About Crystal

Crystal brings a lifetime’s experience of professional musicianship to each of her lessons. Born into a family of musicians, she sang her first solo at age 2. She also benefits her students with an extraordinarily diverse musical background, having worked as a vocalist in gospel, country, musical theater, jazz, classical, rock, pop and soul styles. Her performing career has taken her from L.A. church meetings to London’s Houses of Parliament.

Crystal hails originally from Los Angeles, CA - where her musical parents gave her a head start by including her in the family business the moment she was able to contribute. She went on to study classical voice, piano and music theory at The Boston Conservatory of Music. After concluding her studies in London, she returned home and began working regularly as a theater performer, appearing in twen

ty world premiers and re-imagined classics. Most notably she played the lead role of Keely Smith in the big band jazz musical “Louis and Keely: Live At The Sahara” during its eight-month run at Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse. She also formed her own rock band, The Honeysuckle Jones Revival, with whom she performed her own songs all over Los Angeles. And she began working as a studio session vocalist, providing demo vocals for other songwriters, as well as arranging and performing back-up vocals for original artists, including Laura Roppe (currently in the Top Ten on Billboard’s Uncharted list of emerging artists.) Crystal played the lead role of Brooke in the new operatic rock musical “The Burning Opera LA” during its Los Angeles run in 2011 as well as providing ensemble vocals and playing piano and bass. She also performs holiday tunes from the Golden Age of American songwriting with musical quartet The Sleigh Belles.

Crystal believes that music is serious business but that it should be fun. She encourages her students to play music they love, as well as expanding their musical knowledge. She is a firm believer in basics first and emphasizes theory and technique as the tools to support creativity and provide freedom, power and control. She believes effort beats talent every time and the student who practices consistently will see results, whatever their level of ability. Most of all, she believes we were all born to make music.

Love how she teaches the mechanics of learning to sing properly such as breathing correctly and posture right from the start for a beginner. Fantastic instructor!

Amazing singng instructor

Crystal has increased my daughter’s self-esteem and expressiveness through song. My daughter is now writing her own poetry and song lyrics, as well as being able to combat her once shyness quality. She loves to perform in front of others now and has a confidence level that amazes me, especially now that she is going into those “teen” years. I think a lot of thanks needs to go to Crystal, for assisting my daughter in reaching her current creative level!

Great piano instructor

Crystal is an amazing piano instructor. She is patient, understanding and dedicated. My daughter has learned so much from her. My daughter’s love for music has increased immensely since learning how to play the piano. This would never have been able to be accomplished without Crystal’s professional and caring teaching style.

About George

Hi, my name is George. I am available to teach electric or acoustic guitar and bass either at my place or yours.

I have played both electric and acoustic guitar for 18+ now and attended Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA where I played with many talented individuals and learned from some of the best teachers.

Along the way I kept my bass guitar on my side and became proficient in the instrument as well.

I love playing several styles and my favorites are classic rock, hard rock, and blues.

I have taught guitar before but I found my knack for teaching by instructing Brazilian jiu-jitsu, another one of my hobbies.

I would love to teach guitar again not just because of the new knowledge I’ve attained but I just like it and learned I know how to be in tune with what a student needs at the moment.

performed selections by Duparc, Schubert, Mozart, and Lehár. In July 2017, she made her role debut as Donna Anna in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Centre for Opera Studies in Italy. During the 2015/16 season, Ms. Balter returned to the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival as Marcellina in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, where she also covered Countess Almaviva under the baton of Maestro James Richman. In addition, she appeared as La Chatte/L’Écureuil in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les Sortilèges. Previously, Ms. Balter joined the roster of Russian Opera Workshop, where she covered Zemfira in Rachmaninoff’s Aleko and the title role in an abridged version of Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet. Balter began the 2016 season as a guest artist in From Heidelberg to Hanover, where she performed Strauss’ Four Last Songs in addition to selections from Lohengrin, Der Freischütz, and Tannhäuser with Lyric Opera Baltimore Artistic Director, James Harp. Highlights of the 2014/15 season included Second Lady in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte with the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, Alice (cover) in Verdi’s Falstaff with Harrower Opera Workshop, and An Evening of Opera & Song with the McDonogh Guest Artist Series.

Jamie Balter maintains a private voice studio in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, previously having studios in Springfield, Illinois and Miami and Tallahassee, Florida. She has previously served as the head of the voice program at The Music Factory in Springfield, Illinois and served on the faculty at The Stubbs' Music Center in Tallahassee, Florida.  This fall, Ms. Balter will be teaching a masterclass as part of a series at McDonogh School in Owings Mills, Maryland titled An Artist Works: Tools of the Trade where she will discuss vocal technique, the key elements to having a successful audition, and how to make a website and a résumé.

