The piano is often referred to as the instrument every musician should start off learning. The way it is laid out makes it very easy to see how music works and fits together. In lessons, we'll be sure to cover all the basics of technique, rhythm, harmony and melody and even theory to ensure a solid foundation to build upon. I tend to teach these concepts through the use of various etude/method books as well as listening exercises to ensure a well rounded approach to learning in order to become a more well rounded musician.

About Bill

Bill is multi-instrumentalist, jazz musician, composer, arranger and educator. He developed a strong connection to music early in life through some family tradition, encouraging parents and many inspiring and influential teachers. He has gone on to perform alongside a number of noteworthy artists a

Enjoyment and engagement precede technical study— always!

Why are you drawn to this instrument, piece of music, or performance situation? We will study all of the things you’d expect: scales, exercises, études, and repertoire. But I like to think I add more value than the notes on the page. And learning to play an instrument is all about reflecting your joy of playing it to the world! Precision is necessary but first is passion. This is why we always begin with enjoyment and engagement.

I consider the whole person I am teaching. I like to approach playing any musical instrument with the whole mind and body. You’ll learn how to most naturally hold and play your instrument with as much ease as if you were simply walking down the street. Only with ease can we play these instruments for life!

About Amy

Without any musical training at age five my gut told me that I had the innate ability to understand music & that I would make music for the rest of my life. This thought has become my truth. It is this truth that drives me to inspire & teach others in cultivating their own musical truth. Some wa

"Thomas was very professional in his approach to teaching. His workplace was very clean and neat. This made us feel very comfortable and welcome. He is a personal teacher. Before any teaching took place he wanted to know my child's likes and dislikes when it came to music. This meant a lot to me. It showed me that he was interested in my son's development as a musician. It told me a lot about his character. He is not just teaching but it is interested in his students. He challenged my child while allowing him to express himself while learning and playing. When he taught he came down to his level and was very patient. This was a very positive experience for us. My son is very excited and we are looking forward to future classes. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a drum instructor."

Plannig to learn to play the piano was an intimidating feeling. From the begining Javier eased my anxiety. He is very flexible and adjust the lessons to my perofrmance. When I do well we speed on. If I struggle he slows down.

I am so glad I started and that he is my instructor. the experience is encouraging and will probably be the cause for me to continue on for awhile."

"I found Mark through TakeLessons a little over a year ago when my dad and I were looking to start learning guitar. I could not have been more pleased with how accommodating Mark was with our schedules and different skill levels. Whether its reviewing what we learned the week prior or taking on something new we are being challenged every lesson. My dad and I have come a long way since we started last year and Mark is to thank for our success. I highly recommend Mark if you are just starting out or have a few years under your belt. He is crazy knowledgeable!"

"I never thought I would confidently understand music theory, even after years of practice, self-teaching, college electives, etc... I just never felt like I "got" it. Brad changed all that. Studying music theory with Brad's guidance and encouragement, I quickly began to feel as though I could "speak" music fluently.

Brad is a phenomenal teacher, and can adapt to almost any situation. If I wasn't understanding something, he never got frustrated, he would find a way to explain it differently until something finally stuck. That's very important I think. I've had too many teachers give up and say, "If you don't get this, you never will." Brad doesn't think like that. To him, "just not getting it" isn't an option. If you want to learn something, he'll find a way to teach it to you."

"Serena was FANTASTIC. I did a week of hour-long singing lessons with her to learn a very difficult song to sing in front of a crowd. Before the lessons, I had no singing experience (and practically sounded like I was tone deaf -- every time I tried karaoke, the sound booth would turn my microphone down so everyone didn't leave the bar). After 5 lessons with Serena, my singing was miraculously not only tolerable, but actually impressed everyone who heard it. Serena also gave me the confidence to get through the song without panicking from nervousness. I highly recommend her."

Chris is taking that knowledge and putting together a lesson approach that will teach me how to play the ukulele well, and help me to achieve my goals. I look forward to many more productive lessons with Chris as I sense he is a great teacher."

How to Transition from Classical Pianist to Jazz Pianist

Piano music doesn't have to be all classical, all the time! Here's what you need to know about getting started with jazz piano chord progressions, courtesy of St. Augustine, FL teacher Heather L...   Thelonius Monk, Herbie Hancock, and Duke Ellington are just a few of the great jazz piano players. What beautiful and fascinating sounds fill our ears when their names come to mind! The seemingly illusive progressions and spontaneous elements, like syncopation and improvisation, sound vi …
