I have been lucky enough to have been trained by some of the world's most renowned flute performers and teachers, and love to pass on their and my own knowledge to new generations of flute players. About Hallie
Hello there! Do you or your loved ones have an interest in music? So do I! That is why I am here to teach and share my own passion for music. I love working with children and have two boys of my own. I love teaching music and instil passion for learning into every one of my students.

Having grown up in a musical family with my mother a professional violinist, I have been exposed to the joys of music since childhood. I learned how to play Suzuki piano at the age of three, and later percussion and string instruments from when I was six years old. In high school I joined the band playing flute. I loved playing flute and piccolo so much that I decided to take this as my career and went to Interlochen Arts Academy where I excelled in my performance. I later went to Prague Conservatory and Czech Budweiss Conservatory and played with the
Prague Film Orchestra. Even more recently I have been a teacher for the Flutes and Strings classes at Unison World School in Dehradun, India.

I have enjoyed having a very successful studio here in Tampa, and hope to enrich your life with music soon!

*** Lesson Details ***
My approach to teaching varies with the age level of each student. With younger students, imitation is often one of the best methods of learning and I prefer the Suzuki method for students up to age 8, especially with strings. For older children and adults, learning music notation and basic music theory for a full understanding of musical language are more important to get them to the level where they can learn any music that they want to play for fun. For students who wish to excel in their school band, a more practical approach with technique specific warm-ups and exercises seems to be the best in general.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room which includes music stands, sheet music, whiteboard, video recording equipment and microphone, and seating for parents/students. No pets. Parking in driveway. Siblings are welcome.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide metronome, and tools for minor instrument repair. Students should provide their own music stands and sheet music.

Dr. Carl S. maintains an online and in-person music studio through TakeLessons, where he teaches several instruments privately and in group settings including saxophone, guitar, oboe, music theory, flute, clarinet, and piano. Carl teaches Saxophone and Jazz Studies at the University of Tulsa as an adjunct faculty member. During Spring 2019, Carl is teaching Music Theory and Saxophone at Oklahoma State University.

Carl taught at Oklahoma State University as a Lecturer of Saxophone and Music Theory during Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert's sabbatical in Fall 2017. His duties included graduate saxophone lessons, graduate music theory review, graduate saxophone pedagogy, and saxophone studio class.

Prior to working at OSU, Carl was Instructor of Jazz and Saxophone at South Dakota State University from 2014-2017. His responsibilities included direct

Carl completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at the University of Kansas in 2014, and his Master of Music Pedagogy and Performance from Oklahoma State University in 2011. He graduated from Harrah High School in 2002, earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in 2008, and was a 5th-12th grade Head Band Director at Fairview Public schools. He is currently a member of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Jazz Education Network, Music Teachers National Association, National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, and an Honorary Member of Tau Beta Sigma. He has held previous memberships with Kappa Kappa Psi, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Kappa Delta Pi, and the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association.

While at KU, Carl was also a graduate teaching assistant for the saxophone studio and jazz studies program. His responsibilities included Assistant Director of the KU Jazz Festival, directing Jazz Ensembles II-III, directing Jazz Combo III-VI, directing Saxophone Quartets II-III, teaching private saxophone lessons, assisting in saxophone studio class, and teaching the music education woodwind methods course. His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen, Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr., Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

Carl's primary saxophone instructors have been Vince Gnojek, Dr. Jeffrey Loeffert, Dr. Ann Bradfield, Dr. Keith Talley, and William Rodney Hull. He has had additional instruction in lessons and masterclasses from Gary Foster, Dr. Joseph Murphy, Dr. Michael Cox, Bob Sheppard, Johnny Salinas, Dr. Kimberly Goddard Loeffert, Dr. Geoffrey Deibel, Dr. Jonathan Nichol, Dr. Griffin Campbell, Dr. James Laughlin, and Dr. David Dees. Carl's jazz directors have included Dan Gailey, Bob McCurdy, Dr. Jonathan Martin, Dr. Keith Talley, and Dr. Terry Segress.

Carl enjoys recording several instruments in his home studio and composing new music. His compositions that have been performed include his big band arrangement of Cat Battles by Joshua Redman, September in the Refrain (alto saxophone and electronics), Funk-o-matic (jazz combo), Smooth (jazz combo), and The Deadline Arrives at Dawn (alto saxophone and electronics). As an advocate of new music involving the saxophone, he has participated in a commissioning consortium for Alone Together by composer David MacDonald through Kick Starter. In 2013, Carl performed the premier of Cuento #3 by Nelson Ramirez Diaz. During summer of 2014, he recorded selections from Dr. John Walker's "The Alto Saxophone in the Attic," published by Carl Fischer. At the 10th Annual SDSU/Brookings Optimist Jazz Festival in 2015, Carl directed SDSU Jazz Ensemble I's premier of Dog, Tired by David von Kampen.

