Juliet J.

Saint Louis, MO

About Juliet

I have been a teacher in private practice for 20 years. I have a wide range of experience with singers of all styles and age groups with a variety of goals and skills. I sang with a professional jazz octet for a number of years while maintaining my practice, have taught various master classes, musically directed various musicals, have sung background vocals and played piano on various recordings. I studied vocal and piano performance at Murray State University and studied privately through my adult singing and teaching career.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a big believer of direct appl
ication of core technique to repertoire/style. Generally, lessons are fun, comfortable and laughter is encouraged. I like singers to be working on a wide variety of music from the beginning. It's a great way to understand and explore your voice and how great technique is fundamental to successful development. I find this approach beneficial if you're a beginning student or if you sing professionally. Not to mention, singing songs is fun!!!! I encourage all students to give input on repertoire. Songs are chosen with goals in mind, including working specific parts of the range, preparing for an audition or performance, stamina, strength, and overall vocal development. In 3-6 months you will have a very good understanding of how your voice works and how to apply good technique to a variety of styles of music. My goals for piano students of all ages include a broad understanding of music theory and the ability to sit down and play music! I believe good sight reading skills are paramount for piano enjoyment and functional playing skills. We will sight read at each lesson.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Studio with piano, mic, recoding equipment, and seating for parents.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have a full size keyboard for travel.

*** Specialties ***
*Teachers classified as a Student Favorite have taught a minimum of 25
lessons and have received the highest feedback rating from students.I'm comfortable with all styles of singing and have coached extensively in most styles, from classical to hip hop to rock. I work with singers with various goals. Some are professional singers, some study for a future career, and some study for personal enrichment. I am very good at teaching solid healthy technique/voice use, with direct application to repertoire, maintaining the singer's authenticity, style, and vocal health.

Angela H.

Hazelwood, MO

About Angela

Hi! My name is Angela, and I teach private piano, voice, and theory lessons. I love teaching, and have taught many ages (3 to 93) and ability levels (novice to advanced). I am a dependable, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic teacher. I offer lessons for 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly sessions in my home studio. I do not offer bi-weekly lessons or lessons in the student's home.

My home is a split-level, with my private living area above and my music studio below. There is a waiting area just outside the music studio, as well as a half-bath specifically designated for students and parents. The stud
io itself contains a piano and organ, my personal music library, and additional seating for parents. There is a full-length mirror for vocal students to watch their performance skills grow, and a gumball machine for when younger students have an exceptionally good lesson.

Making music is a skill which can bring lifelong joy to the musician as well as everyone around them. While I can easily ensure that my students enjoy music-making while they are taking lessons, my ultimate goal is that students continue to want to make music throughout their entire life, even after they stop taking lessons. I firmly believe that my job as a teacher is to train my students to be independent and self-sufficient musicians. Many teachers teach by rote, playing a passage to a student and then having the student play it back. Though this method is helpful in some situations, students who are taught in this manner often find that they are only able to play the songs taught to them in lessons, and that to learn a new song they must have a teacher by their side showing them how the song goes. In my lessons, however, students are taught to learn their own music through sight-reading, ear-training, music theory, and listening to and critiquing their own playing. Over time, this allows the student more and more freedom to make music without a teacher.

Jessie Y.

Saint Louis, MO

About Jessie

I hold a Masters of Music in Violin Pedagogy from Boise State University. I have been playing the violin for eighteen years. I have performed in a variety of ensembles from 180-person full orchestra and chorus in Eisenstadt, Austria, to a string quartet in a Beatles tribute band. I have been teaching private lessons for about eight years, mostly to beginning and intermediate level students.