Teaching Philosophy:
Singing is a process and a journey and every singer’s journey is different.  My goal as a vocal pedagogue is to create a positive environment in my studio where my students can reach all of the goals that they set out to achieve.  In addition, it is important for my students to feel a warm, welcoming atmosphere, where they can make mistakes, take big risks, and ask questions.  The art of singing is a whole-body experience and it is essential for students to train and practice like an athlete would train for an Olympic event.  I encourage my students to do some sort of physical activity that has an emphasis on the abdominal muscles (i.e. yoga, pilates, tai chi, weight routine), so that they feel what it is like to use the whole body as well as strengthen their core muscles, which directly relates to “appoggio” or breath support.  I teach my students to use their entire body when they sing.  I believe that students should practice with physicality gestures, so they can get connected to their whole body and feel a strong gravitational center.  As a vocal pedagogue, I foster a healthy vocal technique and I believe that it is necessary for students to understand how the muscles work for inhalation and exhalation.  In addition, I believe that it is important for students to have kinesthetic awareness of the process of singing.  After a student has mastered the basic understanding of alignment, the body, and breathing, I then focus on phonation and having a clean onset after the inhalation.  Singing is all muscle coordination, so careful practice and patience is needed.  The process cannot be rushed.  Students in my studio have a solid foundation, which can be applied to any style of music that they wish to sing.  Every student has different needs and it is crucial to cater each lesson to the particular student.

Jamie's approachable and friendly personality is reflected in her teaching style - she is not afraid to have you try various unconventional techniques that turn out to be super effective and fun! In the year I've been taking lessons with her, my breath support, technique, and vocal range have all improved significantly - so much so that a high note that I found strenuous a year ago is now almost within my comfort range! She is very receptive to different styles of music, and her suggestions are always challenging, fun, and geared towards developing your voice.

Jamie is a fantastic voice teacher. She is extremely patient and encouraging with me as a beginner. I started with hardly any experience at all, and my singing has already improved significantly after only 8 weeks of lessons. She helped me with song choice and voice repertoire, but is also open to my suggestions. I can highly recommend her for anyone who has been thinking about voice lessons, but has not had the courage to start, even at an older age. Just give it a try!

About Diane

You will never regret having voice lessons with a true professional. I've performed and taught across the US, Europe, and Australia. As a singer/stage director I've produced over fifty cabaret shows, musicals and operas. As a recording artist, I've released the CDs: "Music in Flight," endorsed by Doctors Without Borders and "Rosas de Pulpa," a digital album of Argentine music, which was recently nominated Classical Album of the Year by "Just Plain Folks." With years of university and community teaching experience, I am a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing, a vetting organization for teachers, which provides competition platforms for young singers. I have been awarded grants by the Alabama Council for the Arts and the Lowder Foundation. Though still an active performer in jazz and other genres, I love teaching and am c

ommitted to offering my students what music can do for our world. I am Diane M. and a Google search of my name will connect you to tracks, videos and much more history about my varied and wonderful life in the Arts! NOTE: There are performance opportunities available through study in my private studio. Ask me about them!

It is a pleasure to provide a recommendation for Diane McNaron and her studio. My daughter has been taking private lessons for more than three years and we have been exceptionally pleased with the results. Ms. McNaron’s extensive background and experience in a wide variety of musical genres allows her to customize lessons around the student’s vocal strengths and interests rather than force a cookie cutter approach. Ms. McNaron has nurtured her talent in a positive, professional manner and I highly recommend her for those looking to improve, learn, or simply polish their current vocal skill set. You will not be disappointed.

About Davin

Hi there

My name is Davin Devine (yes that’s my actual name 😜) and I’m 28 years old. I was born and raised in Birmingham, AL, and in that time I’ve always participated in music in some form or fashion. When I was about 8 years old, I took up banjo lessons and started learning about reading music. When I was in middle school I was in the school band and played saxophone and that’s where I really started enjoying reading and playing music. On my own during the same time, I took up playing the guitar and taught myself how to read tablature. All through high school I continued in the school band and at the same time formed my own and participated in others local rock bands. We played shows around alabaster and Hoover. After I graduated from high school I moved to Nashville and busked for money while playing with other groups at open mic ni

ghts and even making a few recordings with them. I traveled to Texas and played in another group that traveled around Texas playing covers and got a few of my first big gigs. Faced with finance troubles, I moved back to my hometown and decided to pursue my passion part time as a teacher in which time I have continued my studies into the practical knowledge of music theory.

"Matt is AWESOME. He has been a great musical role model for me since day one. The knowledge that Matt has passed down to me has completely reallocated m
y purpose as a musician and challenged me to question my role as a drummer in an ensemble situation. What insight! I have absolutely no doubt that I will be prepared to confidently attend college university music ensembles in the next couple of months, because of Matt's mentorship and how it has inspired me (and of course, taught me how) to achieve my best. Matt has exposed me to styles of music I didn't even know existed. His talent is beyond the capacity of any other teacher I've had, and my family and I respect him very much. Very personable, easy-going, and intelligent. Thank you Matt, for everything. :)"

"Finally found a real musical-performance teacher for my daughter!

After spending four years trying different music teachers who had more interest in thei
r own style of singing, finding Marie-France is is a gift. Marie-France is an amazing teacher. She connects with my daughter and is truly interested in teaching to her strengths. My daughter had an instant connection with her.
As a mother and an elementary school teacher, I knew she understood my child immediately. Marie-France is a holistic teacher who is willing to change styles without hesitation to find what works best for my daughter.
Coming from a performing and creative arts family, I love that Marie-France's show business background and her no-nonsense teaching style, is just what we needed in a teacher.
More importantly, my daughter listens to her advice and her singing has improved immeasurably. The trip is a bit of a distance for us, but totally worth every mile."

asses were not easy: my hands could not find any key, the notes seemed all sound at the wrong moment! But with her patience, her good humor, her experience in teaching adults...It all fell into place after just a few sessions.
She is professional, serious, demanding but flexible, respectful of the busy life of the student.
I would definitively recommend her if you are looking into learning or improving you piano skills."
