James W.

Hendersonville, TN

About James

I worked for Eddie Van Halen for five years in the 1990's in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles and was instrumental in providing help with development of the Peavey Wolfgang and Wolfgang Special Guitar by providing feedback on the prototypes Eddie was designing at the time. I learned a lot from Eddie and his brother Alex about music and the music industry. (All you have to do is pay attention! ) I have played in bands from Hollywood to Toronto and back both as a singer songwriter and guitarist. I bring the Musicians Institute way to the table and get things up and running quickly. I help s
tudents get it under their fingers fast and get it right the first time.

I believe in sharing the happiness of making music with anyone who loves music and the guitar in particular. I do my very best to get you playing the songs you love in Pop, Rock, Jazz and Folk Music of your choice. Today's modern new guitars are easy to play and you will enjoy learning Guitar right away. That is how it should be.
When you study there is a basic understanding of Guitar to be learned that allows an ease of use for anyone for years to come. This will help you reach your goal and improve each week. My students learn to practice in a way that feels comfortable and makes sense. This takes all the stress out of learning and gives everyone something to smile about and look forward to each week.

The good feeling of playing along with friends and taking a solo is within every students grasp. I will show you the way there. And with a solid and straightforward approach to the theory as it applies directly to the guitar you will feel confident and unafraid of any music endeavor. We'll cover harmony and fingerboard theory and give you a road map of the guitar neck that makes it a pleasure to play. You learn the basics and much more than you thought possible retaining 90 percent of what you learn!

Having been a student myself I was deeply involved in music since age 12 and played in bands and duos for over 15 years . I can help you to be a well rounded player and performer with a smile, a laugh and a joy for music whether your in a band or a budding solo artist.

*** Lesson Details ***
Most students want to play the Guitar to play their favorite songs and I'm the same way. Music is something we carry with us in our hearts and minds. Students will learn what they wish to learn and work at a pace that is comfortable to them. Whether you are a student, “weekend warrior” or a parent whose child has expressed an interest in Guitar anyone can learn all there is to know about Harmony and Theory for the Guitar and how to play their favorite songs.

We cover theory in an easy and straightforward no nonsense way in the first half of each lesson and then apply it to the song you wish to learn. This creates an atmosphere where you understand and feel at home with the Guitar. You get an understanding right away and because it is immediately fun it allows you to feel comfortable at any level. Music is fun, and songs are the creative expression of what we feel. Combining theory and the freedom to play and sing songs allows us to express ourselves through music.
After 6 months students will have a solid foundation in theory, and a road map of the guitar fretboard enabling them to advance to an intermediate level if they are ready to do so. Students will know enough that music as it relates to the Guitar, which is the world’s most popular instrument in contemporary music, is not a mystery but is a welcome friend. And they will be able to play songs by popular artists and advance at a pace that is satisfying and enjoyable.

What James spouse says about working on songwriting with him:

"James is my husband for over 10 years now. Over the years, I have seen James give guidance and counsel to many hopeful musicians of all ages, and inspire others about how music influences and benefits our lives. I would highly recommend James to anyone who wants to learn guitar, voice, music theory, and acting. James is a great talent, and study with him would benefit anyone with the sincere desire to grow as an artist. When we married, I had fallen in love with James’ conversational style, and his vast knowledge of music. When I heard him play guitar, I knew that I wanted to write songs with him, and we released our first album, in 2012 on iTunes."

James is the most encouraging a positive teacher I have ever had. He sends me emails and links every day to help educate me a spur me on. He gears the lessons to exactly what I want to learn, and he gives me new ideas for developing mu musical and writing gifts and talents, as well as ideas on how to stay healthy, which is a must for any performing artist. He is very kind and compassionate, definitely several points above average.

Julie L.

Hermitage, TN

About Julie

I am passionate about Music and Music Education. It's rewarding for me to watch my students develop in their musical skill and enjoy making music more and more. My students range from the very young (4 years old) to school age children, to teens, and adults. My students benefit from my expertise in teaching Vocal and Piano music, my knowledge of Music Theory, and my encouraging teaching style. I have been involved in making music since I was a young child, and I have been teaching private students since I was a Music major at the University of Florida in 1982 when a fellow college student as
ked me to teach her voice lessons. I have a Music Education degree from the University of Florida; my major instrument was Voice, my minor was Piano. I taught as a public school music educator in Florida, California, and Tennessee between the years of 1983 to 1997. I taught private students after school in my classroom while I was a public school teacher, and from my home since 1997. My post-graduate continuing professional education includes Tennessee Arts Academy at Belmont University, Kodaly Pedagogy and Solfege Level 1 (vocal teaching techniques, do-re-mi, ear training), Orff-Schulwerk Music for Children Level 1 certification, Yamaha M.I.E. (Music In Education) Piano Lab certification. My professionalism and expertise are at your service. I will work together with you to insure an enjoyable and informative learning experience.

