Pleasant Surprise

I currently have my daughter, age 8, enrolled in singing lessons with Ben. Previously, we had her starting lessons with the most popular teacher on this site, Lisa, with the highest number of reviews and were disappointed. She didn't seem to really invest in my daughters training. It seemed like a factory mill - student in, student out, next student in. I pulled her out after 5 lessons and went with Ben. It soon dawned on me that we had made a very good choice. Ben teaches the fundamentals first so that your child has a strong toolkit and foundation to succeed, which we weren't really getting from the previous instructor. He is very professional and takes what he does seriously and has made me feel that he cares about my daughter's progress. Additionally, he is affable and my daughter enjoys her lessons with him.

Professional, skilled instructor who has deep knowledge in music theory

I am a beginner in piano and have taken piano lesson from Ben for 2 months. Ben is a very professional instructor who has both the technical skills and a deep knowledge of musical theory. I learned not just the techniques for improving my piano performance skills, but also some intriguing music theory behind the pieces. The lessons are also well organized and it felt the hour goes by fairly swiftly.

Ben takes student's learning serious but still maintains a friendly and easy-going manner. The lessons usually provided at a musical instrument shop that is very convenient and cozy. Overall I am very satisfied with my experience.

Amazing technical knowledge...excellent instructor...very talented

From the first lesson, I could tell from Ben's singing and piano abilities that he was very talented with a lot of experience in music&music instruction. He is very clear with his instruction, extremely professional so it's so cool how down to earth he is. He even spent outside time helping me find a few things that would help advance my vocal abilities quicker. I really appreciate his time and hard work. Be advised: This man is SERIOUS about music (but that's a good thing)...

Joel J. took his first guitar lesson in September 1980. A lifelong student and teacher of guitar and improvisation, Joel began playing in bands at age 14. Seeking a higher awareness of guitar, he left school at U-Michigan to study at Musician's Institute in Hollywood, CA. While there, he received a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. In 1997 he received his B.M.S. in Professional Music with a concentration in Private Instruction and Studio Arranging from Berklee. Sarah C. Portland, OR

About Sarah

I teach vocal technique to recording artists, singers interested in starting or joining bands, people looking to do musical theater, do some opera, and anyone who just wants to sound great around the campfire. My students learn how to embellish the things they like about their voices and make them sound unique, while at the same time defeating tension and poor vocal technique. I also work on shaping the whole performer, from stage presence to microphone control. My instrumental students work on both classical and modern music. If you are interested in learning how to read music, chords, charts, compose or just learn some basics I am happy to help you with that. Optional recitals are held two times a year. I have a Bachelors of Music, Vocal Performance at the University

Solid Fundamentals, Spiced with Laughter

Sarah's approach to teaching voice--from a classical background of good form and breath control--instills confidence and forms a solid basis for wherever you want to go. Add to that her great good humor, and every class is a pleasure.

Emily S. Portland, OR

About Emily

Music is my life! I started studying at the age of 7 and never looked back. I'm about to graduate with my degree in vocal performance and have already completed my pedagogy requirements. I have 4 years of teaching experience, and 10+ years of performing experience. Currently I primarily perform opera, however I have extensive experience in musical theater, and have performed solo jazz and in vocal jazz ensembles. I am comfortable teaching any of these styles, though of course when it comes to opera younger students will start with art song and other classical styles that are more suited to the less mature voice. *** Lesson Details *** I take a very kinesthetic approach to teaching. I have training in body mapping, and find it extremely useful in teaching students from ages 5-100. ...

