad Herwig, "Blue" Lou Marini, and Jeff Coffin (Flecktones).

I've played acoustic and electric guitar, bass guitar, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, violin, cello, and string bass drums. Some of my favorite recent projects have been:
-Quilty (Pavement-style hard rock band)
-The Nevermind Orchestra (brass band that covers Nirvana tunes)
-Chill Sons (my own band for which I write songs, play guitar, and sing)
-Manhattan Symphonie (an entertaining symphony orchestra featuring soloists on piano, violin, saw, urdu, and tap shoes)

It is a treat to share music with others, and my lessons are fun, challenging, and engaging.

Thanks for stopping by to look at my profile! Let's hang out and do music things.

Chuck was terrific with both my five year old son learning to play for the first time and my more experienced husband learning to refine his skills and progress further with theory. He is excellent with children and my son keeps asking if he can come everyday.

Alaina C.

Roslindale, MA

About Alaina

ABOUT ME

I began taking both voice and piano lessons at the age of 11, after years of sitting outside my older sisters' clarinet lessons and wishing to study music, myself. I fell in love with music at my very first lesson, and knew that it was what I would do with my life. I went on to attend New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where I received my Bachelor of Music in vocal performance, and then onto Longy School of Music of Bard College, where I am currently working on my Masters in vocal performance and continuing piano as a secondary instrument. I am the co-owner of The Creativ
e Musician and have experience teaching piano students ranging from 4-year-old beginners to experienced adults and voice students ranging from novices to conservatory-bound high-school seniors. I am currently located in Roslindale, MA, and am available to teach both in my studio and in students' homes in the Roslindale/Jamaica Plain/West Roxbury area.

LESSON DETAILS

First and foremost, I always strive to make lessons engaging, enjoyable, and gently challenging. Mastering something that you find difficult is one of the most rewarding aspects of music lessons, and I believe that all students are capable of surpassing their own expectations and surprising themselves with their abilities. I try to create a welcoming and creative learning environment where students will feel comfortable exploring new techniques and ways of thinking about music.

Musical literacy and a healthy technique are vitally important for both pianists and singers in any genre, and I hope to impart this to my students while helping them to discover the joy of music and performance. I tailor lessons to help each individual student reach his/her goals, and welcome all ages and levels into my studio.

STUDIO

My home studio has a grand piano and a seating/waiting area for parents and siblings.

STUDENT MATERIALS

I will provide reference books and other teaching materials that will be used in lessons. I expect my students to have a piano (or full-sized keyboard with 88 weighted keys, an attached pedal, and a proper bench) for home practice and to reimburse me for books to be used at home.

Drum
My official drum guru!

I started taking lessons from Rob about 2003. I have found him to be a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Believe it or not, not every good musician can both play AND teach with competence. Rob can do both. He has vast technical skills but he also plays "music" with passion and musicality. I have also found Rob to be extremely sharing and generous beyond expectations.
What are you waiting for? Take some lessons!

!

The single most important influence on my musical career has unquestionably been the great Rob Eagan. Unlike many teachers out there, Rob teaches you how to be an all around musician and not just a drummer. He then encourages you to take your skills out into the real world by introducing you to people in your age group and beyond.

Without Rob I would not have been able to come out of my shell to pursue music in the way that I did. I cannot recommend him enough.

Bil M.

Dorchester Center, MA

About Bil

I am one of those individuals for whom teaching is just something that I have to do. I started giving music lessons sometime in the 80’s and have loved working with all levels of skill and experience. My students say that I am patient, adaptive and encouraging, committed to making music fun.

I have a Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in Jazz Piano and am comfortable and fluent in a number of musical styles, including pop, rock, gospel, traditional hymnody, jazz, and R&B. Although I love and study classical music, it is not something I teach at this point.

In addition to
private lessons and performing, I do music transcription, workshops, and all forms of vocal and instrumental arranging. Having served as a church musician for more than 30 years, I currently co-lead the worship team at Life Church in Boston with my wife. I recently signed on as the keyboard player for Tall Enough, a Boston-based alternative rock band. I often find myself involved in city-wide music events in Boston’s faith-based community, most recently arranging music and directing a 60-voice choir for Boston Night of Worship.

I enjoy my morning coffee, finding new guitar chords, creating killer PowerPoint presentations, and watching how fast my teenage daughter can text her friends.

