About Kathryn
Kathryn K - First, let me say, I am active in passing the torch to millennials and Arts Education. Thank you to Take Lessons for making this possible to so many young people in the United States and across the world who would, otherwise, have little or no access to superb teachers. I am happy to be offering acting, singing performance, audition prep, scene study, script analysis and speaking lessons for all levels of actors, singers and those who need help with presentation work through Take Lessons. I am here to help you delve into your creativity, work and passion in a supportive way. I am a member of the SagAftra and ActorsEquity and have been for many years.
My students range from beginners to those working professionally on an ongoing basis in the Industry. I work with clients who are heads of businesses, lawyers and on air announc
ers, as well as many other individuals. My students have booked various roles in shows in the Hulu hit Chance, HBO's, Thirteen Reasons Why, Looking, Woody Allen's, Blue Jasmine, Touching Home, Generations, productions including Theatreworks, Pride and Prejudice, Berkeley Repertory's, Hand to God, and there are many more in each of these categories and countless commercials. (Nationals and Regionals) and have landed agents. Many have joined SAGAFTRA and Actors Equity or their way to becoming part of our performers unions. I am also fortunate to work with screenwriters.
My base technique is Method Acting. I am open to other techniques and studied at HB Studio in NYC.
When you study acting / singing performance w/ me you'll also learn about the BUSINESS OF SHOW BUSINESS.
We will work on technique, audition technique, monologues, scene work, as well study all aspects of acting and singing performance in order to prepare you for where you want to be as an artist.
Actors and Singers
Auditions!!
They are definitely the most difficult and nerve wracking part of being an actor or singer, right? Booking work means your audition has to be as good as opening night.
Auditioning is about preparation and preparation takes consistent support. Look, showbiz is not a business about being alone. Artists thrive when working together. We are a collaborative bunch and collaborating to make sure you're ready and organized for your auditions makes sense.
Stop trying to muscle through this necessary step alone. No one who works consistently does that! They ask for help. ASK FOR HELP!!
Solidify your acting choices so you don't have to worry about them the day before your audition. Know your prep so you can internally drop into it when the casting director says, "Whenever you're ready."
Have your music material and performance choices prepared ahead of time.
BE AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
Work with me when your agent sends you your sides so you show up READY. Know your lines. It's OK if your struggling with memorization.
Let's figure out How YOU memorize.
Let me coach you for online audition submissions.
If we are working virtually I will coach while you are taping yourself to submit your online audition. It works!
Let me collaborate with on script analysis in order for you to you understand your material before you audition.
Take your work seriously so you bring your most intelligent and inspiring work to the audition rooms.
You'll be bringing the agents, casting directors, directors, producers and writers the inspiration they crave regarding their beloved projects. Do that and you're gonna book.
I know you can work and I can't wait to make it happen with you.

Gil Gross, Host The Gil Gross Show –Radio, ABC "I have loved Kathryn's music from the day I first heard her sing, but even being a fan of her recordings did not prepare me for seeing her perform live. She is a great live performer holding her audience willing captives to each turn of a melody and the drama of every lyric. She more than sings. She inhabits a song and involves each member of the audience in its drama, joy or sorrow. There are performers for whom a performance is a night out. When Kathryn performs it’s a lifetime shared with us in a single evening. If you want to merely hear some tunes, there are many people who will do. If you want a real experience in music, there is Kathryn.
Kathryn's latest show is being created with director David Ford (Marsh Theatre) and Kevin Gerzevitz and her concerts features a who’s who list of world-renowned musicians: Gerzevitz and Grammy-Nominated Bassist, Michael Manring; Album of the Year Winner, Trumpeter, Jeff Oster; Master Percussionist, Joe Venegoni; Guitar Virtuoso, Tom Lattanand; Critically Acclaimed Pianist, Kelly Park; Celebrated Flutist, Barbara Else; and from the Steve Winwood Band, Brazilian-born Drummer, Celso Alberti.

Kathryn is an amazing teacher! I've been working with her for nearly a year now. At first I was hesitant doing classes online, but I don't regret taking the leap. I've definitely improved my acting skills in the months we've been working together; she gives great feedback and really cares about her students, not ONLY in the way of their acting skills. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants to get into acting. I started out knowing nothing and I can say 100% that what I know now is largely in part of Kathryn!

I always try and surround myself with people who give me confidence and make me better. Kathryn does both of those. She doesn't view you as a dollar sign but as an artist. She's the coach that sends you "Happy Birthday" and "Get Well Soon" texts because she genuinely cares.

I've been with her for over a year already and have no plans of stopping. Thank you so much, Kathryn. :)

About Jim
My career in music began at an early age (four!) with classical piano lessons until the age of thirteen. After expanding my musical horizons in high school listening to jazz, blues and rock I attended Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA where I studied jazz & music theory with renowned jazz educator Ray Brown and jazz piano with Paul Nagle who has worked with Grammy award winning singer Bobby McFerrin among many others.
I have been performing solo and in groups since the Eighties in a variety of different genres including rock, jazz, blues, r&b, funk, reggae and everything in between! Performing with such artists as Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), Dan Hicks, David Grisman, Tommy Castro, Eric McFadden, Mark Karan & Vinyl I have appeared at most of the major venues in the Bay Area including the Warfield Theatre, the Great American Music Hall,
Yoshi's SF, the Regency, Bimbo's & the Sweetwater.
My teaching experience goes back over twenty years and I relocated to Marin County in the Bay Area in 1995 where I've been teaching extensively since 2002. Since then I have helped hundreds of students realize their dream of learning to play piano and keyboards as well as read music, play perfectly in time and learn songwriting skills. Playing music is fun & easy......I can show you just how easy it is!!