Carl is a Conn-Selmer Endorsing Artist. He hosted the North American Saxophone Alliance Region 3 (ND, SD, NE, MN, IA) Conference at South Dakota State University on March 17-18, 2017. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, Carl performed Dreams in the Dusk by David Biedenbender with South Dakota State University's Wind Symphony, directed by Dr. Jacob Wallace. On Monday, February 6, 2017, Carl performed the premiere of Lhotse for alto saxophone and percussion by Steve Danyew with Dr. Aaron Ragsdale. In April 2017, Carl performed solo tenor saxophone and orchestral clarinet in Ethan Bortnick's national PBS Special called "Generations of Music," which featured special guest, Peter Yarrow, from Peter, Paul and Mary.

gside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun. Music lessons include:

1. Building a really strong foundation so it's easy to interpret or understand any part, and to play it with the right amount of practice.

2. Learning to sight-read music, so you can play it well as soon as possible.

3. Learning how to improvise (make-up) music, learn music by ear, and to understand and create chords, which lets you play music in different ways.

4. Play different styles from classical to jazz to popular music.

5. Learning how to practice efficiently so you can learn music as fast as possible.

6. Composing our own original music.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Learning an instrument is one of those few skills that will genuinely last you your whole life. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it.

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Flutist Sarah Shin is a vibrant performer, educator, and collaborator. She has performed in Symphony Hall in Boston, Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York City, John F. Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., Gewandhaus Theatre in Leipzig Germany, and in concert venues throughout Seoul, South Korea. She recently received her Doctor of Musical Arts at Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts under the tutelage of Bart Feller.

Sarah has performed in festivals in France, Brazil, Mexico, and nation-wide within the United States. She has participated music festivals such as Round Top Festival Institute (TX), Brevard Music Center (NC), Colorado College Music Festival (CO), and Opera in the Ozarks (AR) as principal flute.

As an educator, Sarah gives private flute lessons and masterclasses to students of all levels currently
residing in the Greater New York City Area. She has taught masterclasses and workshops in Washington, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Iowa, Utah, and New Jersey. She is currently on faculty at the Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts Extension Division as flute instructor and chamber music coach. During the 2016-2017 school year, she was on the Flute Faculty at the Center for Musical Excellence in New Vernon, NJ. She also served as the Director of Admissions.

Along with a substantial teaching and performing schedule, Sarah is an active chamber musician. She is a founding member of the Emissary Quartet, founded in 2009. In November 2016, the Emissary Quartet premiered a work by Annika Socolofsky, which was made possible by a grant from the Fromm Music Foundation. Emissary Quartet was quarterfinalists in the 2016 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition, and was the only flute quartet to have competed within the last seven years. They also performed at the National Flute Association's 44th Convention in San Diego, California. The Emissary Quartet won multiple grants from the Friends of Flutes Foundation, Inc. and from NewMusic USA.

Sarah received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Flute Performance from Carnegie Mellon University School of Music, and her Masters in Flute Performance from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, as a Barbara and David Jacobs Scholar. Her primary instructors include Jeanne Baxtresser, Bart Feller, Thomas Robertello, and Judy Grant.

I'm an adult who played piano years ago and always wanted to play the flute but I was frustrated, squeaky, out of breath, and out of tune. With a few weeks of lessons I'm further along than I was trying to teach myself over years.

My name is Azeem and I am very passionate about music, specifically flute. Flute performance was a surprise in my life that I discovered in high school. It moved me to a point where I knew it was what I wanted to pursue after listening to an orchestra’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony. Though any discipline within music takes great patience, discipline, and perseverance, that freedom and expression that you receive while performing make it well worth it. The classical technique on the flute can provide a great foundation to learning all styles of music on the instrument, from classical, jazz, hip-hop and even folk. Along side classical flute performance, I have learned to also beatbox on the flute and produce/compose my own music as well. I believe learning multiple styles of music in the long term is extremely beneficial to becoming a well rounded musician. It also improves musicality and develops your own unique style on the instrument.

Azeem the Flutist: I am a Master's student in Flute Performance at the University of Northern Iowa. I have been playing the flute for 13 years and teaching for 7. My main style is classical, and due to the technical training I have had since I was very young, it has been very easy for me to learn and master other styles such as Folk, Jazz, Blues, Beatbox, Hip-Hop, and other styles of flute. I have a passion for performing and have played hundreds of solo and ensemble concerts. As a classical performer, I was the Grand Prize Winner of Santa Barbara Performing Arts Scholarship Competition in 2013 and won 3rd prize at the University of Northern Iowa Concerto Competition in 2016. I have played concerts all over the United States as well as in United Kingdom and Italy. As a performer of other styles I h
ave played in a couple bands (“Dannsair" Irish Folk Band and “Azeem X Underbelly”) and supported these acts on tours.