I cannot recommend Emily highly enough! She has taught me so much in just 2 lessons! I'm preparing for an audition for a singing group and whether or not I get in, I'm going to keep taking lessons because she's such an amazing teacher. I haven't sung in a while and I was afraid that my voice would never be the same now that I'm older. But she is helping me get back into shape and, in fact, I sound better than ever because now I'm learning the proper technique. She is extremely knowledgeable, knows exactly how to help me with mechanics, expression, musicality, presence--everything. I highly recommend her to all aspiring singers of any age :)

Emily has a lot of experience in a leadership and teaching capacity, having been the leader of the student group, Student Opera Association of PSU and working at a Camp specifically designed for children with cancer. She has a firm understanding of vocal technique and is very good at connecting with people of all ages, backgrounds and level/ability. If you have a son/daughter who is interested in singing, contact Emily. She will get them off to a strong start and have them learning a strong foundation for healthy technique and singing.

About Nick

***About Me*** Music is almost more than a passion for me, it's how I hear the world! That guy singing the harmony to the crosswalk jingle? That's me. Though my love for music began long before I ever picked up an instrument, I began taking guitar lessons at age 10. By age 12 I was writing music and by 13 I played my music at my first talent show with my band. In high school I started studying piano and voice, and performed with the Guitar Program, Jazz Ensemble and Men's Choir. I played solo and with multiple bands, playing rock, acoustic, jazz, rock, metal and classical guitar. After High School I spent a year studying music at University of Oregon. Though I enjoyed my time at U of O, I left the next year and moved to Boston to study at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, ...

My 9 year old told me Nick is the best piano teacher ever. He loves going to his lessons and is progressing nicely I think. When my son goes off on a tangent or wants to talk about the billion things going on in his head at the moment, Nick is super patient and gently steers him back on track.

Tim B. Newberg, OR

About Tim

I love to help anyone who has been told they're not able to play guitar, has quit out of frustration, or been told they're too old or too young to play. *** Lesson Details *** Each lesson is customized to your learning style and different for everyone depending on what you want to learn. Most of my students like to learn from scratch which would include the following: In the first 3 lessons you will learn basic guitar fundamentals, basic 1-4-5 song progressions (the stuff that 85% of all music we listen to is made up of), left hand / right hand coordination, picking techniques, how to strum, mute, & play notes on the guitar. We can play as a band too. When you are ready, I love to bring out the drum or backing tracks to your favorite artists songs while you play guitar and I play ...

Ace professional with first class treatment

Tim is a phenomenal instructor! I have tried expensive videos subscription services and have spent hundreds of dollars on Skype lessons with popular YouTube instructors. In the year that I have been playing, one month of lessons with Tim did more for my playing than 11 months with the other methods I've tried. You owe it to yourself to give Tim a month of your time. He transformed my understanding of the guitar, has taught me to be self-sufficient with learning songs I hear, and has made playing exciting. Without being able to articulate exactly what I wanted to accomplish, Tim's uncanny intuition for balancing what I think I needed with what I really need took my playing to the next level very quickly. Nothing can substitute the depth of his musical knowledge, but more importantly, his keen sense of feeding me just what I need from everything he knows. Tim carefully plans out a lesson for me based off of my progress, has me take notes, and gives me ideas on how to improve before my next lesson. The most exciting day of my week is the hour I spend learning from a great instructor and a great human being. I couldn't be happier with my decision to learn how to play from Tim.

He made learning fun & easy.

Great guy, great teacher. Took the time and focused on me during the entire lesson. Geared the lessons specifically for me and my interests and tastes in music. Took a personal interest in me as a person and encouraged me to practice and to explore all the different things I could do with my talent. Would definitely recommend to anyone. Very reasonably priced for all that you get out of the lessons.

My son learned how to effectively play in a band

My son has been taking guitar lessons from Tim for over a year now. I have been very pleased with the progress my son is making. Tim makes my son feel very comfortable, and is more than willing to work with him in any area where he shows an interest. Tim is personable and patient.

Tim is quite flexible with time. He has kindly worked around our schedule whenever necessary. His fees are quite reasonable, and he always errs in our favor in regard to time.

Tim is a great guitar player himself with a true love for the instrument, which shows in his teaching. He was invaluable in helping us pick a reasonably priced, yet quality guitar for our son.

He has taught our son any song my son hears on the radio note for note a real gem.We are quite pleased with Tim's teaching, and highly recommend him.