*** Lesson Details ***
A typical lesson in my studio would begin with a brief question/answer time with the student to learn how their week has gone, and how their music practice is progressing.

For PIANO LESSONS we begin with Technique including scales and dexterity exercises, then we play from the Lesson book and a Recital selection. I typically let the student play through the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to play the piece again. After that we go over the Theory assignments, and do Ear Training exercises. I am comfortable teaching from a variety of different methods courses. The methods course is chosen according to the student's interest. I never require a piano student to continue using books that are not inspiring. There so many methods courses available, that a student may always be able to have methods books they LOVE.

In my SINGING LESSONS we also begin with a recap of the student's week. Then we continue with Warm Up exercises to prepare the student's voice for the lesson. Then we study Sight Singing and Solfege Singing (do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) to increase the student's listening skills. After that the student sings their selections. Like I do in Piano lessons, I listen to the pieces they have prepared without interruption, then I call attention to corrections that need to be made, I demonstrate the correction, and then ask the student to sing the piece again. I am comfortable teaching many styles of vocal music including classical, Broadway, pop, rock, and Christian.

For MUSIC THEORY lessons, the study material is chosen according to the student's interest and age. Topics include notation, chord structure, chord progression, melodic structure, and harmony. I also incorporate Music Listening in the Music Theory lesson in order to learn from the masters in many styles of music. My Music Theory students will also have the opportunity to develop composition and songwriting skills if they desire.

My teaching style is structured and friendly, keeping the student's goals and interests at the forefront. I enjoy motivating students to reach their highest potential.
After 3 to 6 months in my studio my students will see improvement in their musical technique, ear training, music reading, notation, and knowledge. They will be preparing recital pieces for an upcoming performance. I provide two recital opportunities a year: in December, and in May. Most importantly, the student's love and appreciation of music will be growing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living Room: piano near front entryway, couch, loveseat, over-sized chair, dining room table, open space, end table with chair, parents can sit in on lesson.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson books, the students should provide their instrument.

I do have a mobile keyboard to bring for SINGING lessons.

*** Specialties ***

Julie is an excellent teacher and professional. Her knowledge base is incredible; she absolutely is a master. She knows exactly how to reach my 5-year-old and my 11-year-old, and teach them where they are. She stretches them, and it is amazing to see how far they've come in just a short while. Julie teaches them piano in a multitude of ways: they listen, they play, they move, they sing, they read, they study, they write. It's so much more than just sitting at the piano and playing notes. My children are learning to MAKE MUSIC and it is a beautiful thing. I'm very happy we found Julie Lopez.

We love Julie! I have a degree in music and used to teach guitar so I know what to expect from a good teacher. Julie is wonderful! She is organized, professional, knowledgeable and (most importantly) a good communicator with our children. Our son was never into piano lessons with previous teachers. After switching to Julie, he actually like piano lessons. Our daughter is very driven and loves piano which she has been studying for years now. Julie also excels in pushing her at a much higher level. It's nice to have a teacher who can push the advanced student as well as inspire the early student. She has even started voice lessons with our son who loves every minute of his lesson. We can't praise Julie enough. Quit looking for other teachers and hire Julie!

John P.

Hendersonville, TN

About John

You’ve surely heard the old refrain: “I took piano lessons as a kid, but I don’t play anymore.” That makes as much sense to me as saying, “I rode a bike as a kid but not now.” If learned properly, the piano can provide anyone with a lifetime of recreation and pleasure.
Hi, my name is John, and I am an experienced pianist, educator and music journalist. I am the Nashville Scene’s classical music critic, and over the years I have written about music for The Washington Post and National Public Radio, among other places. I have also been an adjunct associate professor at Vanderbilt University’s B
lair School of Music and teach privately in my own studio. I am a very patient and nurturing teacher, but I am also methodical, which is a huge benefit for my students. In short order, they all become comfortable and confident at the keyboard.

He is patient and encouraging with my son, and he makes lessons fun with inventive and creative approaches that match the individual learning style of each student. He also adapts the pace of the lessons to the progress of the child to always keep things challenging. My son has progressed from beginner to accomplished player of Mozart, Chopin, and Beethoven under John's instruction. I highly recommend this teacher!

Zach taught both my 7 yr old son and my 11 yr old daughter piano. They both had other instructors previously and were losing steam/interest. Zach really reignited their interest in learning piano. They both performed beautifully at the piano recital here in town. We were REALLY sad to see him leave.

Zach taught my 7 yo daughter piano and we were so sad he moved from our area!! My daughter had never touched a piano before, and within minutes, he engaged her and she was so excited to be learning! Zach has an infectious enthusiasm for all music and, coming from a family of educators, understands how to change things up if one strategy isn't working for a child. Zach is a gifted, talented musician and an awesome human. Hire him!
