I have over 35 years of experience teaching cello. Every student has different needs; I work with you at whatever point you are at; beginners through advanced students welcome. I have a doctorate in cello.

I recommend lessons 30 minutes in duration for beginners, particularly children; adult beginners can choose 30 or 45 minutes. Students who can play longer pieces definitely need a little longer lesson so we get through everything. (Please note that I do not take children under 10 years of age; there are other teachers who are better teaching younger kids.)

I use Suzuki books for their inexpensive repertoire but I do not teach using the Suzuki method nor do I teach rote playing. I supplement these books with technique materials from Rick Mooney (Position Pieces, Thumb Position) and studies by cellist-composers of the past. If you have an interest in another area of playing, let's talk and find pieces that interest you.

Chris has been spot-on in figuring out exactly where I'm starting (lots of musical training but have been away from an instrument for ~10 years). And he makes it fun - the take-home practice exercises right from the start made me appreciate that I'm working towards playing songs. Would highly recommend!

I tailor my guitar lessons to each of my students so that they can improve their skills in areas that interest them the most whether that be acoustic, electric, blues, classical, jazz, or country. This teaching approach, combined with my extensive and diverse guitar style background fosters the most efficient path of growth for my students. Furthermore, I can offer to teach students how to both sing and play guitar as I studied both guitar and voice for over 7 years.

My qualifications:
I've studied the guitar for seven years focusing on sight reading, playing by ear, understanding chord structures, and music theory. I've played in a rock band in college, I played guitar in Kenyon's Jazz Strings ensemble, I've also performed in bars in Paris. Additionally, I'm always ready to learn new styles or help my students learn songs that they're interested to play.

About Jean-Louis

As a music instructor, I am eager to cater to the needs of each individual child and to provide them with engaging musical experiences in supportive environments. I have previously provided violin, viola, and piano lessons to students of all ages both through Thompson Tutoring in Portage, Michigan and Reverb Lessons in Chicago, Illinois. I have approximately six years of private teaching experience.

I typically provide beginning piano lessons to young students, and frequently utilize the Faber Piano Adventures method books. I learned piano at a young age myself before revisiting the instrument for two years during my undergraduate studies.

I recently graduated from Roosevelt University's Chicago College of Performing Arts with a Master of Music Degree in Viola Performance. In 2016, I graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Viola Performance and Spanish. My performance experience includes both local and international venues. Whether you want to learn to fingerpick Blackbird by the Beatles or strum basic chords to play your favorite songs, in our lessons you will learn everything from the anatomy of the guitar, how to hold it, to tips and tricks to build up calluses. Learning guitar can be challenging because of the initial learning curve (it can really hurt your fingers!), but in your first lesson, you will be strumming chords, within a couple of weeks (or faster!) you will be ready to play four-chord songs.

Your lessons will be customized to whatever your goals are, whether that be singing while playing guitar, performing, or writing songs.

"Damien is the best instructor I have ever had and I took lessons from multiple teachers for over 15 years for piano, keyboards, and guitar. He is extremely knowledgeable, talented, and personable. He has a structured and comprehensive approach to music theory and teaches from a socratic method which I love, although he tailors his approach to fit each student's personality and skill level. I have had instructors in the past who taught by ear and could not increase my knowledge base or skill level in reading music and understanding music theory. Damien's style and approach is driven by his education and experience and is the best I have ever encountered. If you want to just have a little fun learning a few chords and songs, or you want to become an accomplished musician, he is the best choice."

"I am at the mid point of my 8 lessons with Randall. I began my lessons as a firm believer I didn't have a music bone in my body. I was tone deaf. I couldn't learn music.
Since I started my harmonica lessons began, Randall has helped me throw these self imposed restrictions in the trash can. I hear musical notes now. When I whistle, I can tell i'm off tune with the song. And I'm playing, although slowly, songs I love on a musical instrument. And I'm not talking Hot Cross Buns or the song about wondering what a Twinkling Star is. (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, how I wonder what you are....you obviously know what it is, you just called it by name?!)
I'm talking Killing Me Softly, and Patience by Guns N' Roses.
Randall always infuses musical history within the lessons, which I find as valuable as the lesson themselves. During the lesson, when trying to help demonstrate how the song goes, Randall will pull out an additional instrument and play along side me. I'm literally playing music with someone, I never thought I was capable of this! It's very exciting for a musical novice.
Randall also emphasizes learning the right way, at the right speed. As I was racing through Patience with little grace, he gave me this feedback.
"Do we want to play this song like Axel Rose, heck yeah we do! And we will! But for now, lets slow it down and learn it correctly." He wants his students to learn the right way, so when it's time, they play their instrument at a high level.

My lessons have been an all encompassing educational experience.
If you are interested in learning a musical instrument, in a fun atmosphere from a passionate music professional, you should book Randall ASAP."
