I have been performing and teaching lessons as my full time career for over 15 years.

I teach ages 7 through adult, beginners through advanced, and enjoy customizing each student's lessons according to their own goals. I mostly teach and perform classical music, but also incorporate other styles of music into lessons at the student's request.

Lessons often incorporate aspects of mindfulness, meditation, and body awareness practices, and I believe in giving students a strong foundation in ear training, improvisation, and music theory.

About Emily

With over twenty years of flute experience, Emily H. is new to the Portland area. Emily has served as principal flutist of the Union Symphony in Charlotte, NC and flutist with the Alla Prima Flute and Harp Duo and the Quintessence Wind Quintet. I'm an adult who is finally getting around to learning the flute (it's always been on my bucket list). I had my first lesson with Emily yesterday and it was great - exactly what I was looking for. Emily is gracious and encouraging. By the end of the session, we even played a duet! So fun.

Emily has been quite helpful in helping me explore my direction in flute-playing--a good mix of 'working with' and guiding me; quite observant about where I go astray, yet encouraging and ease-making.

Emily is very clear, cheerful, supportive and encouraging! So impressed at how quickly she got me feeling confident. Left my first lesson feeling excited to go forward and clear idea about how to practice. Can't wait for our next lesson!

With four years of teaching experience and a wealth of creative knowledge gained from my time at Oberlin College and Conservatory, my teaching caters to every age and ability. In addition to studying at Oberlin (and now Peabody) I grew up in a very musical household, and have two younger siblings.
I love working with all types of students, whether they’re preparing for college auditions, just beginning the flute, or only looking to play for fun, and I also have experience with students with special needs. Please contact me through this website if you would like lessons, and I will respond within a day!

absolutely wonderful.

She encourages, she finds analogies to explain, she is more patient with me then I am with myself. She also explains the terms, gives tips on how to read the notes. She is able to identify the mistakes and give the right advice on how to improve. Her advice on how to practice made all the difference for me. I started with a giant cookie bite sized embouchure and within a few lessons I have managed to make it smaller thanks to her instructions. There is hope for me afterall.
Looking forward to playing a duet with her without me making a mess. Thank you Amanda!
Mike
Amanda is an outstanding teacher. She inspires and challenges me to play pieces I did not think I could play. She is able to take difficult passages and break them down step my step so I can learn how to play them properly. I am sure I would not be playing as I am now, if it weren’t for Amanda’s skilled teaching. She is also friendly, makes the lessons interesting and fun and is very professional. I have taken lessons both in person and on Skype and she excels in both modes.

"My daughter (who is now in college) was a student of Michelle’s from 4th – 11th grade. Michelle is a talented musician, a wonderful person, and a very effective teacher. My daughter really enjoyed her lessons with Michelle - it was always a bright spot in her busy week. She benefited from Michelle’s guidance outside of lessons also – recitals, entering and placing in solo competitions, and auditioning and playing for the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra. We felt so lucky to have found Michelle – she was an excellent teacher and a wonderful role model - teacher, musician, mother. I recommend her very, very highly."
