Geoff A.

Hillsboro, OR

About Geoff

I am a professional musician with a career spanning 40 years (touring and studio work), and 30 years teaching music.

What do you want to learn? How far you go is up to you!

*** Lesson Details ***
BEGINNING students start with the fundamentals, what you must know in order to begin playing songs, all the right ingredients to create a solid foundation. You will be encouraged to study and to venture into the unknown, using what you're learning as a springboard to discover new things.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED players will be assessed on knowledge and abilities; areas of struggle and what i
s desired to be learned. Within a couple weeks, you will reap the benefits with new ideas bubbling to the surface moving you closer to your goals, with emphasis that short term goals are important as well.

Everyone learns at a different pace. But with patience and persistence, if you do the work, there will be results that can be measured, and you will achieve success!

*** Studio Equipment ***
I provide an amplifier for guitar and bass students, and have a piano for piano students.

*** Specialties ***
Having played many styles over the years, I am able to play in most of the popular forms. All music is based on the same fundamental things. It's how they are used that defines a given style.

About Joel

Joel J. took his first guitar lesson in September 1980. A lifelong student and teacher of guitar and improvisation, Joel began playing in bands at age 14. Seeking a higher awareness of guitar, he left school at U-Michigan to study at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA. While there, he received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. He currently plays with Portland area blues-rock band The Fabulous Badcats, and co-hosts an open jam every week in SE Portland. *** Lesson Details ***
Lessons with Joel are like Choose Your Own Adventure stories. The curriculum is based on the Performance programs of Berklee College and Musician's Institute, with supplements by Mel Bay, Hal Leonard, and including the music of YOUR FAVORITE ARTIST. We will navigate through a rigorous study of the instrument, including metronome study, sight-reading and notation, ear training and everything else. But once we cover the basics, the course will take the direction of your interests and what is fueling your fire. Keeping true to what motivates you will keep the lessons interesting even when the commitment becomes difficult..and it will..but as you may already know, nothing worth having is easily achieved. Come take a deep look at the most popular and versatile instrument of the modern age, and master your own style of guitar playing with a teacher whose own commitment to music education is absolute.

Each lesson is customized to your learning style and different for everyone depending on what you want to learn. Most of my students like to learn from scratch which would include the following:

um, mute, & play notes on the guitar.

We can play as a band too. When you are ready, I love to bring out the drum or backing tracks to your favorite artists songs while you play guitar and I play what your not, giving you the feel of a live group situation that can make learning at your lesson more fun.

Genres include Acoustic, Blues, Country, R&B, Funk, Latin, Jazz, Rock, Pop and more.

Last November I began playing the guitar. Like most beginners I learned the basic chords (G,C,D,etc.). It wasn't much but you'd be surprised how many songs you could play with these few chords.

A few months ago, I decided it was time to learn more and sharpen my skills... starting with the basics (including reading guitar music). I decided to check out TakeLessons because I knew I could have the lessons in the comfort of my own home. So, I began researching and found Tim's profile.

If you are looking for a solid foundation in learning the guitar and feeling encouraged to push through (even if you think you can't play that one chord) I'd highly recommend Tim. Tim provides students with a guitar manual that is easy to understand and helps build one skill at a time. Like building a brick wall, the book has you put one brick on top of the other as you go through the book. In time, you will be surprised how much you've learned!

Beginners, Intermediate/Advance players if you're looking for a guitar teacher that will help you sharpen your skills and encourage you along the way... I'd highly recommend him as a guitar teacher!