*** Lesson Details ***
My priority as a teacher is to make the learning process fun, life-giving, and productive. I teach with patience and humor, at a challenging but not frustrating pace.

Some quotes from my students:
“I absolutely love learning from Bil! I’ve watched my playing and the playing of others at church vastly improve as a result of his training.”

“[Bil] is filled with a large amount of knowledge, so while sitting under him you not only learn about how to play but you learn about music history and theory. Beyond being a good teacher he is genuine and friendly and cares about others.”

“I have really enjoyed working with Bil. His patience and wealth of knowledge has helped me come out of my musical shell and has encouraged me to discover my musical voice.”

“Bil makes learning theory fun! His deep understanding of music is complemented by his contagious enthusiasm.”

There are at least two ways that might set me apart from other teachers.

Firstly, I have honed and developed "people skills". I am an ordained minister and have held positions where I was formally and informally in a mentoring/pastoring role. I bring that sensitivity to my music lessons, understanding that personal and emotional issues can be triggered by the engagement with the music and skills being worked on.

Secondly, I've had a remarkable broad base of experience. My coursework has exposed me to a wide breadth of ideas and tools; my work life has been long and varied; I have had extensive experience in many different cultural contexts, both musically and otherwise; and I work well with many age groups and skill levels.

Regarding my teaching approach:
For beginners, I have a fairly consistent set of topics and skill sets to cover. Generally, in a few months, piano students (particularly those in middle school through adulthood) should know how to play major, minor and seventh chords, how to read simple chord charts and some very basic accompanying skills. Guitar students should know a dozen open chords and have been introduced to barre chords, and to have learned several styles of finger picking as well as strumming. Bass students should know how to find notes on the board and will have begun to learn how to fill out a song with an expressive but non-obtrusive bass line.

For intermediate students, the pace, direction and focus on lessons depends upon the goals and passions of the student along with the amount of time he or she has to practice. My goals for students at this level and beyond is to learn how to learn. I will use outstanding recorded examples of particular skills or stylistic idioms to help my students understand and master each new concept. I often will check in with my student to make sure that we are on track with what they are hoping for.

For advanced students, we will generally target very specific objectives. I also try to add elements of theory, history, culture, and even life lessons to apply to the topics we address. Because of my background in pastoral ministry, I can serve as a mentor addressing the emotional and relational issues of playing music as well as its technical aspects.

*** Studio Equipment ***
upstairs music room: fender Rhodes piano, keyboards, amps, drum set, seating for parents

*** Travel Equipment ***
if for guitar or bass, that instrument; I expect piano students to have an available piano and for other students to have their own instrument(s).

*** Specialties ***
strong in jazz, rock, pop, gospel, sacred, R&B.

His method of teaching is amazing. He makes music accessible and joyful. I feel challenged without being intimidated. This experience is so valuable because of his ability to bring out the musician inside of me and to help me understand why and how to make beautiful sounds.

A born teacher

Bill is a remarkable teacher. After 22 years of not playing I am truly grasping music theory which is opening my ears and hands up to music in a way that I have never experienced. Bill's teaching style is mellow and exciting at the same time, he is clear with the information and can sense when I get it and when I don't. His communication relates so well to tangible examples that I am able to grasp that it is making the learning easy and fun. Bill is quick with praise and kind with corrections.I look forward to seeing him every week.

I went into working with Holbrook on the recommendation of the TakeLessons staff, after a bit of trouble trying to find the right person, namely because I had set a high order — I wanted someone to essentially give me a crash course in production, somehow helping me make an actual record out of a bunch of vocal song offerings.

It worked out a million times better than I'd expected! I went in there, with my big, presumptuously tall order, and Holbrook was wonderful about doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of making instrumental tracks around my vocals. I explained as best I could my vision for each song, and Holbrook would try out a variety of tempos and rhythms for each — and if I felt one wasn't working, he was completely fine with giving me something more to my liking. He was also approachable, relaxed, and good at explaining basic, simple things in music production to a green beginner, and showing me how I could do many of the steps myself in the future.

I highly recommend him to anyone who wants an instructor in music production and engineering. If he could teach me, he can probably teach anyone!

If you plan on learning or furthering your guitar knowledge I highly recommend Holbrook .
I've taken lessons with other teachers in the past but I must say Holbrook is the type of teacher that figures out your learning style ( yes we all have one ) , he'll take the time to find your strength and weaknesses as to make each less as beneficial as possible . I'm very fortunate to have him as a teacher !!
