About Andrew L.

I grew up in Portland, Oregon, where I played and composed music throughout my formative years. Upon completing high school I moved to Utah to study at Brigham Young University under Dr. Ray Smith, where I earned a BM in Saxophone Performance in 2018. While there, I performed as a member of the BYU Synthesis Big Band as a performer and featured soloist, sharing the stage with the likes of Gladys Knight, Peter Hollens, Konrad Herwig, Ed Calle, Corey Christianson and others. In 2016 I went with Synthesis on a tour of Eastern Europe, where the band and I performed at the Salkrastu Jazz Festival. I can be heard as a featured soloist on the tracks “Laura” and “Downtime” from the BYU Synthesis Album Downtime (2018). On the classical side, I was selected as a finalist three years in a row for the BYU Concerto Competition, played tenor saxophone from 2015 to 2017 in the BYU Wind Symphony, and played principal clarinet in the BYU Symphony orchestra in 2018.

In addition to my performances at BYU, I have performed and collaborated with numerous groups and artists on both the Salt Lake and Dallas-Fortworth music scenes, such as my performances with groups led by Utah-based vocalist Emily Merrell, Salt Lake-based saxophonist David Halliday, and UNT faculty drummer Quincy Davis. I also returned to the northwest in 2015 to take part in the Port Townsend Jazz Festival, where I studied with jazz greats such as Terrell Stafford, Steve Wilson, Bob Mintzer and others.

I am currently pursuing a masters in jazz studies at the University of North Texas, where I am a member of the One O'Clock Lab Band under the direction of Alan Baylock.

I am a passionate teacher and am happy to take students of all levels, online or in person.

I don’t sit in on the lessons, but this is the first lesson my 13 yr old takes initiative to be ready for. No chasing him to be ready. He even voluntarily re joined the band at school. All good signs to me. We had a couple of hiccups and Andrew was very accommodating to assist with rescheduling. BEST thing busy mom doesn’t have to leave home!

Andrew helped me learn how to breathe more efficiently, so the notes sound smooth and not choppy. Good first lesson.

Took online saxophone lessons with Andrew for a few months. It was my very first time ever playing the sax and Andrew was very patient and understanding, teaching me the basics, answering any questions I had, and showing me how to play some songs. It was my first time taking online lessons, and though I wasn't sure how it would work out at first, it went very smoothly and was a lot of fun.

Andrew has been an awesome instructor. I've had two lessons online with him so far (and have many more scheduled). He's patient and able to work around my irregular schedule. He gives me exercises and songs to work on, and I feel like I'm learning something every time I practice. I would highly recommend him - especially as a beginner.

Andrew is patient and kind with my son, but not too soft on him. He is doing very well with my middle schooler. He is teaching him things on a one-on-one level that his band director isnt able to in such a large group setting. Thank you Andrew! I appreciate you pushing him and inspiring him.

Andrew has made taking saxophone lessons so much fun for my son. He is very dedicated to working with students at their level of ability and makes it fun by including their own personal interests. For example he has worked with my son on several Star Wars themes and other songs that got my son interested in playing saxophone in the first place. We highly recommend Andrew. For reference my son is 14 and at a beginner level.

Andrew was recommended to us by the BYU music faculty, when I contacted them to see who might be a good private instructor for my teenage daughter (who has a background in other instruments but wanted to learn more with sax than her band teacher could provide in a classroom setting). Andrew has always been very knowledgeable, extremely personable, and willing to match our needs with his expertise. When we went to a local music store to get some additional accessories, one of his peers assisted us--and he described Andrew as "insanely talented" on the sax. I would fully recommend him!

I recommended Andrew as a teacher for a student that I tutor. She's a slow learner and requires a lot of special attention, but Andrew was a perfect fit! He really takes students where they're at and teaches them the way that is best for them. He's capable of teaching any level of student. He's also passionate about what he does and has a lot to offer as far as knowledge.
