Heidi S. is one of the most popular teachers at TakeLessons and has spent her life studying Classical music and teaching and performing on flute and piano. As a veteran TakeLessons teacher, she has accumulated over 65 student reviews. She loves sharing her vast knowledge of Classical music with others. She believes music is fun, educational, and inspirational, and that it can bring joy and peace to your soul. She focuses her lessons on learning to play classical music with heart. She says, "Playing music gives your heart a voice. Let your heart sing through the music. I think of myself as a professional teacher. Even after 30 years, I still enjoy the excitement and challenge new students bring. I love to inspire and my attitude about music is contagious. My students and their parents say I have unlimited patience. I am very flexible in my teaching style and cater to the needs of my students by writing arrangements of songs they want to play."

I begin by focusing on the basics of the flute, such as knowing the parts of the flute, how to hold the flute with good posture, making that first sound, having the correct embouchure, and some breathing techniques. Then we progress to learning basic note-reading and rhythms, while incorporating several beginner flute fingerings, then moving on to learning simple songs. I typically use the Accent on Achievement series for flute or the Rubank flute series or a combination of the two, depending on the student's ability/level. I may also add other supplemental pieces or materials as needed. If the student plays in band at school, we may also take time to work on music for that as well, giving the student the individual attention that they may miss in a group/classroom setting. Flute lessons are also a great way to keep up with practice when school is out for holiday breaks or summer.