Azeem is an exceptional teacher. He watches as I play and makes suggestions and corrections that really help me to reach the goal that I desire. He is sharp about understanding what he sees and hears. I like the fact that he also demonstrates the proper technique to be used in my personal practice time. And everything is done with patience... but also with great expectation. It is easy to have the lessons with Azeem because he is very encouraging, and expert in what he does!

It was fun time learning music, especially the flute. I wasn't familiar with the music at all like I was an illiterate in music. With the lessons that we will have together, we will begin with long tones to warm up the lungs and open up the throat. This warm up is vital to creating and maintaining a good tone through the duration of the lesson.
Next there will be an exercise to practice technique using a combination of scales and arpeggios.
From this point, you will be ready to present the pieces you have been working on and together we will help you improve through a variety of practice techniques. We will also discuss your goals as a musician and make the necessary plans to make those goals happen.

I have been playing the flute since I was about the age of nine and I just recently graduated with a Bachelors of Arts in Music (I loved every minute of it). Music is a huge part of my life and I love sharing that with others. Helping and seeing others discover and develop their talents and find joy in music is something I love.

I come from a musical family and have been singing and playing the piano since before I can remember. Flute (and piccolo) lessons began for me in the 7th grade and I participated in both concert and marching bands from there though college. Now I take regular opportunities to play with various groups of all sizes.

I have taught music (theory, flute, piano and vocal) to students of varying ages and backgrounds both individually and in groups. Working as the woodwind and marching assistant at my alma mater was a thrill and I enjoied seeing and helping students push themselves and reap the rewards of both talent and recognition for their efforts and accomplishments.


While participating in the Prince William Community Band, I had the opportunity to learn to play some percussion instruments and played in that section for a couple years. I have been a music director for several years and enjoy arranging music. It is never to late to start learning if you have the desire and persistence.

For two people who have never learned anything about the flute, my child and myself feel comfortable and confident in practicing what we’ve learned! About Andrew
I have been an active professional musician in the Utah Valley for the past 4 years. I came to Utah from Portland, Oregon in 2011 to study at Brigham Young University under Ray Smith, where I earned a BM in Saxophone Performance in 2018. While there, I performed as a member of the BYU Synthesis Big Band as a performer and featured soloist, sharing the stage with the likes of Gladys Knight, Peter Hollens, Konrad Herwig, Ed Calle, Corey Christianson and others. In 2016 I went with Synthesis on a tour of Eastern Europe, where the band and I performed at the Salkrastu Jazz Festival. I can be heard as a featured soloist on the tracks “Laura” and “Downtime” from the BYU Synthesis Album “Downtime” (2018). On the classical side, I was selected as a finalist three years in a row for the BYU Concerto Competition, played tenor saxophone from 2015 to
2017 in the BYU Wind Symphony, and played principal clarinet in the BYU Symphony orchestra in 2018.

In addition to my performances at BYU, I have performed and collaborated with numerous groups and artists on the Provo and Salt Lake music scenes as both a commercial and studio artist, such as my collaboration with Utah-based vocalist Emily Merrell in her performance at the 2018 Jazz Education Network Conference in Dallas, Texas. I also returned to the northwest in 2015 to take part in the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, where I studied with jazz greats such as Terrell Stafford, Steve Wilson, Bob Mintzer and others.

I am a passionate teacher and am happy to take students of all levels, over Skype or in person.

I have been teaching flute for almost 20 years. I have a doctorate in flute performance and have done training and extensive research in body mapping and efficiency of body use. Flutist John Ross is an accomplished soloist, educator, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. He taught on the faculty of West Virginia State University and currently teaches for the Music for the Sake of Music summer program in Green Bay, WI. He has been principal flute of the Italian-American Opera Festival Orchestra (CA), the Charleston Chamber Orchestra (WV), and has also performed with the Muncie Symphony, Tallahassee Symphony, and the Charleston Light Opera Guild. Dr. Ross has appeared as soloist with the WVSU Wind Ensemble, the Florida State University Symphonic Band, and the orchestra of Music for the Sake of Music. His flute ensemble Silver Lining Flutes toured around Costa Rica in Spring 2017, performing and giving masterclasses as part of the Promising Young Artist of the 21st Century series. His folk trio Cuttin' Bracken
has performed throughout northern Florida, including multiple performances at the Florida Folk Festival in White Springs, Florida. Dr. Ross attended West Virginia University (BM and MM), Ball State University (AD), and Florida State University (DM), studying with Joyce Catalfano, Thomas Godfrey, Francesca Arnone, Mihoko Watanabe, and Eva Amsler.
