About Ryan
Ryan is a musician from Jefferson Park who plays a plethora of different instruments. He specializes in guitar, banjo, mandolin and ukulele, but also dabbles in accordion, piano, drums, harmonica and several others. Learning to play instruments is one of the true pleasures in his life and he hopes he can make it one of yours, too.

As a teacher Ryan's goals are fairly simple. First and foremost he wants to make his lessons comfortable, interesting and fun. A close second is to build a strong foundation on the basics, so as we learn more advanced techniques we have a solid base of technique to build upon. And third, an understanding of the theory and history behind the music is a great way to engage in the music beyond just the rote learning of technique.

After a brief foray in physics, Ryan settle into a degree in music at the Univer
sity of Illinois, specializing in Ethnomusicology (the study of music of different cultures). This education gave him a strong background in music theory and history in the Western tradition, but also opened him up to a vast experience of a diverse cross section of music from around the world. His insatiable love for learning new instruments started here, where he studied music from West Africa to Bali.

Currently Ryan is a co-lead singer, songwriter and stringed instrument player for the local band Distant Brothers, a folk rock band based out of Chicago. They play venues throughout the Midwest, with some of the notable venues being House of Blues, Metro and Cubby Bear in Chicago. Another highlight of his time with the band has been a collaboration with Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra, where he not only was able to play in collaboration with the orchestra, but joined in the arranging and conceptualization of some of the pieces played.

Love that my 11 year old can take the lessons from home. He is in a car a lot of the week, so being able to not loose time over sitting in traffic yet again, is really fantastic.
I don’t stay in the room for his classes, but what I notice with Ryan, is that my son is making steady progress and is taking up the banjo every day to practice, without me having to tell him too. That, to me, is an accomplishment on its own :)
Love these lessons, love Ryan who is friendly, relaxed and practical. Two thumbs up.

Ryan is very flexible and accommodating. I took a banjo lesson and a mandolin lesson from him. He helped me transition easily between instruments. He also was most willing to indulge my love of Irish music. I found him to be relaxed and yet encouraging.

About Clayton
I'm a professional drummer and songwriter hailing from Massachusetts. I have been drumming seriously for 14 years and I received my Bachelor of Arts in Jazz Performance from the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver. I am versatile in a variety of styles from Reggae, Rock, Blues, Jazz, and Hip-Hop and many more. I bring an element of discovery to my drum lessons, because I believe that I am learning along with my students.

Drummers who study under me can expect to improve week to week. Together we will improve your improvisation, stick control, speed, and sight-reading. Lessons will be catered to your proficiency level and your personal goals for being a drummer.

Outside of teaching and school, I am a member of three bands. My indie rock band Specific Ocean has released our first single and will be releasing our debut EP
very soon. We will be playing in the 18th annual Underground Music Showcase on July 27th. We have also played mainstays of the Denver scene such as the Larimer Lounge and Lost Lake. My second band is the neo-soul infused funk band Sol Burial. I also play in a free-jazz group called Deals Deals Deals.

I am very excited to extend my passion for the drums and music to you and help you to improve your skills on the set instantly. I look forward to meeting you and helping you grow as a musician!

About Monica
Hey! I’m Monica I’m a student at St Edwards University in Austin I began playing piano at 5 years old and ever since it’s been my passion. I love teaching piano it’s a fun experience to see how students are able to excel so rapidly. I’ve not only been teaching students how to play piano but music theory, history, ear training, and much more. My favorite genre is classical yet I am a strong believer in being versatile in all scopes of music. I base my curriculum off of the requirements needed to keep up with the expectatoins made by the royal conservatory of music. By doing this the student can test for certificates that provide more of a professional background to their piano education. I am flexible to what the student wishes to learn while following curriculum, if the student wishes to learn a piece I will see how we can achieve that.

About Claudia
Over 30 years teaching students of all levels: children, adults, professionals/teacher training. Professor at Hunter College and on faculty at Manhattan School of Music Pre-college.

I feel responsible to get my students excited about classical music and pique their curiosity about contemporary music. These students are the future of our art, if not as performers, then definitely as audiences, patrons and administrators. It is our mandate to guide these students to appreciate and understand how the study of music will enhance their lives, no matter what field they choose.

Music is an essential aspect of who we are as human beings. My goal, then, is to develop in students a love of music, and an enjoyment of learning how to play the piano. I host performance opportunities for students to perform on stage, as well as piano parties an
d piano 4-hands group-a-thons. I use technology when appropriate to help kids get excited about learning.

I’m often asked whether I enjoy starting young children at the piano. My answer is always the same: give me a student, and I will be thrilled to guide my pupil and get him or her excited about studying. The age is unimportant. The challenge is keeping a student engaged and enthusiastic along with the hard work that goes into training. No matter the student’s age or level, educators have an enormous responsibility to create and nurture life learners, and to ignite a curiosity and passion for the arts.

What matters, then, is to develop the skills inherent to studying music: discipline, inquisitiveness, problem-solving, and, most importantly, active and acute listening.

Our 10 year old son began learning from Claudia nearly 3 years ago. We all love her! We weren't sure if he would enjoy learning the piano, but Claudia ignited his interest and he has been very engaged ever since. The hour that he spends with her each week is rigorous, yet it passes quickly and he always leaves with a smile. His level of playing far surpasses our expectations. Each week, she emails us a custom practice log with notes about which pieces he should study. She is thoughtful about making sure that he has a grounding in the mechanics, while enabling his talent and natural feel for music. Each piece that he is assigned to play is purposeful and he really enjoys his repertoire. We are due to purchase a piano and Claudia is giving us tips in that process as well. We feel so lucky to have found Claudia!