*** Lesson Details ***
My style is laid back with a large supply of patience and devotion to my students. I teach beginning , intermediate & advanced piano and keyboards (including organ). For adult beginning piano students I use the John Thompson Modern Course for the Piano Grade One along with Thompson's Note, Scale & Chord Speller books and flash cards for a quick and easy route to learning how to read music and basic music theory. For kids (5-7) I like Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" along with the kid's music theory books by Linda Ng.
In the first six months students can expect to study basic finger exercises and scales, how to read music easily and quickly, how to play perfectly in time & develop a repertoire of songs to play. Once students have learned basic skills it is possible to explore many different genres including classical, jazz, blues, rock, reggae and much more. I customize the lessons to fit each student's needs and desires and can also help the students with songwriting and learning from the recorded works of great artists!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Beautiful 1884 carved English maplewood Estey upright piano!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide the books and supplies at cost...students should have some kind of keyboard to practice on...preferably a real piano although I have taught many students initially on electric keyboards.

*** Specialties ***
I teach beginning, intermediate & advanced piano in the styles of classical, jazz, blues, rock, r&b, pop, country, etc. ages 5-105! Usually I start beginners in the John Thompson method & speller books along with music flash cards and then am willing to shift into different styles as the students gain basic skills.

Great teacher for children, including jazz

Our 3 kids have taken piano lessons at our house with Jim for 6 years. Jim is a unique piano teacher, the kind that is hard to find in the bay area. He teaches classical music to beginners and confirmed students and goes to your house to teach. His training was in classical music, and he knows very well that it takes time and effort to get there, he is patient and encouraging, our kids NEVER felt pressured by him and still learned how to play in an exponential way. Thanks to Jim, they like to play for themselves AND in front of other people, which is one of Jim's important goals. Jim is now a renowned jazz piano player and cofounder of a band (Tre Mojo's) and we are always invited in his gigs when they take play in the bay area. Our son is learning jazz with him, it has been impressive to watch and hear, after a year he does know the jazz harmonies and can do impros. Every spring, Jim organizes a very nice recital where all his students come and perform various types of music (from Beethoven, Chopin, to the Beatles, to jazz impro. from beginner to professional level). Jim basically taught our children to play music with no stress, no competition, and still at a high level. Besides, Jim is highly professional, has NEVER been late, and always does what he says and -we believe- says what he thinks. There has never been a bump in our relationship. We would highly recommend him as a piano teacher.

My philosophy of teaching piano and music is an integrated, individualistic approach. My responsibility as a teacher is to tap into the enthusiasm of the student - what excites them and captivates them about music and nurture that curiosity. While covering the spectrum of theory, technique, and depth of
sounds - it is also important to keep it fresh with innovative approaches to learning different concepts and I achieve this using many different ways honed over the years. What I also aim to teach is effective and efficient practicing - and teach the tools that the student needs to continue evolving as a musician.

Last year my son expressed a strong desire to join his school's orchestra as a violinist that sparked our search for a violin teacher for him. We are so glad to have found Honor. She is a talented musician, and is engaging and patient when teaching my son. For a violin newbie, my wife and I were really happy to see my son setting a big challenge for himself and wanted to support his musical endeavor. For the past 9 months, he has steadily getting better with his violin playing techniques. As with any instruments, practice is key to getting better. Honor left my son clear instructions on what he needed to practice between lessons and let us know of her lesson plans. Now it's a pleasure to listen to him practice; no more cringing like in the early days. :) We are confident he has a very good chance of joining his school's orchestra in the coming year.

Honor is always punctual to the lessons. When there was any unexpected delay, she always texted us and kept us informed. She has been really accommodating to my son's school and after-school schedules. We highly recommend Honor to any parents seeking music lessons for their sons/daughters.

Honor is awesome. Out of the blue, my 8 year old son asked for violin lessons. I have never been very musical so I wasn't sure where to start. I looked at a few programs in my area but it nothing seemed like the right fit for us. I wanted someone who could nurture my son's new found love of the violin but not overwhelm him. I was getting a bit discouraged when I found Honor's profile on TakeLessons; she was the exact person I was looking for. In fact, I signed myself up for lessons too - you are never to old to learn something new. Our lessons have been great. My son is so much more comfortable having them at home. They are fun and challenging. My son is so excited I never have to remind him to practice - we love practicing together. We look forward to seeing Honor every week.

My 8 year old daughter asked us for violin lessons over a year ago. I found a teacher at a local music school who was lovely but whose personality didn't mesh well with my daughter's. After poking around online to find another teacher, I came across TakeLessons and Honor. I cannot be more thrilled to have her as my daughter's teacher. She is calm, patient, professional, and kind to all of us (including our dogs!). My daughter has blossomed under her teaching style, and discovered new types of music and ways of using musical instruments. Honor doesn't just teach notes and strings and songs, but imparts her love of music and musicality to her students. It's been a fantastic transformation in our daughter. I am so grateful that I found Honor when I did and was able to continue encouraging our daughter's love of the violin.

One of the things I really appreciate about Honor is how communicative she is, and how willing she is to answer questions. She's very clear with her families about her schedule, while providing as much flexibility as she can to ensure everyone's needs are addressed.

Honor is fabulous! Our younger daughter is anxiously awaiting her chance to be old enough to also get her lessons with Honor, and I will happily sign her up when the times comes.