*** Lesson Details ***
I teach primarily from the Suzuki violin method with some additional resources to create a well-rounded knowledge of the violin. In addition to learning to play certain pieces o
n the violin students will develop various basic music skills and techniques, such as a theory and history of music. The main goal of my teaching, however, is to instill a love of music and the arts in each and every student I teach.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My home studio is equipped with a piano, music stand, music theory and ear training games, as well as a vast library of method books and supplemental materials.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide lesson plans and some technology. I expect students to have their own instruments and cleaning materials, as well as the appropriate music. Occasionally we will need access to a piano. If there is no piano at the student's home we will need to meet at a location to practice with one.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in the Suzuki violin method.

Very patient and professional

Jessie is very patient, professional, flexible. I'm a college student and busy with school work, but I still learned a lot from her, not only in violin skills, but also music theory and so on. She also teaches me how to practice instead of just showing me the pieces.

Gives you confidence in your own abilities

Jessie taught my daughter from June 2011-Dec 2012. She has been an excellent teacher for my 4 year old. It is really a challenge to keep kids focused at this age and Jessie was always up for the challenge. She simplified things down to really basic tasks that the kids can do and more importantly enjoy the learning experience.

During the period our little girl developed the confidence to play in front of a large audience. She could compose her own variations and play it with authority.

Jessie was always on time and professional with her approach. She always brought prints for parents to follow through on the lessons. It made practices at home really simple for us. We could see progress in our daughter's abilities every week.

We felt sorry that we could not continue on with her because of us relocating to a different city and her move as well. I would greatly recommend her for your violin lessons.

Richard D.

Saint Louis, MO

About Richard

Music is my life. Since the age of 16, I have studied the guitar extensively. During my high-school years I was involved in band, marching band, choir, and independent music theory. I started my first band when I was 19 in the U.S. Army, and my life has never been the same since. I played music professionally in local bands while attending UMSL and have been teaching guitar and musical performance to many students privately for the last 7 years while developing and exploring my own musical goals. Recently I have written, produced, and performed on 5 original music albums, toured from St L
ouis to Texas and Colorado, and have learned many things about humanity and our culture's relationship to music. Those who share a passion for music form an extraordinary community. Come take the first step toward your potential...

*** Lesson Details ***
My students can expect professional, expert advise from a working performance artist. One of my main philosophies is a focus on fun. If music is fun, then students will practice more - which leads to accelerating returns. My students can expect lessons tailored to their specific goals. First I will discuss with the student musical influences and genre preferences, then I will assess the student's current abilities and we will begin designing a weekly regimen of practice and study. As a product of the Internet generation, I recommend using all the tools available to my students including the Internet to further their goals. My students will also learn to perform with other musicians, so we will typically have a segment of each lesson dedicated to jam time. Whether my students aspire to be professional performance artists, impress their love interests, or just rock out in their bedrooms, I work with my students so that they can do exactly that.

*** Studio Equipment ***
one bedroom apt...hardwood floor...central room for studio...music stands, room parents to sit, chairs...

*** Travel Equipment ***
I bring a music stand, an acoustic guitar, my handout literature, and any other equipment (mic, stand, vocal amp, electric guitar, guitar amp) based on what my students want to learn. I expect my students to own whatever instruments they want to learn.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching acoustic and electric guitar and stage performance. I teach using handouts that I customize for students and have lessons made up around different concepts such as - learning to identify what key a song is in - how to use 3 chord combinations - learning scales and when to use them - these type of things. I usually teach based on how I learned, which includes - using the Internet to learn songs - how to figure out how a particular song is played - getting into good practice habits - etc. My genres of specialty are Blues, Rock/Classic Rock/Southern Rock, and Acoustic Singer/Songwriter. What I like to do is ask a student what kind of music or songs they would like to learn, then build them up to the level they need to be to play those songs or that style of interest.

Perfect fit for my daughter

My 17 year old daughter recently began taking lessons with Richard D., and we couldn't be happier. He is patient and encouraging, and he makes learning fun. She really appreciates the fact that he encourages her to work on music that she likes rather than telling her what songs to learn. He obviously knows his instrument, and clearly enjoys passing on his knowledge. A+ for this teacher!
